WARRIOR 1976 CHENANGO VALLEY JR.-SR. HIGH SCHOOL BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK VOLUME XX one Watch Out World! On a cool fall morning in the second week of Sep¬ tember, seventeen hundred students and one hundred twenty faculty members arrived at Chenango Valley for the first day of classes of the 1976-77 school year. Attitudes toward the upcoming school year varied. Some individuals entered with great enthusi¬ asm, confidence, and optimism, while others wished they were still on vacation. For almost ever¬ yone, however, the pleasant thoughts of another enjoyable summer vacation seemed far away, as the long school year had just begun. Ten short months later, however, those same students and faculty members left school with many wonderful memories and a new feeling of enthusiasm, optimism, and success. Seniors and underclassmen alike, felt themselves saying, WATCH OUT WORLD, WE ' RE COMING THROUGH, NOTHING CAN STOP US NOW. . ■ ' ‘ft - „ _ .... The Varsity and Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders kicked off the 1976-77 school year with the annual Pep Rally. With an optimistic attitude carried over from the spring of last year when the Varsity Baseball team captured the S.T.A.C. Eastern Division Title, Warrior fans anxiously awaited the upcoming sports seasons. The Rally was the debut for Fall Sports Teams as well as the newly revived Pep Club. In its efforts during the year, the Pep Club was successful in bringing back the school spirit and pride that was the trademark of Chenango Valley several years ago. The Rally was a tremendous success as Mr. John Paske, the Varsity Football Coach, Mr. deLaurentis, assistant coach, and Mr. William Weckel, former J.V. Football Coach, gave rousing speeches that put the student body in a spirited frame of mind. four Many of the benefits of our high school experience were found outside of the classrooms. Sporting activi¬ ties gave students an opportunity to develop and improve their physical and mental abilities. Although the satisfaction of winning has always been the utlimate goal of C.V. athletes, the most significant benefits were achieved through dedication and team work. This type of dedication was quite evident on the second string teams as well as the starting squads, as Warrior athletes worked together to try and make the Old Alma Mater top in S.T.A.C. Whether the sporting event brought success to the Warriors or not, the games, matches, and meets certainly produced many memories which are exciting and unforgettable to the Warrior athletes involved. Win It For the Old Alma Mater! seven You Gotta Ease on Down the Road! Although the average school day at Chenango Valley had its ups and downs, each and every day was unique and fulfilling, as it gave students the chance to be with their friends. Whether it was copying homework off a friend, playing volleyball, basketball, or football in gym classes, reading magazines in the library, hanging out by the bathrooms between classes, painting a pic¬ ture or making jewelry in art class, playing cards in lounge or study halls, blowing up the chemistry lab, attending club meeting after school or just falling asleep in class, each school day was unique. Of course, however, the major portion of the day was spent learn¬ ing. For many students, the educational part of the day was most important. These students discovered that a little bit of enthusiasm and perseverance makes the world of knowledge an interesting, and enjoyable chal¬ lenge. The Music,, the Spotlights, the People. . . Last spring, the Chenango Valley Drama Club and Music Department combined their talents in staging the famous Broadway Musical ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. The musical was performed on three consecutive evenings. In addition, a special matinee performance was given in memory of Miss Martha Millen, costume designer for Drama Club for over twenty years. The capacity crowds were brought to life by the fine singing, dancing, and acting, as the story of Anne Oakley came to life before their eyes. The 1976-77 Warrior Marching Band, directed by Mr. John Cooley made itself known throughout the year. The long, hard hours of practicing paid off as the 125 member band took first place at the 1976 Tourna¬ ment of Bands Competition. On the field, the band was led by drum major Nancy Russell and color guard cap¬ tain Peggy Tayler. The band proved itself to be a tre¬ mendous asset to the pride of Chenango Valley. ten B55SK1 lllllliliiiiiRi twelve Y ? v V If you have a goal in life that takes a lot of