ADMINISTRATIO The man you just saw go hurriedly through the hall is our principal, Mr. Lloyd Brown. It's no wonder he is in a rush . . . ihaving to take charge of rationing, scrap and stamp drivesg besides all of the usual work which he has to complete. To the man who does a thousand duties at oice, we extend our praise for a job well done. . . Vice Principal Pittsburg, Kansas Chemistry, General Science Our school board has had a job this year of not only conducting the business necessary for running our school, but also carrying out the wishes of the United States Government in the war effort. They gave Mr. Brown the authority to arrange the school's curriculum in any way which he believed right for students to acquiie an education and cooperate with the government. All concerned have done a fine job and we are proud to have had them as our leaders. He has a real love each month, but the girls like it. Well, we can't make as much fun of this year's Freshmen as We have before, because they really caught on to the customs and tricks around here which have become laws. By the end of this year, they were even finding their way around. They had different ideas, too-one day they extended their noon hour and had a party in the gym under the supervision of their sponsors, Miss Grace Bennett and Miss Mary Costello. We're sorry Freshies that we made fun of you-you know, about finding your way around at the first of the yearg because you are a swell bunch. Mr. Bcurnonville is now the head football and Mr. Neely is a lieutenant in the U. S. Navy COACH BUNK BOURNONVILLE Co-Captains ' DON HALL LOREN WILLIAMS coach at Pittsburg High School FOOTBALL 1 . Greetings, folks, this is your sports scribe bringing to you the sports of CCCHS this year in as small a space as possible. Although the Columbus squad under their coach, Lee Bunk Bournonville, failed to emerge from the league standings in one of the upper berths, they displayed talents of a championship team time after time. On September 25, Bunk's eleven played a bang-up game against a strong Picher Gorilla team and finished in a 6 to 6 tie with the Oklahomians. The next three games the Titans seemed to be constantly followed by some sort af a jinx as they lost to the Iola Mustangs by an uncalled for 28 to 0 score. On October 9, the Independence Bulldogs took the locals by a decisive 25 to 13 victory. Tlhe following Friday the Columbus boys were again defeated, this time by Miami, 19 to 0. - 1942'S TITANS V ' K First row: Bob Atkinson, Ed Bjadney, Rollin Smith,'Robe-rt Harwood, Bob Teel, Edgar McWethy, John Newton, Claude McClanahan, Claude Hoffman, David Fleming, Clifford Waggener, Dale Richards. V Second row: Jack Myers, Junior Lowrie, Donald Jarrett, Frank Fragnella, Olen Campbell, Galen Chris- tiansen, Loren Williams, Henry LaRue, Don Hall, Joe Brown, Jack Winter, Stanley Faulkner, A. J. Armstrong. October 23, it looked as though the Titans had final- ly hit their usual stride by setting back Ft. Scott eleven to the tune of 98 to 12, but all seemed in vain the CCCHS footballers lost all of their concluding games. On October 30, Coffey- ville romped over Columbus by El wide margin of 32 to 0. Again on thc following: Friday Joplin who renewed rivalry with the Titans after a number of years, defeated the Titan crew by another A TOUGH PRACTICE laige score, 44 to 14. The final tilt of the 1942 football season came on November 13, on the annual rivalry grudge game between the Pittsburg Dragons and the Titans. to repeat, as the two previous years, 'fBunk's men lost in a last minute tussle by one touchdown. This game was the last high school game in thc career of four seniors: Don Hall, Frank Fragnella, Edgar McWethy and Claude Dusty McClanahan. The boys who will be back next year to carry the colors of CCCHS are: Loien Wil iams, endg Don Jarrett, tackleg Claude Hoffman, guardg Olen Campbell, endg Jack Winter, backg Jack Myers, backg and Junior Lowrie, back. From the looks of prospects for next year's gridiron bullies at CCCHS there is no mistake in predicting' a championship team for 1943-1944. It is not known yet who is to succeed coach Melvin E. Neely. -Q I ., s 5 ' ,Q- TINNEY BATTLING AGAlNST FORT SCOTT l 4 SKNBASKETBALL l U Q YARSTTY TEAML' A A n BASKETBALL SEASON'S SCORE .,, , Colunibus Picher Columbus 3 Columbus Miami Columbus Columbus Alumni Columbus I Columbus Picher Columbus V Columbus Weir Columbus ' Columbus Altamont Columbus if 'Columbus Pittsburg 2 ,it 1 L Left to plight: p Mer1ie,14Masters,on 8 Jackie . Yes fans, the basketball season of 1942 and '43 turned out to be a glorious one for the Titans. Out of their twelve regularily scheduled games Columbus lost only four. Two of the losses were to the Pittsburg' Dragons, whom the Titans defeated to earn their way to compete in the state tournament. The Titans first loss came on February 2, a loss that marred the perfect record 'of six straight by Bunk's quintet. Immediately following' the Pittsburg-Cob umbus tilt, Coach Bournonville accepted the head football coaching staff at Pittsburg' High School and assumed his new duties just before the Columbus squad overpowered a strong Joplin Eagle Five. The preceding' week Columbus again was upset by the Pittsburg basketters. The locals' other losses were to Joplin in an overtime period and to Weir. The squad was composed of four seniors-Eugene Lawrence, Calvin Dill, Merle Masterson, and Bill Tinney. Three juniors-Jack Winter, Junior Lowrie, and Olen Campbell.
