This is Costa Rica, a rapidly progressing coun¬ try, but still with a taste for its traditions. The school system of Costa Rica is expanding and the need for new teachers is greater every year. This year, in my school, there was such a lack of substitutes that we were let out of at least five classes a week. To counteract this problem, the government is working on experimental schools which start in the first grade and whose courses and teachers try to lead the student to a specific profession, which many times turns out to be teaching. This year, the teachers’ school in Heredia had a graduating class of about four hundred, and other similar schools had equally large graduating classes. Many vocational schools are in use where the student takes only about nine subjects instead of the regular thirteen or fourteen, enabling him to use, for instance, the shop and technical drawing facilities more. Keeping up with the better schooling demand is something that must be done, and they are work¬ ing on it. There are customs and traditions, how¬ ever, that they wouldn’t change for the world. One such tradition is the “Corridas de Toros.” Each year a temporary stadium is built for use during the Christmas holiday season. The stadium surrounds an arena in the middle of which is a pool of water. Then, any male who wants to, goes into the arena; usually there are about 150 or so. A trumpet is then blown and a mad bull charges in. Of course, you can figure out the object .. .run! It gives everyone a chance to be a toreador and if they aren’t quite as good as they figured, there is always the pool of water for refuge. It’s really a riot, dangerous, of course, with always about 200 injuries a year; but as I said, they wouldn’t change it for the world! Students Learn Fundamentals Through English Department The English department gained two new teachers this year, Miss Duncan and Miss Churchill. Three student teachers from Oneonta and Cortland taught during the first semester. The Phoenix Theatre presented “An American Family Album” on Friday, October 27, 1967. After the show, workshops were held by the Phoenix play¬ ers for juniors and seniors. Most of the English faculty attended the New York State English Teachers Association meeting held at Maine-Endwell High School in September. Chenango Valley also sent representatives to the New York State English Council Conference held in New York City in April. The special reading classes taught by Miss O’Con¬ nor and supervised by Mr. Vairo, helped students through the use of special machines equipped to train students from pre-primer through college level. Words can be read up to one thousand words a minute by the controlled reader. Filmstrips are also used to improve the student’s speed and compre¬ hension. 8 Mr. Joseph Schwarz, department chairman, discusses English curriculum with new teachers, Miss Carol Churchill and Miss Nancy Duncan. No new courses having been added, seniors again took math 12X, a “modern mathematical analysis” and the Advanced Placement Math course. Taught by Mr. Tosh, the 15-member Advanced Placement class qualified for college credit by taking the exami¬ nation in May. Extracurricular activities, under the direction of the Math Department, included Mathletics, a timed prob¬ lem solving competition among area schools, and Junior High Math Club, both under the supervision of Mr. Vianese. Several classrooms were combined to make these laboratories much larger than the previous laboratories. For those who wish to continue in a specialized field of study, senior high courses in biology, chem¬ istry, physics, and Advanced Placement Biology are offered. Chemistry Regents are still based on the state’s experimental course. Four new teachers have been added to this year’s staff. Mrs. Avis Reed is teaching junior high science. Mr. Tobias Polgreen is also a junior high science and math teacher. Mr. Willi n Ames and Mr. Thomas Kleeman teach senior high science: Mr. Ames took over the leadership of the physics classes and Mr. Kleeman is teaching Advanced Placement Biology and general science. Mr. Kleeman ponders his profession as a science teacher. As advisor of Chess Club, Mr. Croman aids Barry Kelly in a game of chess. 125 Mrs. Press performs two phases, research and exploration, of her duties as a language teacher. Efficiency Emphasized The Business Department, headed by Mr. James Wheeler, offers courses essential for a prosperous career in business. Bookkeeping, Office and Secretarial Practice, Business Law, Typing, and Shorthand are the fundamental divisions of this department. Row 1: Mrs. Marion Cook, Albany State; Mrs. Rose-Marie Fox, Rider College. Row 2: Mrs. Marcia James, Skidmore College; Mr. Frank Kaminsky, Bloomsburg State. Row 3: Mr. James Wheeler, Chairman, Hartwick College; Mrs. Virginia Zellner, New York University. 