and fortunes were made and lost Some of the 49ers returned home dlscouraged or were lost on the way but most of them re mamed and after the gold fever spent ltself became the ploneers statesmen busmess lead ers or outlaws of the new land And a hundred years later the marks of wheels cut deep ln the pralrle showed the trall of the 49ers It was ln the late autumn of 1966 that I went to New York Clty to attend the NAP CNa tlonal Assocxatlon of Psychologlstsl Conventlon The flrst meeting convened late on Tuesday mornmg and adj ourned late that afternoon Thls enabled me to enjoy the myriad slghts of the mlghty metropolls at mght I went back to my apartment to freshen up a bxt and to see what that marvelous mventxon televxslon mlght offer eer I journeyed forth for an evemng of gaxety Turning a dlal I saw the screen mlst slxghtly and then a dlm fxgure came mto focus I was surprxsed to see that the person on the screen was Bull Huff He was the announcer for one of the afternoon serlals called Bertha Faces Llfe starrmg Elmer Edmlston Immediately following that days mstallment of a most traglc eplc there was a slnglng commercial A trlo of glrls Juamta Fltzner Dawn Judd and Inez Swegle ldvertlsed one of the more atroclous stomach powders wlth this dltty Flzmo Seltzer you Helps to revlve your hver too Flzmo Seltzer IS the seltzer for you Much perturbed I declded to go flrst of all to the Metropolltan Opera House I had a tlcket for that nlghts performance of a fam ous opera Larry Pruce was one of the star performers and I felt a thrill when he sang Toreadoro' Dont spxt on the floora Use the cuspzdora After the fmal curtam I went backstage to congratulate the members of the company and ran mto Bull Garner who was stage manager for the Met We talked long about old times and he told me about some of our classmates It seems that Glenna Crawford was a magxclans asslstant and had been at Carnegle Hall only a few weeks before Ruth Allce Freeman was due to play a serxes of vlolm concerts at Carnegle Hall very soon Orval Tuedt was orgamzmg hls own band The eve nmg grew late and I asked Bull where to flnd a good mght club He promptly told me that one of the swankxest places m town was the 711 Club a gambllng casmo owned and oper ated by Edwm Grenny Takmg a tax1 I arrlved there m due txme After provmg that I was all rxght I fmally got past the doorman who was none other than Dwlght Byrum Ed greeted me lmmedl ately He seemed to know the more lmportant people around town and mtroduced me to a few I also met some more of my old class mates who appeared to crop up quite often For Instance Cheral Sumsnon now a qulte well known socnalxte was over by the roulette wheel We talked wxth her for a whlle and she told us that Betty Rowles was ln Boston and had taken Emily Posts place ln the fleld of et1 quette She had gamed fame recently by solv mg the problem of eatlng peas It was a well establlshed fact that lt wa.s uncouth to eat peas wxth a knlfe and they rolled down the furrows between the teeth of the fork So Betty sald Thats very simple-use a spoon' Whlle we were talkmg to Cheral Molly Mason the gossxp colummst for the Tlmes entered the club We talked wxth her and she ln formed me that Gilbert Hughes was the owner of the Cheney Standard O11 Company Bl Nave was domg a thrxvmg busmess as a vet erxnarlan whlle Joan Grlfflth had become an Enghsh teacher at CHS Walter Edmlston she further conflded had become presxdent of the Flrst Natlonal Bank ln Spokane and Bar bara Pendell and Anita May Spllchal were hls secretarles At thxs point Edwm came back and asked me to accompany hum to his offlce to meet someone we both knew I sand good bye to Molly and Cheral and went Wlth Ed to hxs ultramodern offlce He left me there whlle he went to fmd his mysterlous frlend and Il0tlClIlg a current copy of the New York Tlmes I took lt and began to scan xts pages Many famlllar names appeared on the front proved as chlef advisor of the FFA Keith McConnell the ambassador to Belglum had Just returned to the U S to confer wlth the Presldent on a matter of strlct secrecy In large black type the Tlmes declared that re cently m the Senate Pete Swanson QR Wash?
