JUDITH CARULLI SUSAN CHIDESTER FRANK CLARK CAROLINE COBB JOSEPH CASEY PATTY CHORDAS JACQUELINE CLUFF WILLIAM COGSWELL Rick Gehr A newcomer to San Jose, capital of Costa Rica, might be surprised to see an ox cart carrying firewood, moving slowly through the traffic-filled streets, or to see the National Theater with its beautiful construction, typical of the late eighteen hundreds, and in the background the modern, tall Central Bank. This is Costa Rica, a rapidly progressing coun¬ try, but still with a taste for its traditions. The school system of Costa Rica is expanding and the need for new teachers is greater every year. This year, in my school, there was such a lack of substitutes that we were let out of at least five classes a week. To counteract this problem, the government is working on experimental schools which start in the first grade and whose courses and teachers try to lead the student to a specific profession, which many times turns out to be teaching. This year, the teachers’ school in Heredia had a graduating class of about four hundred, and other similar schools had equally large graduating classes. Many vocational schools are in use where the student takes only about nine subjects instead of the regular thirteen or fourteen, enabling him to use, for instance, the shop and technical drawing facilities more. Keeping up with the better schooling demand is something that must be done, and they are work¬ ing on it. There are customs and traditions, how¬ ever, that they wouldn’t change for the world. One such tradition is the “Corridas de Toros.” Each year a temporary stadium is built for use during the Christmas holiday season. The stadium surrounds an arena in the middle of which is a pool of water. Then, any male who wants to, goes into the arena; usually there are about 150 or so. A trumpet is then blown and a mad bull charges in. Of course, you can figure out the object .. .run! It gives everyone a chance to be a toreador and if they aren’t quite as good as they figured, there is always the pool of water for refuge. It’s really a riot, dangerous, of course, with always about 200 injuries a year; but as I said, they wouldn’t change it for the world! Hola to everyone, Rick Gehr 22