energy that incurs a great deal of interest and that is a challenge to you, you will always look forward to waking up to see what the new day brings. If you find a person in your life that understands you completely that shares your ideas and that believes in everything you do you will always look forward to the night because you will never be lonely. Susan Polis Schutz Let ' s Get Back on the Right Track! thirteen Yes, It ' s All for the Best! During the year, Chenango Valley witnessed many new fads, fashions, trends, and issues. The latest fash¬ ion for girls was gauchos (opposite page, upper left), while for boys it was vested suits (opposite page, right center). Ornately decorated vans (opposite page, upper right), and disco music became popular. At the same time, hard rock groups such as ' Kiss, ’ ’ (opposite page, lower left) Arrowsmith, ” and Orleans” remained prominent. C.B. radios, men ' s jewelry, and female hitchhikers became in vogue. School spirit began to return to C. V. with the efforts of the revived Pep Club (opposite page, lower right). On the national level, the big issue was the presiden¬ tial election. Three great debates were held between Gerald Ford and his challenger Jimmy Carter (left cen¬ ter). On the local level, Interstate ”88 (upper right) remained a controversial issue, while Port Crane School (lower left) was closed because of the decrease in stu¬ dent enrollments. College (lower right) became an uncertain undertaking for high school seniors, as tuition costs continued to increase. fifteen Don’t walk in front of me I may not follow Don ' t walk behind me I may not lead Walk beside me And just be my friend - Camus sixteen Tis No Sport For Peasants eighteen David Slays Two Goliaths ROW 1: Jim Benscoter, Jim Fenwick, Les Piatt, John Mitrowitz, Bill Nearing, Joe O’Neil, Steve Lamb, Rob Nearing. Warrior team conquered the two big names in STAC football, Vestal and Maine-Endwell. Chris Oswald, who led the STAC in passing, combined his kicking, running, and passing skills to drive C.V. to a 27-26 victory over Vestal, its first in history. Then to end the season on a win¬ ning note, the mighty Warriors defeated M.E. 8-6 bringing their season ' s record to 5-4. The team ended with a winning season for the second year under the fine coaching of John Paske (left). C.V. had many outstanding players this year. Seniors Chris Oswald, Rick Aiken, Dave Stroka, and junior Andy Bobik were named to first team All-STAC. Junior Rob Nearing was named to the second team and senior Mike Nolan received honorable mention. Chris Oswald, because of his excellent performance in the Vestal game, was awarded the Sun-Bulletin Athlete of the Week. Oswald’s favorite receiver, Rick Aiken, placed second in STAC receptions. Dave Stroka, Andy Bobik, and Mike Nolan led the powerful defense to a fantastic year while the two Nearing brothers, Bill and Rob, helped lead the team offensively. The J.V. team, although having a 1-8 record, showed great promise for the future. Coaches Marble and Andre continue to improve their team’s skills and have prepared them to play varsity football. nineteen MM) RIGHT: Rob Nearing shows his All-STAC stride. twenty Youth Shows Future Promise ROW 1: Larry Kozina, Rob Bobik, Bill Fenwick, Bill Aswad, Lance Bronson, Chris Mowry, Pat Heslin, Jeff Ryan, Bob Rosenkrance. Warrior baseball team once again cap¬ tured the Eastern Division Championship. The team, under the excellent coaching of Mr. Milo DeCastro, defeated Johnson City to become champs for the second consecutive year. Unfortu¬ nately, they lost the STAC championship to Ves¬ tal 5-4 in a controversial game that lasted a con¬ troversial nine innings. But the C.V. team ended the season with a successful 12-4 record. Players who contributed to such a fine year are Dave Wertman, Jon Gaffney, Rick Ruffo, John Tarbell, and Kris Brown. Basketball Review This year the Varsity basketball team suffered another rough season. The squad, under the direction of Coach Bill Case, ended the season with a 2-14 record. The Warrior team had many close games throughout the sea¬ son. Outstanding players were Chuck Thorne, Rick Aiken, and Mark Gallo. Chris Oswald, who missed the beginning of the season, came off his injury and was fine on the court. The team missed Dana Gregory, who was injured in the beginning of the season. The J.V. team was 9-4 and only one game away from the Eastern title. Pete Lasicki and Dan Lyons led the young and promising Warriors to an impressive season. Some students also raced at the high school races there on the same night. The