EJ 2 jj xx Nm GROWING PAINS 1945-1948 September 4, 1945. lt was a lovely day. The birds were singing happily as they flitted from tree to tree, while the sun shone brightly, making diamonds of the dew still upon the lawn. This was the setting in which a number of care- free youngsters, socially known as Sophomores, hurried along the walks, up the steps, and deep into the realms of knowledge at Cheney High School. Per- haps to persons observing them, they seemed less diligent than they really were, but the little dears were really on the beam. As struggling Sophomores, they sponsored a Valentines dance, 'fCupid's Caper, with the jumpin' jive music of lack Holt and his Scholars of Rhythm. lt was admitted later that it was a twhisperl flopl But, later in the year they earned a half-day's vacation--spent in skating at Cook's Roller Rink--by sell- ing over 330,000 in bonds and stamps, enabling them to again look the Seniors in the eye. Candidates for Carnival King and Queen were Ierldine Dobbins and Ray Strieff. In April, at the Eastern Washington Music meet, Bill Rowles won the distinction of superior rating as pianist. The Iunior year started off with a BANG, their first undertaking being the football dance, A'Goalpost Gallop. This well-attended shindig brought them out of the fired into the credit side of the ledger Candidates for Carnival King and Queen were Pat Stuhr and Tom Byers ln March 1947 Mary Lou Oberst Iack Allen Mary Lotte and B111 Rowles were honored by being asked to participate in the Northwest Music Educators National Conference held in Seattle In May came the event they had long awaited the unior Prom Chinese Fantasy For this qala evening the gym was beautifully decorated to resemble 1 Chinese garden the crowning touch beinq the lov hanging ceiling of fir houghs When time for the spring sports rolled around the following super duper athletes displayed their prowess in tennis by copping honors at County gndhD1str1ct Meets ack Allen Ken Mullenix Leslie Bower Helen Bair Pat tu r And now we see these once ignorant Sophomores as wordly wise Seniors This is a good time to mention that im ohnson was a very competent Senior Manager of the 1947 Carnival And another triumph for the class was scored when Pauline Reinbold and Irvin Hull poined the rcinks of roy1lty by being rowned King and Queen of the Carnival On Febru ry 27 1948 the lights in the gymnasium xx ere once again dimmed the event the Senior Ball Moonbeims the music the Swing of Kings of the Spokane Cdako Club Eeek' The audience were qlued to their seats as the final curtain of the Senior play A Murder Has Been Arr inged fell before a capacity crowd on April 2 1948 After a final check up on grades Georgiane Wallace was named valedic torian and Pat Stuhr salutatorian of the graduating class of 1948 Now you may see by the foregoing article that the class of 48 having dis played much talent and ability will surely leave its mark upon the world' Class Officers for the three years were SOPHOMORE OFFICERS AND ADVISORS Helen Bair President Jim McConnell Lynn Harris Vice President Ray Steiner Pat Stuhr Secretary Margaret Boyes Pauline Reinbold Treasurer Betty Beall Advisors Miss Lormski and Mr Pond JUNIOR OFFICERS AND ADVISORS .Tack Allen President Bob Burns Geor iana Wallace Secretary Arnold Clausen Ray Strieff Treasurer Leslie Bower Advisors Miss Lorlnski and Mr Carroll SENIOR OFFICERS AND ADVISORS Helen Bair President Arnold Clausen Jim Johnson Vice President Jim McConnell Lyle Kaplan Secretary Dorothy Thames Irene Delabarre Treasurer Dorothy Thames Advisors Miss LOFIHSRI and Mr Smith V P v t . . Founded Iune 11, 1945, the F.H.A. is a national organization. whose aim is to strengthen and unite the efforts of all those working through home economic clubs to improve home and family life. It is composed of chartered state associations, which in turn are made up of local chapters in junior and senior high schools offering home economics. Cheney High School's local chapter of the F. H. A. for 1947-1948 had an active membership of 32 after the candle-light initiation ser- vice held early in the fall. Meeting regularly every Wednesday they undertook a number of worthwhile projects. Miss Ainslie Stevenson, Assistant State Supervisor of Home Eco- nomics, spoke to the club in November about the history of the Ei.fg.A. and contributed suggestions on how to have a more active c u .
