Dedication The 1959 Patriot staff wishes to dedicate this annual to one of the men who has worked for our school. This man has been in our district for twelve years. He began in 1947 as principal of Cherry Hills School. In 1950 when the Cherry Creek District was forrned he was asked to become the super- intendent of schools. He is one of the people who planned the high school and junior high school. He has also com- pletely reorganized the school district. The staff wishes con- tinued success to Clark D. Stutler. Because we are now lrvmg 1n the space age rocket as one of our maJor defense weapons IS of e xmportance 9 to all of us The papers are f111e th stone t sate bolrcally the fm reparations for a rocket be com pared to the ents of the school year T secuons of thts ear w11l be represented by the tous stages rnvolved rnng our school rocket launchings, high altitud se cone tests, et ce - 1 Sym- y H . . As we carry on with our theme of rockets and rocketry, we find that we must begin with this section on the ad- ministration. Now, our only problem here is correlate the administration with the little creature pictured below. As one can easily see, this creature is standing ready to press the button which will fire the rocket. Because a fine administration is the starting point of our annual and also the starting point of a fine school, the action pictured below is the beginning of our proposed flight. ddmycnf 5170 ILION CQ: 1 S o . l5 e. Fog. 1 - s - 0: ' Princzpal My three years at the Cherry Creek High School have been characterized by the most pleasant relationships with the finest student body in our land, in my estimation. I have greatly appreciated your friendly and cooperative spirit, your willingness to work in the best interests of an improved educational program for CCHS, the pride you exhibit in your accomplishments, and the high standardsof conduct you have established for yourselves. All students should recognize the demands made upon the individual today by our highly complex and competitive society. The launching of the Sputniks, sym- bolic of the technological advancements being achieved by a nation dedicated to oppose our way of life, served notice that the youth of our nation must prepare themselves better than ever before. This is the challenge you face. You must realize that America is asking more of her youth today than at any other time in history. To prepare yourselves for the future will require hours and hours of dedi- cated study, a desire to excelrather than succumbto the philosophy of mediocrity, and a realization that the ultimate destiny of this great nation of ours rests with the dignity and worth of the individual. The character of the individual determines the character of the nation. I have great confidence that our CCHS students are prepared to meet these challenges. Do you share with me this confidence? L, H . SHILLINGLAW Principal Assistant Principal A busy life is led by Mr. Jack Wishmier, our new assistant principal. His typical school day starts by taking care of the attendance reports. He also serves as a counselor with parents, students and teachers concerning guidance and discipline. Active in school functions, Mr. Wishmier helps organ- ize and promote activities and generally keeps everything running along smoothly. 4 1- LQCCV1 VV fwfr- ' flkf' V V if yfv' Dflffvuqfs-ff X Y 'A 4 I, fu 14 VA E ' gf K f ,fr ff I 1' as L L Z, ,1,v,M7'f 4 caxfg v,L1!,VQ L4 Q Q, LX ' I ' t LMT 'if AJ 1 .li ,L If 'Lslfgi-1 Wlft-'khfg Counselors Have you any questions about jobs, colleges or scholar ships? Mr. Earl Young, in his second year as Cherry Creek's boys' counselor, will answer these questions. Mr, Young helps the students with their problems and assists them in planning their vocational and educational pro- grams. Among his many activities are administering the school testing program, and helping the students with schedule changes. Like a quick analysis? Wanda Collins, girls' counselor, has a couch ready any time. Your problems, complexes and phobias will be analyzed in no time. Counseling, sponsoring Big Sisters and teaching senior Psychology and Criminology seem to be a full time job for Miss Collins, who is now in her third year at Cherry Creek. Superintendent' CLARK D. The excellence of the English instructors, themselves, combined with their warmth and sincere interest in both teaching and their students, softens the blow of weekly themes, two-thousand word research paper, ATLANTIC MONTHLY assignments, and all those red pencil marks! HARRISON SHAFFER ALETHA ROWLEY SUE FAUBION MAURICE LA E ARDEN SEEGER J. C. STEPHENS 56,1 0 !2fcK '77f.p7jf 'L' The social science department is one of the biggest at Cherry Creek. The psychology classes have spent a semester at general psych, then they studied criminiology. The Advanced Social Studies Seminar has effectively criticized almost everything that can be done on this earth. American Social Sciences RICHARD STAMPE WANDA COLLINS DEAN HUGHES and World History are still pretty much the same as they always have been since history hasn't changed much, World geography classes have inter- esting projects. The American problems class has solved all the country's problems and is sitting back and laughing. Mr. Hughes relaxed! Where were you at the murder? Foreign Languages GENEVIEVE WILSON HARRISON SHAFFER MARION WHEELER Qlswfw-W .HI ,I-A-H.