€ The 1968 SEQUOYAH ... a year's life condensed in but a few short pages ... pages which attempt a portrayal of the inexhaustible supply of FLEETING MOMENTS of our generation ... a generation set against the backdrop of a single year at Cherokee High Scnool ... The whole story you won’t find here ... only pieces ... such pieces as to jog a thought ... stir a small remembrance ... a certain activity ... a special personality ... But when the mists of years cloud these days, the SEQUOYAH ... serving as a torch ... will sear the past to bring back perhaps a smile, perhaps a tear ... but always ... a memory ... 3 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION .................. 6 DEDICATION.................... 16 FEATURES ..................... 18 SPORTS........................ 58 ACTIVITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS .... 88 CURRICULUM .................. 130 ADVERTISEMENTS .............. 196 Cife Js Made Jleeting Moments There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white. Robins will wear their feathery Whistling their whims on a low fence wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly. And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone. fire 7 Moments of Anticipation and frustration A beginning in the fall ... the crisp scent of burning leaves ... a -sky as blue as only an autumn sky can be ... The Kaleidoscope of moods changes ... orange ... red ... black ... a crowd melting into one powerful force of action ... the hunger for a victory ... a bold step toward the final development of a person aglow with the flame of life ... 10 Moments of Relaxatum A moment for thought ... a break in the hectic events of the day . .. meditation ... a chance to gather with friends . .. freedom to be yourself in a world of mechanical in- difference ... a flight from sound and fury ... an escape from the ever-mounting pressure of the struggle to be an individual ... Long hours, little recog- nition . . . frustration which dwindled the staff to a bare minimum of hands. .. Ad- justment as great ambitions and bold plans became over- shadowed in a concentrated effort and a desperate rush to get the book out on time. Excitement over well-pro- duced pictures, relaxation after a long day, decision in a moment of crisis, a final expectation as we awaited our finished product . .. The 1968 SEQUOYAH ... now an achievement which we hope, in reflec- tion, will spark a memory. Cherokee High School ... we salute you . .. and in parting, try to leave with you a fading glimpse of the many FLEETING MO- MENTS loved by you in 1968. Special recognition to the Village Shoppe for the can- didates’ clothes ... to Alex- ander Studio for the color pictures ... to Delia Hat- tendorf and Linda Nichols for their devotion to SE- QUOYAH '68 ... and to all other loyal supporters ... And to Mr. Edmond Laird for his undying sup- port, trust and devotion. MITZI WHITMIRE CISSY JONES 224