126 Linguistic Skill Valuable Foreign languages broaden a student’s life by showing him the way people live in other parts of the world. The ability to speak and understand another language is in¬ valuable. Miss Baker and Miss Creagh, both French teachers, are new to the department this year. Besides teaching a language, these teachers travel during the summer to become more influential in it. Miss Baker spent her summer in France and Mrs. Press spent her summer in Europe. The language department sent representatives to the New York State Federation of Teachers at the Concord Hotel and to the Northeast Conference in New York City. In addition to teaching classes, these teachers also lead clubs. The French club, led by Mrs. Press, took a trip to Quebec, and the Russian club, led by Mrs. Roussyan, took a trip to Tolstoi Farm this spring. The Spanish club, led by Mrs. Fernandez, undertook many projects this year. Mrs. Fox and Mr. Lunde gather together the parts of their lunches. [Skills Emphasized The tea, prepared by members of the Future Homemakers of America, was presented before Christmas vacation. This department has expanded beyond the tra¬ ditional fields of sewing and cooking. New courses now being offered are nutrition, health, textiles, grooming, interior decorating, family relationships, child development, and the wise use of time and money. Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Liddy contemplate the selection of cookies at the Faculty Tea. 129 Mr. Buchmaier demonstrates voice control. Music and Art Taught Enthusiastically Two new musical groups were started this year. Together with the Senior and Junior Bands and the Stage Band, they put on a very successful assembly. The Madrigals is a group of students who sing chamber music without accompaniment. They dress in the costumes of the era of their selections. The Pop group is formed by students who sing current pop and jazz tunes to the accompaniment of the Stage Band. Miss Hassinger, a new teacher, was added to the Art staff. ! 130 Mr. Fako contemplates the future of the Senior Band. Mr. Cashman climbs a ladder to measure the backboard for repairs. Driving and Athletics Require Practice Miss Papa and Miss Hibner, two new physical education teachers, were added to Chenango Valley’s staff. The new swimming pool was finished in February. Classes started in the pool shortly thereafter, with the senior high boys swimming first. “Health is Wealth,” Mr. Wilson’s favorite say¬ ing, is one that most of his students learn to re¬ spect. Mr. Wilson’s active involvement of the stu¬ dent in discussion promotes much interest. The principles of defensive driving and safety procedures were emphasized by Mr. McDaniel and Mr. Durbin as the way toward proper and skillful driving. Two new cars were purchased for continua¬ tion of these principles. Students Meet Mr. Miller points out the varied aspects of politics at the Party A Convention. the Challenge STUDENT COUNCIL This year the officers of Student Council were elected for the first time under the two-party system. Each party selected its slate of candidates and plat¬ form at a party convention in the spring. The use use of the two-party system was continued this year. This system was initiated to provide experience in politics for Chenango Valley students. The members participated in an Area Exchange Day this year for the first time. Chenango Valley sent Student Council members to other schools and they sent some of their members to our school for one day. This was done to promote friendship be¬ tween the area schools and to learn how our school can be bettered by comparing it with other schools. Student Council also provided Thanksgiving din¬ ners for needy families and helped sponsor the Home¬ coming Dance. 136 President Jay Barber conducts Student Council meeting Happiness for Sue Button is being crowned Homecoming under the watchful eye of Mr. King. Rick, Marsha, and Nancy examine a map of Australia, Nancy’s destination. All traveled to the Southern Hemisphere, where they experienced reversed seasons and Christmas in summertime. An Active Year of Fun and Learning Three students from Chenango Valley were chosen last year to travel, live, and study in a foreign country for a year under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club. Rick Gehr, who would be a senior this year, trav¬ eled to Heredia, Costa Rica, a small town with a commercial section and several parks with fountains and bandstands. The Costa Ricans befriended the “gringo” (their word for an American) immediately, and Rick soon became an avid coffee drinker after accepting invitations to come over for coffee as soon as they met him. Marsha Jones, a junior, spent her year in the second largest city in Bolivia, Cochabamba, which is located in a small valley in the Andes Mountains. In February, after her summer vacation, she started school in the Anglo-Americano and took fifteen re¬ quired subjects. Melbourne, Australia, was Nancy Hohl’s home this year. Nancy, a junior, toured several areas of the continent including Sydney and the capital, Can¬ berra, where she met the U.S. Ambassador to Aus¬ tralia. 