Twenty- seven hundred people, each having different backgrounds, ideals and goals, represented our whole school world and colored it with variation. 3 4 You ' ll Find Me In The Yellow Pages Some of us were bookworms, some of us social butterflies, but all of us enjoyed our free time at C.V. in our own special way. Whether with the whole student body, a group of close friends, someone special, or alone, these moments left memories of happy leisure times. 5 Faces Mirror Flashes of contrast were reflected in faces everywhere. What force could have motivated such mass involvement? 6 Eat ’em Up!Eat ’em Up! As vivid leaves swept the surrounding hillsides the magical moments of the football season signified something personal to each participant — cheerleader, band member, concession stand worker, graduate, team fan, anxious parent, coach or player. Everyone’s contribution was important and necessary as C.V. spirit soared higher. 8 10 Hit The Showers! After several hours of tiring brain-work relief was sought by many in the form of intramurals or team competition. For whatever personal reasons athletes had for competing, they all enjoyed themselves, but few came out heroes. 11 I 12 What Would Critics Say? A strong and growing love for the arts continued to lure people into drama club, musical and artistic activities. Interpreting the works of others enhanced group spirit for some and individualism for others. if 14 Mon o tony Mo un ts The inflexibility of the typical C.V. schedule led to a n active social life in the halls. Occasionally, boredom was relieved by a dynamic teacher, a trip to the bookstore or mass exit to the library from study hall. 15 16 When I Was Seventeen . . . Seventeen, thirty-seven, fifty-seven ... all ages worked together during the school day. Leisure time was used and sometimes abused by each in his own way, sometimes to the dismay of others. 17 It Was A Very Good Year? School reflects life itself. In the 1974 school year, life was anything but ordinary with thermostats turned down to 6$. Methods of getting warmer ranged from adding more clothing, to exuberantly complaining. Both seemed to accomplish their purpose. Despite fuel shortages, cars still spun up the driveway to fill the student parking lot on cold, dark mornings. If there was any objection to coming to school in the dark, it was overshadowed on days like Greaser Day” by mid-morning smiles. 19 20 Oh, What This Sweet Hour Yields! The spark of tradition burst into flame once again this year with the crownings of King Football and Homecoming Queen. Patti Tombs was caught unaware as last year’s queen, Marty Peterson, quickly placed the crown upon her head. Candidates and escorts from left to right were: Drew Wenn, Mary Mack, Ed Krisko, Pam Knox, Val Mason, Bill Vanca, Alice Perkins, Paul Krzyznieski, Patti Tombs and Hank Stoehr. Our somewhat surprised King Football, Bob Lally, was elected by the team. His crowning added excitement to the annual King Football Dance. 21 22 You Gotta Be Kid din 7 When students weren’t hovered over stacks of textbooks during a routine day, time was spent doing things that seemed quite surprising to some and quite annoying to others. It all depended upon who you were, what you stood for and your sense of humor. “Reflection Steals Light Out Of The Past To Shed It On The Future. ” — Schreiner President Diane Mayo Vice-President Kevin Sabin Secretary Phyllis Wendell Treasurer Jeff Neulon 24 SANDRA JEAN ABBEY Sandy” Key Club 12; Varsity Track 11, 12; Senior Leaders 10,11; Student Council Si¬ ll; History Club 12; Latin Club 9-11; Drama Club 10-12; Ski Club 9-12. French Club participated in the big event of the school year for the lan¬ guage clubs — International Night. Their activities for that evening were a French cafe, a bakery for pastries, folk- dances and displays. They went to a French Luncheon at the American Civic Association. The members raised money by selling caramel apples and baked goods at a home football game. At Christmas time, they celebrated the holidays with a French cake. Latin Club again had a busy year. For their annual Roman banquet, they dressed in togas as the early Romans did. At International Night, they wore the customary attire of a Roman, car¬ ried on some cultural traditions and sold Latin style food. Near the end of the school year, they took a trip to New York City as they have in the past. Spanish Club’s activities for Interna¬ tional Night included the popular bull¬ fight, the Mexican Hat Dance, the Cha- Cha Dance and a fencing act. In January, the club went to see a performance of Spanish singers. Members entertained at a nursing home and to raise money they worked a basketball concession and also showed movies to elementary school kids. In March they held a dance with French Club. 106 International Night Displays Talent C.V.’s language clubs contin¬ ued a tradition this year with their International Night festivi¬ ties during the Christmas sea¬ son. Each week there was a special spirit gimmick to activate team enthusiasm. Examples are: lolli¬ pops printed with Lick the Bulldogs,” and a puzzle, of which each member held a piece. A party was given at the end of each season for the players. J.V. Cheerleaders spark up spirit for the game. Members served as guides at the Senior High Open House and faithfully ran the coffee concession for all appreciative teachers. Having more funds than most clubs, Var¬ sity Club spent money in a variety of ways, including the pur¬ chase of a new coffee machine, the donation of money for Vestal and C.V. memorial plaques and the presentation of the achieve¬ ment award given to a deserving senior at graduation. The C.V. brain trust.” 