- An exceptionally large number of students are enrolled in foreign language courses. Plus learning to read and, in French and Spanish, speak the language, these students acquire a knowledge of the customs of the country where these languages are spoken. French, Latin and Spanish banquets highlight the outside activities of the foreign language classes. WM they're cheating? Oh. you are a doll Science Don't spill it, John. A little lab equipment makes a big smell. Q ND RAY MORTON FLAX Dam, I've got fifteen drawings left to do and they've got to be in tomorrow. This is the lament of Mr. Ray's biology students. They also do lab work, like atsqueam- ish amoebas beautiful eludia leaves. Ask any student what that foul odor from the lower hall is and he will tell you it is the chemistry class having a lab day. Mr. Flax's Junior chemists don't accomplish much but they certainly do make the place smell. LILLIAN RIBLET ELINOR REECE I MERLIN RA ISER CHARLES McLAIN . ,V xy, x If you 're one of those who like T-squares, slide rules, lots of exams, quarterly failure notices, parent-teacher conferences, three hours of homework each night. . .if you like to show off that high L Q. of yours and fearless- ly face this challenge, then math is the course for youl BUT, if you don't, math is still for you, -j-it's required! Cherry Creek is justly proud of its mathematics depart- ment. Not only are the usual courses offered, but also advanced ones, including geometry, fplain and solid combinedj, trigonometry, and that fatal math anal. JOHN PLATT w. D. HUNTER athematics A little Finnish mathematics. We understand income tax forms. EDITH RICE Many of C. C. 's future secretaries and executives are enrolled in business courses. The classes offered in this field cover a wide range, varying from personal typing to advanced business training. Advanced Business at Work usiness Education Shorthand WALLY HUNTER 'HSWW Home Economics The courses in this department are de- signed to acquaint girls with basic skills in sewing and cooking. The home ec rooms are equipped with sewing machines and cooking facilities enabling these students to make practical application of their knowl- edge. Home living offered to both boys and girls, helps prepare students for the prob- lems encountered in family living. i EDWINA BRADY 5 3 F DNQQ N 1 iCWfLff1E ?1E!M H Music The Chorus RODNEY WYLIE WILLIAM KEITH Under the expert direction of Mr. Keith and Mr. Wylie, the chorus and marching band has been active in representing the Cherry Creek student body. The chorus caroled at the junior high and elementary schools and presented an operetta. The band per- formed at the home football and basketball games. The Band HARRIS ON SHAFFER Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Picasso have nothing on Cherry Creek art students. The art students learn to draw fcave etchingsj, paint Ccarsy, and to make ceramics fvoodoo dollsj. With a little ingenuity they can turn out an African fetish faster than the Africans. Drivergs Education Turning left with a right turn signal in the right hand lane is only one of the problems Mr. Stampe has encountered in the drivers' ed class. Some of the others have been almost hitting bridges, horses and various other physical objects. But by the time the class is over everybody is safe and sane. -fiff-?'1-?,fi'17 ' , , , 5 li Arc RIC HA RD STAMPE Speech Learning the art of public speaking - who says we don't already have it? - has kept the Speech classes busy this year with debates and discussions. With a hammer and a saw the industrial arts class can build anything or so they say. They build bird houses, sharpen knives and get themselves stuck in the glue. LAWRENCE CARMICHEAL The administration and the teachers play a great part in any school. But one must admit, however, that it is the students of a school who are of greatest importance. By the success of their many projects they have managed to enjoy a luxurious senior trip, and present the school with a gift. SVOA5 U QD 'J 76 bw 0 ca J 30 KI Football The 1958 team that represented Cherry Creek High School is a team of which we are justly proud. After a disastrous practice game schedule, the boys really found themselves and rose to the occasion each week in conference play. The word champions, which they are, best describes this team. In the face of great obstacles, they did their job and did it well. Supremem effort, organized team work, and an individual sense of pride furnished the impetus to overcome such great obstacles as lack of ex- perience, lack of overall height and weight, and, of course, ability, as compared to our opponents. Along with the terrific team attitude possessed by the squad, I feel that due credit should be given to the fine cooperation and able assistance we received from the student body, the school administration, and the assistant coaches. I wish to congratulate and to thank everyone for a job well done. Thank you, David P. It .BROCK WILLETT, Center JIM MACRUM, End LOU MORRONE, Tackle The Cherry Creek football team, after losing four straight non-league games, was picked to finish fifth in the Adams-Arapahoe Conference. The Bruins had lost most of the players that led them to a second place finish last year through graduation and needed experience. Also the gridders suffered numerous injuries during these games. Nevertheless the Bruins showed great