Into the West Into the west with the setting sun, Winged the avions, one by oneg Argonauts of the azure skies, Leaping the sea for a golden prize- Into the cwest. But the prize was only half the lure That urged the ainmen, each so sure His ship would reach the golden isles Over the sea-swept ocean miles- Into the vwest. Glory there was for every one, Winner or no in a task wefll done, Charting the skies o'er' the tossing main Making safer that long air-lane- Into the uwest. Nine huge birds on the starting line, Ready to brave those of the brine, Then 'while the thousands cheered that day, Eight rolled o'er it and four sped away- ' Into the cwest. Four fleet falcons with man-made' power Thundered a hundred miles an hrour, Bearing eight men and a woman fair On through the 'miles of trackless air- Into the Qwest. All through the night of hopes and fears, Through racking hours that seemed 'like years Kinfolk, lovers, old friend-s, and new Waited for word as on they flew- Into the Qwest. Boebel wins, broke the radio wave, Jensen second, the newsboys rave, Theirs is the joy of the earned reward. But what of the other souls that soared- Into the west? Frost and Pedlar-ah, where are they? Scott and Knope-and the girl so gay Who waved her 'kerchief in last goodbye As her namesake man-bird thundsred by- Into the uwest. Erwin is going, fiashes the fword, And off sails the great green Dallas bird, Humming a cheery radio song, Seeking its mates as it skims along- Into the swelst. S, O. S., crackll-es Erwin's wave, Harrowed, awe-struck, helpless to save, The 'world sits horrified-holds its breath, And hears two brave souls plunge to death- Into the cwest. The days crawl by-no hopeful words And- iwafted back 'of the lost Dole-birds, Tell us, oh God of the Air and Sea Where are the seven who soared so free- Into the west? Grimfly the sea its secret keeps, Locked, forever within its deepsg But now we know that seven great souls Have- flown to a landing beyond life's shoals- Into the west. Pedlar and Knope and Scott and: Frost, Intrepid Mildred, wwe know you're lost To us who live on the dusty groundg But-perhaps we envy the path you found- Into the swest. -mrwmvn A r r mu Sophomore Class - Olficers - President ..,...,....o .,..oo, . ,.oooo,.,.oo . .C ooo, Robert Riddle Vice President e..e,...,. - .eeee is Mildred Conley Secretary treasurer ....e iree, .. Their excellent sportsmanship placed Cheney as one of the outstand- ing teams of the county even if it was impossible to win the county championship. The call for players was made a week preceding the opening of school in order to prepare for an early game with Rosalia. The response was en- couraging as 20 husky pig-skin booters, including five letterman, turned out. Coach E. W. Durrwachter soon built up a team suitable to represent Cheney in the county conference games. The Blackhawks played six games, tying three, losing two and win- ning one. The first game with Rosalia resulted in a tie which seemed to be an evil omen of the following encounters. The game with Davenport resulted in our first defeat, although the boys showed a good spirit in all parts of the game. Our possession of the tie jinx was proved by the next two games, both ending in scoreless ties. The deciding game was played with our old enemy, West Valley. The Eagles made three touchdowns in the first half, pushing their way through the Blackhawks gallant defense. However, the last half of the game proved to be our time to play. The ball was pushed within a few feet of our goal three times, the last time being stopped by the final whistle. The final game with Mead gave the Blackhawks a chance to defend their honor and end the season with a de- cisive victory. Next year's team promises to be an excellent one, built up of several lettermen and other experienced players. - Summary of Games - Cheney ....,.. ......, ........ 6 R osalia ........ ..... 6 Cheney ,..,,., - ......... ........ 0 Davenport ......... ....,., . 33 Cheney ......, ........ 0 Central Valley ......... . ..... 0 Cheney ....... ........ 0 Deer Park .....s....s. -- ......... . ..ss 0 Cheney 0 ..,.r. ........ 0 West Valley ..... -- .... --19 Cheney ....... ......... 1 9 Mead ...s.. 0 -- 1930 Lettermen - Ends: Jack Davis, Elmer Easton, Harold Griffith. Twenty young hopefuls and two lettermen responded to the call for players by Coach Durrwachter. Although the shortage of experienced players darkened the prospects, a good team was, soon picked from the squad. The first game of the season with Medical Lake proved to be very close, ending in a win for the Blackhawks by a score of 8-6. In spite of this victorious beginning, our bad luck jinx again attached himself to the ball, for the Blackhawks won but six of the 19 scheduled games. Perhaps the most exciting, as well as disappointing, game of the sea- son was with our old rival, West Valley. The game was close and fast, but ended with the Blackhawks minus the two points needed to win. With seven lettermen back next year, the prospects for a successful season are very bright. - The Squad - Forwards: Cutting, Reuter, Holmquist, Hicks. Center: Rudolf. K Guards: Falk, Davis, Hair, Hampton. Manager: Bill Coman. Blackhawk Hovuvls The Sunday School lesson was about Simon Peter, and after the open- ing exercises of the class the teacher asked what Peter's other name was. A new little girl raised her hand in excitement and proudly answered, Rabbit Mr.: Here's a noted doctor who says that ill health always attacks one's weakest spot. Mrs. fSw'eetlyJ: You do have a lot of headaches, don't you dear? A little girl said to her mother: Mama, if I grow up and get married, will I have a husband like father ? I don't know, dear. Very probably you will. And if I grow up and don't get married, will I be an old maid like Aunt Mary ? Perhaps, answered the mother. The little girl thought it over for a moment. After a few weeks of learning fundamentals, they were divided into A and B squads, and A squad went into training for interscholas- tic games. The first live contests were very disappointing as to scores, but the girls did not lose heart. They kept training and practicing, de- termined to win at least one game. They came out for the better with three victories to their credit. Seven girls won letters and stars: Maxine Horn, Ella Nauertz, Arleen Taylor, Ida Showalter, Erma Manfred, Doris Bardwell, and Mildred Conley, who was elected honorary captain. The following girls won letters only: Clarice Bonstrom, Evelyn Kleweno, Max- ine Crockett, Helen Hodge, and Marcella Rolfe. -- A Squad - - B Squad - Maxine'Horn Ella Nauertz Mildred Conley Maxine Crockett Ciarice Bonstrom Evelyn Kleweno Ruth Bechtel ' Cheney Cheney .
