Sequoyah Cherokee High School Canton, Georgia Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Nine Delia Hattendorf—Editor Mrs. E. O. McFather, Jr.—Advisor n education is everyman’s personal Odyssey ... it begins when we begin and lasts a lifetime ... a life- time of learning in which some learn only that while no one can learn everything, one must try nevertheless ... it is a sweeping dash along an uncharted course ... a journey brushed with tears and sprinkled with laughter and softened in the afterlight of time . . . There were many roads, many paths . . . but there were times and places where we walked for awhile together . . . this was such a time ■ . . this was such a place . . . It waited, silent in the quiet cool of any one of a hundred mornings . . . the empty halls stood oddly hushed, waiting for the bell that set it all in motion . . . the motion of people on the move ■.. We walked together . . . dozens of component parts working with something less than com- puter accuracy . . . but working, nonetheless, in a unit that makes a song, seeks a victory ... or sits, listening . . . learning . . . We ran down halls that knew our footsteps and rooms that knew the sounds of our voices, the feeling of our laughter, the texture and fiber of our being ... for only with the steps and the voices and the laughter and the silences could the building mean anything ... Only then did it have a texture and fiber of its own, made of the fifteen hundred components. . . . Henry David Thoreau said, If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he has heard a different drum- mer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.” As the years passed and we passed on, we became different people, listening for the strains of the drummer ... we stopped at times, but only to remember where we’d been before or to think just where it was we were going ... As the beat from the drummer con- tinued, there were more and more who chose different destinations . . . they heard his distant music . . . they went to cut their own paths and they learned to stand alone . . . Yet we learned that one cannot move toward any destination without direction . . . without sign posts or rules or a framework, a map of some kind now and then . . . Grade cards schedule cards report cards parking stickers admit admittance slips tardy slips absentee slips daily bulletin bulletin board a grade card report card report the grade on the card . . . We learned that one cannot he different without something from which to differ . . . that there can be no individuality without a previous companionship . . . The Odyssey takes different shapes for us all .. . some travel on a clear-cut road from here to there without a question asked between . . . yet there are far more who wander like Alice through a variety of Wonderlands, finding it all curiouser and curiouser.” 17 We met along the road one who had been there before us ... in the noise and the confusion he listened quietly ... in the face of a thousand problems he listened to ours . . . with sure firm hands he took the components and shaped them into a single unit ... yet we, the components, remained individuals he knew one from another . . . 18 I am not a teacher, only a fellow traveler of whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead— ahead of myself as well as of you.” Bernard Shaw Mr. Edivin R. Casey 19 Features ' n the move . . . alive and young and with youth’s exuberance for moving, j or going somewhere, anywhere ... yet there were places we would like to have lingered . . . times we would like to have held in our hands for a while longer. . . . Sometimes in the shadows of night we walked with illusions . . . the pageantry of Camelot at the football Halftime ... a twentieth-century Arthur pulled a sword from a stone, and the legend lived again ... there were our traditions, too ... the roaring blaze of a bonfire ... the excite- ment of a parade.... We wandered down a narrow winding street dimly lit with candles . . . Kingston Town . . . silver stars shown in a midnight sky, and one could forget the cold winter night outside in the world . . . we had the trade winds and a sailing ship, and for an evening that was all the reality anyone needed. . . . We walked down the real roads by day and the going was not always easy . . . but for some the roads were more than a prescribed course of action, more than a route taken because it was the only way . . . some looked at it all as an adventure . . . they laughed and liked the chal- lenge . ■ . they had the spirit to meet the world head on and the imagination to season it with the magic of their dreams.... Bonfire Farade Expectancy . . . anticipation . . . Here they come!” . . . the blare of the brass section against a sunny sky . . . little children clutching the necks of long-suffering daddies . . . youngsters standing on everything ... a swirl of faces . . . from a convertible the casual wave and a pasted- on smile. . . a fantasy of floats . . . whales and chicken feathers and ... a rolled tree? Halftime Commotion in the stands as players trudge off the field . . . time for a hot dog, popcorn, coke ... No 1 want to see the crowning!” ... a land called Camelot . . . How do they work the stone?” . . . evening gowns on a football field . . . tension . . . will I be? . . ■ won’t I be? . . . the sword comes loose to smiles and tears . . . complacent parents settle down to enjoy the second half . . . but the excitement goes on .. . ■ 26 SENIORS: left to right—top: By- ron Vann, Becky Poore, Sally Cau- ble, Fran Holcomb, Lynn Stell; bottom: Patsy Hobgood, Kenny Askew, Bill Campbell. Down the way where the nights are gay And the sun shines daily on the mountain top, I took a trip on a sailing ship And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop. But I’m sad to say I’m on my way, Won't be back for many a day. My heart is down, my head spinning around; I had to leave my love in Kingston Town.” 42 • “Jamaica Farewell Sailing down a fair wind for Jamaica —across three hundred years in time and a thousand miles of sparkling sea . . . down narrow winding streets, past buccaneers and treasure chests and dimly lit cafes . . . to a pirate ship with reefed sails and a spiderweb of rigging set against a blazing sunset . . . laugh- ing and spinning our dreams, we forgot for awhile the real world we’d left behind . . . and with our voices whis- pered echoes from a past we’d only these few moments known ... a past with golden sands and a bit more magic than our present . . . perhaps because it was the past . . . mswmtmk -m mm r m %! ► ! j j0 ni i a. x ss ft rs Top left: Cindy Mulkey, presenting a monologue in which a country girl goes to Hollywood. CASEY MIKIfAl Dear Students, Please accept ray warm congratulations upon your successful completion of the 1968-1969 school year. A special congratulations to those of you who will graduate this year. I know the pride your families and friends feel on this occasion, and I share it. You and I cherish the same high ideals----ever larger freedoms, ever brighter opportunity for individual fulfillment for all mankind. We realize these ideals can be fulfilled only by cooperation, respect, self discipline, dedication, love, and a genuine devotion to our God and our fellow man. We all share the continuing task of improving and perpetuating these ideals and translating them into reality. It is not my job alone, not yours alone. It is ours together. No one realizes more than your principal that success will depend in large measure upon the priceless legacy you carry away from these halls, the knowledge you hav won here, the stronger and more certain faith in yourselves that you have won here. You have my best wish for a lifetime of success, happiness, and achievement. Very Sincerely, Edwin R. Casey Standing: Mr. N.R.