improvement, progressively, through these games and proved that better things could be expected during the league games. Numerous Bruins received post-season honors. End Butch Seal was chosen All-Conference, All- State, and Honorable Mention All-America. The team got their only touchdown early in the second quarter when Ken Ballard ran the final seven yards after a sus- tained drive deep into Brighton territory. Bob Warren kicked the extra point that proved the difference. C. C. then had to rely on good defense as they could not score again. Brighton scored late in the fourth quarter but Don Thompson blocked the attempted extra point to preserve the victory. In the next game the Bruins ventured to Adams City to meet the heavily favored Eagles. Led by a valiant defense the Bruins played the Eagles off their feet and led 6-0 on a Ratcliff to Henry pass mid- way through the fourth quarter. At this point the Eagles started their game winning drive. It took them five minutes to move seventy yards but with thirty seconds left they scored and kicked the game-winning extra point. C. C. scored all nineteen points in the second half while their defense held Sheridan Union scoreless. After a rousing halftime talk by Coach Skene, the Bruins scored on a 62 yard punt return by Brian QTigerj McGinnity, a 28 -yard run by Ken Ballard, and a 1-yard plunge by Spike Sommermeyer. This was thes team's best defensive game of the season as the Rams did not advance inside the twenty-yard line. TIM MCKENNA, End Ratcliff combine to smash a Lion for a loss. JERRY NELSON, Tackle DICK WHITTEMORE, Fullback Cherry Creek won its third straight Homecoming game by defeating the hated Littleton Lions 26-13. The Bruins displayed their best offensive attack of the season as they completely dominated the Lions. C. C. scored first when Ratcliff passed to Seal for the only touchdown in the first half. The Bruins scored twice in the third period on a run of 72 yards by Sommermeyer, the longest run of the year, and a plunge by McGinnity to make the score 20-0. C.C. got its final tally early in the fourth frame on a 3-yard gallop by Ballard. The Lions then scored twice on the Bruin reserves. Cherry Creek, with still a possibility for a league tie, played cautious ball in beating Westminster 13-'7. By winning this game, and by virtue of Littleton beating Adams City, the Bruins finished in a tie with Adams City for the conference championship. JIM MOUNTAIN. Cross Country For the first time Cherry Creek fielded a cross country team. The harriers were coached by Kurby Lyle and participated in dual meets with conference teams and the conference and state meets. Over the season the Bruins tied one, lost two and finished fourth in the conference meet. With only one senior on the squad and the experience gained from this year, next year they should be much improved. BRUCE BERRY TOM MADDOX JOHN SHILLINGLAW PETE ROBINSON DALE TYLER Basketball Everyone regrets losing whether it be at ping pong or trying to get to the checkstand in a super market, but the person who loses and cares not for another attempt at winning has lost the edge that inspires us all to set goals for which we know we must work to attain. If our returning squadmen for next year do not lose sight of what can be accomplished we'll know that there are two ways to leave the floor when the games are over. A loss can mean more than Webster's definition. We took many, but with each loss I feel we learned many valuable lessons relating to basketball as well as life in general. I don't think we needed as many lessons as we received, but it might make us more concious of being the giver rather than the receiver when next season rolls around. They were written by that blond-haired, brown-eyed senior girl with the Pepsodent smile, Betty White. With utmost competence, Betty has served Cherry Creek as sec- retary of the student body this year. Also, she has been active in the business of the council and offers many helpful suggestions and ideas toward improve- ment of our school. Treasurer John Deuth, as treasurer of the student body, keeps a running record of the Student Council funds. Y :xg fir, l9'l .S w . Science Fair Exhibits DlA6RF'd l On Thursday, February 26, Cherry Creek held its first annual Science Fair. There were more than a hundred entries in physical science, biology, or mathematics, but most of them were from the jun- ior high. Some of the science students put on physics and chemistry demonstrations to entertain the visi- tors. It doesn't ring. The C Club again sponsored the annual student-faculty game. And, as usual, the faculty won. The students put up a very good fight, but it was not enough to stop the bruising techniques of the older men. The final score of 34 to 29 did not tell the full story. Don't tell me you're tired. Student-Facult CZTIZG Clobber that teacher, Dale! The students this year played the best game that has ever been played against the faculty. At the half the faculty had only a one point lead, but this was increased to five points in the second half. Maybe next year the students will win the game, but this year the game is over. Senior Pla The senior class presented The Curious Savage' on February 21. The cast included Dee Manning Linda Haneborg, Suzanne Tamblyn, Lora Raymond, Dana Haskell, Betty White, Brock Willett, Kent Robinson, Wally Boggess, Gerry Nelson, and Larry Donoghue.
