C. C. H. SJ KANSAS, MONDAY, MAY 20, 1829 NUMBER 1 COLUMBUS T0 HAVE BIG IMPROVEMENTS SOON NEW GYMNASIUM HEADS LIST OF PRONOUNCED CHANGES Motion Picture Machine Is To Be Bought, and New Schedules In Athletics C. C. C. H. S. will be an en- tirely different school next year. The students who attend the Cherokee County Communi- ty High School will have the same privileges that are ex- tended to students in the high schools of large cities. No more will basket ball fans be forced to stand up i11 a crowded space to see the game. No more will there be the general dissatisfaction with the Dickin- son point system. During the March meeting, the board let the contracts for the new gymnasium. XVork started at once. The building will stand in the midst of the grove, and several trees were 1l9C9SS211'il5' rooted up. The shed for the tools and ma- terials was then built. The April rains stopped rapid prog- ress in digging for the founda- tion, hut the workmen con- tinued their work in the mud. The building will be finished by August. In April, Principal Ethel LOCK and the board made plans for supervised study for the Coming years. A sixty-five- minute period will be alotted to each subject, twenty-five for study and forty for recita- tion. The teacher will have an 0DDOrtunity to start the stu- dent out correctly in his study- ins. He will be expected to continue his lesson at home as the teacher has directed him. This system will be an added improvement to the C. C. C. H, S. schedule. Five periods only will be offered. Columbus students will be assisted in their class work by a motion picture machine. This machine will be used for class work only and will provide the pupils with a view of various lines of wo1'k connected with their subjects. Short history and English films will also be given. Another added improvement to C. C. C. H. S. will be round- robin schedule in football and a double round-robin schedule in basket ball. The standing of the teams will be figured by the old percentage system in- stead of the Dickinson point system. This percentage sys- tem will create a better feeling between the schools in the S. E. K. league. P-aul Hawkins, former super- intendent of schools will be head track coach next year and assistant football coach. This will give Coach Henley more time for basketball and provide an efficient track team associa- tion. Mr. Hawkins will also teach social science subjects. The graduating class of '29, although having no opportuni- ty to benefit from these changes is proud to see old C. C. C. H. S. improved, and leaves to the underclassmen best wishes for the success of these changes. - Ted Lynd, Clark Storey, and Clio Hudson motored to Vifeil' yesterday, where they er1i0Yed several games of p00I- ioi Willie Niggeman and Robert Millner were ejected from the theatre Thursday Night when they attempted to obtain a free piece of China. S. gridste1's, un- der the leadership of Coach Du- bach provided the outstanding event of the school year when they defeated their old rivals, Pittsburg, in the annual Tur- key Day grid classic, by a score of 6 to 0. The men who journeyed to Pittsburg had in them the de- termination to win, and win they did. Each man on the team was inspired. At no other time in the year did the men display their fight as they did against their traditional rivals. With the best team in the district in 1927, Columbus de- feated Pittsburg by a score of 28 to 6. In that year, the fails had a chance to see the second team run in on their opponents, but the feeling that came with the victory of 1928 was even more satisfying. The alumni home from col- lege attended the game with 2111 uncertainty in their minds as to whether the team could do as well as the invincible team of '27 had done. Outstanding in the crowd of C. C. C. H. S. sympathizers, could be lleard the stentorian voices of many collegiate freshmen wl10 had seen their classmates tr0II11C9 the Purple and Xvhite rivals only one Y931' before. Con- ccaling himself behind a screen, he listened to the tablo conversation. Startling facts were revealed! The largest scoop in the history of the Rec- ord was turned in. and this simple feature story is the re- sult. Do the graduates of 1929 know that their every move- ment is w-atched and talked about at this Round Table meeting? Five members of the C. C. C. H. S. faculty have elected Miss Mary Katherine Helniick as Princess Arthuress and take it upon themselves to weigh carefully every tidbit of news concerning the high st-'tool students and investigate their business clear down to his night before last's dctte. This group is determined to let no news escape them and have private lines all over Co- lumbus to make sure that they are informed properly about all the latest scandal on their vic- tims. Then, when all the news is properly collected, this dread assembly sits and ponders over the student's fate. Some of them are immediately disposed of by the quick sentence of condemnation, I n e v e r thought she would amount to anything, anyway. How awful is this fate from which there is no escape! The next day the whole school buzzes with the decision and the student r is either made or broken, as the case may be. This audacious reporter was surprised to learn that even the faculty does not escape the consideration of this omni- potent assemblage. What then is the student's tate? Members of the 1929 Car- michael, Cheshi1'e, Clayton High School graduating class, would it not be a privilege to be allowed to sit in on these meetings? One ot our class is so favored. Louise Waller has this wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge extended to her, but it is rumored that her ears are stopped up with cotton before every meal so that she may not hear and live to carry the news to her classmates. The members of the senior class extend best 'wishes to this Tuesday Evening Gossip Quin- tette and hope that they have properly done their bit in giv- ing the Round Table members something to talk about in the last four years. l Miss Nell Nincehelser was the feature attraction in My Man shown a-t the Hippo- drome in Joplin Sunday.