142 Coach Travis found the going rough in his rookie year as a head coach in the S.T.A.C. A 2-7 record may not be impressive, but several close games were lost mainly due to inexperience and injuries to key players. Highly regarded M.E. was held in check in the season opener until an injury to quarterback Mike Hall stalled a C.V. offensive attack and weakened the defensive secondary. The State’s 1 ranked team, Vestal, was held to an 8-8 tie for 3 quarters, showing a great effort by the entire Warrior team. The outlook for the ’74 Warrior team is a very bright one because of many returning players, including Ron O’Neil, Chuck Zimmer, and Mark Dow. Outstanding individual efforts were shown this year by: Kevin Sabin, who led the team in receiving, Ron O’Neil, who led the team in rushing and Q.B. Mike Hall, in spite of his injuries, who led the team in passing. The ’73 J.V. Warriors finished the season with a 5-4 record under Coach Dave Marble’s direction. Sophomore quarterback Dave Canale set a new J.V. football record by passing for 319 yards in one game. Steve Pert did an outstanding job of rushing, including having 222 yards on 25 carries in one game. The defensive output was led by Ken Potter. The young Warriors show great promise for the future with junior team captain Bruce Heim experiencing his first year on the varsity squad. The rest of the team was composed of all freshmen. Tim MacGregor and Jack Poodiak came on the strongest of these as the season progressed. With continued improvement from the entire squad, Coach McDaniel is hoping for a big year in 74. The Warrior golf team, led by Junior Gary Durbin, completed a successful season with a 6 win, 8 loss record. Gary Durbin had an undefeated record of 14 wins, no losses, and one tie. He also won First Team All-S.T.A.C. honors. Other mentionables are Seniors Tony Hurst, Ron Harting, and Alan Simonis, and Juniors Doug MacGregor and Mike LaMonica. The team is looking forward to the upcoming sectionals on May 30. The 1973 girls’ tennis team finished with a 5-4 record this year. The team suffered three tough losses this season, losing each by only one point. Outstanding individual talent was shown by Rhonda Fortran, with an 8-0 record, and Sue Atwater, with a 6-1 record. Miss Aswad has confidence in next year’s team, even though five out of the seven starting girls are graduating. The 1973 girls’ swim team showed much improvement due to hard work. Chenango Valley sent 5 girls to represent the Warriors in the sectionals. They were: Nina McPheeters, Anne Davis, Amy Peterson, Andy Hill and Mindy Warren. There is a bright out¬ look for next year’s team because of the loss of only four graduating members. 149 Season’s Slipping Through A Net The 1974 Varsity basketball team completed a tough season with an eight win, six loss record. The team was led in scoring by Mike Hall with a fifteen point per game average. Perry Kendrick, injured when the season began, came on strongly as the season progressed. The season was highlighted by an overtime victory over Central in which Chuck Bruet hit on a last second shot, to win it for the Warriors. The team has very strong potential with six returning players from this year’s squad and several juniors on the Junior Varsity team seeing plenty of playing time. 150 That Warrior Magic VARSITY BASKETBALL: ROW 1: Mike Hall, John Moody, Kevin Sabin, Tim Miner, Tom Brown, Manager McCray, Perry Kendrick, Lance Brown, Gary Durbin, Tim Linehan, Coach McDaniel. The highlight of dual meet season this year was the upset of a strong Owego team which, at the time, was riding an eight match win streak. Co-captain Mark Dow moved up to heavyweight for the match and his victory clinched the win for C.V. At the S.T.A.C. wrestling championships. Co-captain John Kocak placed first in the 132 pound weight class. Senior Co-captain Kevin Williams led the team in pins by flattening nine of his opponents. This year Chenango Valley hosted its own Christmas Wrestling Tournament and placed third in the team standings. John Kocak was the 132 pound weight class champion and Mark Dow and Mike Lamb each won second place honors. 153 Small Dreams Of Hitting The Big Time The J.V. basketball team, under the leadership of first year Coach Sestak, finished with an 8-6 win-loss record. The successful season can be credited to the hitting of Bill Tarbell and Rick Harrison, who led the team in batting with averages of .400 a nd .381 respectively. Along with batting, the team’s outstanding pitching staff consisted of Ken Cook and Marc Pickett. The Warriors won the Suburban C division but lost a close game to J.C. in the semi-finals for the S.T.A.C. championship. The team reached the semi-finals in Section 4 play but lost to Ithaca. Coach DeCastro has only 2 starting Varsity returnees this year, Mike Hall and Ron O’Neil, but there is strong potential coming up from the J.V. team. The 1973 track team ended its season with a perfect six win, no loss record. The season was highlighted by a triangular meet sweep over Cortland and Catholic Central. The team was led by seniors Dick Pierce and Mike McNally and junior John Wilbur. Notable returnees are John Wilbur, Rick Jones, and Barry and Bruce Heim. The 1973 tennis team sported a nine win, five loss record. This year’s team will be minus the two top doubles teams from last year, Cox-Benko and Mackey-DeCastro. THE ONL Y WAY TO WIN It takes a little courage And a little self-control And some grim determination, If you want to reach the goal. It takes a deal of striving, And a firm and stern-set chin, No matter what the battle, If you really want to win. There’s no easy path to glory, There’s no rosy road to fame. Life, however we may view it, Is no simple parlor game; But its prizes call for fighting, For endurance and for grit; For rugged disposition And a don’t-know-when-to-quit.” You must take a blow or give one, You must risk and you must lose, And expect that in the struggle You will suffer from the bruise. But you mustn’t wince or falter, If a fight you once begin; Be a man and face the battle — That’s the only way to win. — Unknown 164 Questions And Answers Clockwise from right: William Anthony, Administrative Assistant; Esther M.