138 New Experiences and Culture in U.S. Two Rotary-sponsored exchange students came to C.V. this year to study. Virginia “Vicki” Ruiz arrived on August 19, 1967 from Cochabamb a, Bolivia, and Mary McKenna arrived from Melbourne, Australia, in January. Both were members of the junior class. Vicki first became interested in coming to the United States through newspaper articles. She had read much about the U.S. and wanted to learn more. She hoped to get to know many new people and to improve her English. She said that C.V. was “very different” from her school in Bolivia; here we have more “good materials” such as textbooks. Vicki’s ambition is to teach elementary school, probably one of the primary grades. Her favorite sport is swim¬ ming, but at C.V. she enjoyed watching both football and basketball games. Snow was another new ex¬ perience for Vicki, but she soon grew to like it. Sum¬ ming up her stay, Vicki said, “It was very nice here, and a good experience.” Mary, the oldest of eleven children, saved money along with her parents in order to come to America. Her parents sent her as a token of appreciation for her help in raising her many brothers and sisters. Jay Barber and Vicki Ruiz prepare to cut the cake at Vicki’s welcoming reception. Mary McKenna and Rotarian host Mr. Kalmbacher meet for the first time as Jay Barber and Celia Sisson stand by. 139 SENIOR HONOR SOCIETY Row 1: Pat Scrivner, Kathy Murphy, Martha Taylor, Pat Saam, Jennifer Mason, Lynne O’Brien, Judy Fleming, Jeanette Smith, Joanne Ralston, Elaine Williams, Faith Prentice, Sue Pierce, Joanne Layton, Lee Ann Holt. They also planned a day trip later in the spring. Members of Junior Leader’s Club helped out the gym teachers this year by assisting them during gym classes and officiating at intramurals. Traditionally they have shared the basketball coat check with the Senior Leaders, and this year they were given full responsibility of it after the first few games. This, however, did not reflect the effort put into practice and games. A large part of the difficulty was the stiff- er competition encountered in the newly-formed STAC. The outstanding ability of the defensive team, one of Chenango Valley’s best ever, was shown throughout the season, and especially in the contest with un¬ defeated Vestal. The unpredictable Warriors were the only team capable of holding Vestal scoreless during the first half, and held a halftime margin of 6-0 as they scrambled into the locker room. Our gridmen were overepowered by the strong Golden Bear offense in the third and fourth quarters, however, and suc¬ cumbed in a 19-6 loss. The excellent defense was a result of the efforts of linemen Andy Sopchak, winner of an All-STAC Honorable Mention, John Wright, John Zellner, John Burtis, Craig Smith, Bill Perkins, and Gene Flint. Defensive backs Craig Harting, Mike Phillips, Bill Comfort, Bob Warfield, and Joe Casey carried out efficient pass defense. Linemen on the offensive team included Don McPartland, Bob Bennet, Andy Sopchak, Jim Popeck, Tom Cross, Bill Perkins, Joe Kendrick, Craig Harting, and Bob Warfield. Backfield starters included Dan Conrad, Jay Barber, Dick Knapp, and Terry Holcomb. Harriers Remain Undefeated in Dual Meets The Chenango Valley Cross Country team this year continued the distinction of being undefeated in dual meets since the sport began here by winning races with Susquehanna Valley, Owego, Johnson City, and Maine-Endwell. At the Shaker Invitational, the Warriors placed sixth, and Bud Sweet finished third in a field of fifty-si x runners. The next two large meets were the Baldwinsville Invitational, where the team took ninth out of twenty-five schools, and the Sid Stock Invi¬ tational held at Arnold Park. The Chenango Valley Invitational was won by Meyers, a team from Pennsylvania, which also won the next meet in which our harriers competed, Ald¬ ington Heights. In this race, Chenango Valley took third, which began their comeback late in the season. Second places in the STAC meet and the Sectionals showed a greatly improved team. The Junior Varsity team took first in the Sid Stock Invitational, second in the C.V. Invitational, third at Abington Heights, and first in the STAC meet. The team was sparked by All STAC star Joe Ken¬ drick, promising junior Jerry Newby, corner shooter Andy Sopchak, 6-5 center Dave Brenner, and the re¬ maining starting spot was shared by Bud Sweet and Bill Perkins. Helping from the bench were Dick Knapp, Dale Leighton, Marty Bruet, Bob Smith, John Wright, and Dave Cox. Grapplers Encounter Difficulty Coach Travis’ first year brought few victories to the wrestling team as injuries and illness claimed victims in the starting lineup. Close matches were lost to Maine-Endwell, Susquehanna Valley, and Chenango Forks as a lack of upper weight power took its toll. But though the team got off to a poor start, they finished with three successive wins. Co-captain Dale Graham was the strongest winner and, teamed with co-captain Joe Casey, centered the strength in the low middle weight classes. Dale turned in a Sectional third place and John Kopalek took a surprise fourth place. Mr. Tosh’s J.V. squad ended with a 7-6 record, and some on the J.V. team look forward to Varsity positions next year.