club’s trip this year was to Gore Mountain, in mid-February. Money was raised for this trip through various fund-raising activities. The Junior High Ski Club went to Innsbruck U.S.A. on Tuesday nights this year to participate in lessons and free skiing. The members of the club were in var¬ ious levels of skiing ability and were put in various groups for lessons according to their abil¬ ity. Their advisor is Mrs. Ernst- rom. This spring, the Chenango Valley Drama Club continued its annual tradition of staging a Broadway Musical by producing the famous musical, THE MUSIC MAN. The show was the story of a con man who traveled to River City, Iowa to con the citizens into buying musical uniforms and instruments which he didn’t really have. However, he falls in love with Marian the librarian. The near capacity crowds greatly enjoyed the performances, as several familiar songs such as ”Ya Got Trouble,” Seventy- Six Trombones,” Wells Fargo Wagon,” and Till There Was You” brought back memories of the gay nineties. The most important aspect of my high school life was the friends I shared it with . . .I’m very greedy - I want to get the most out of life by doing every¬ thing I possibly can. The extracurricular program at CV is excellent, ranging from sports to music to art to language clubs. Extensive travel . . . helped to broaden my knowledge outside of the classroom. I know even though I have enjoyed some things in high school - this is just the beginning - things have got to get even better! ! ! - David Howland High School has meant growing up with people from all walks of life and understanding them for what they are . . . being able to hold my own high standards. Being in various clubs, participating in sports and being a cheerleader has made me open to different experiences. I placed cheerleading as my highest priority . . . The academic program at C.V. stands normally as compared to other schools . . . It is up to each student individually as to how much or well they are willing to apply themselves. Although I will always hold cherished memories of high school, I feel my life has just begun. - Tammy Serafini The most significant aspect of my six years here at C.V. has been my friends, my peers and the teach¬ ers who have had much influence on my life . . . they were always there giving encouragement . . . Being in music a lot, I’ve met many friends. Spend¬ ing much time with them . . . you get to see how you and others act under pressure. I gained much confidence in myself through my accomplishments . . .I’ll probably never have as good a chance to meet friends and spend as much time with them as I did during high school. - Don Whitman two hundred thirty-eight Being in drama club was a good experience in working with others for a common goal. It developed my patience and made many fond memories for me to look back on . . .1 feel that I’m definitely pre¬ pared for my freshman year of college ... My high school years were years of great excitement, happi¬ ness, and sorrow ... I gained a lot of confidence in myself ... I know people change, no one knows who will succeed or who will fail in life. That’s why I will never forget how we were at Chenango Valley . . . I really loved Chenango Valley and all the people that go there. - Helen Hines Students will realize how much they have devel¬ oped when they graduate to higher education, or to life itself . . . Extracurricular activities made high school more rewarding and enjoyable. They were important to me in that they helped me to learn to participate as a part of a team, learn leadership, and communicate with others - a very important part of a student’s growth . . . High school will be one of the biggest factors of my development in life and society after school. These past years have opened my eyes and helped me to see the many facets of life - good and bad. - Rick Miller In high school, I learned that a person can be what he or she desires. One must set a goal, have confi¬ dence , and their goal will be reached ... As far as expressing myself, activities were where I found I could be more myself than at any other time during high school . . . Cheerleading has not only brought out my personality for dealing with Chenango Valley students, but has also allowed me to meet people from other schools ... I believe that high school is an experience that, if undertaken correctly, can prepare anyone emotionally ... I am sure that someday I will consider my days of high school ’’the best days of my life. ” - Bonnie Heim two hundred thirty- . . . We ' ll Ever More, Be True!
