HIGH SCHOOL BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK VOLUME VI The Changing Season Autumn into winter, winter into spring, spring into summer, summer into fall—so rolls the changing year, and so we change; motion so swift, we know not that we move.” Autumn, winter, spring, and summer— the changing year which brings something new and different each time. Here at Che¬ nango Vallpy, autumn brings football and rallies; winter brings parties and skiing, while spring brings proms and graduation. These are a part of our lives just as the seasons are a part of the changing year. Thus with each year—seasons return, but for the graduating class of 1963, the past six years will return only in our mem¬ ories. To help us remember these seasons of youth, we present the 1963 Warrior. Alma Mater We love Chenango Valley Its river running through We love the hills around us Reaching to the skies so blue. When high school days are over We’ll strive to paths anew But to the colors red and gray We’ll ever more be true. Photo Courtesy Binghamton Press We Dedicate IF With appreciation and gratitude, the senior class of 1963 dedicates the Warrior to the entire faculty at Chenango Valley. Being our friends and advisors as well as our teachers, each and every member of the faculty has influenced our lives during the course of the last six years. To you, who have given us sight into knowledge, we dedicate this annual. The squad, guided by Head Coach Mike Durbin and Line Coach Frank Kaminsky, won 6 and lost 1. Although the team didn’t play in the Southern Tier Conference, it still met some very tough teams, like Maine-Endwell, Norwich, and Notre Dame of Elmira. Individual stars could be found in both the line and the backfield. John Truchan, left guard, and Dave Perry, left tackle, enjoyed good seasons as did center Rick Gamble. In the backfield, Jim Corey quarterbacked the offense and in the seven games threw 9 touchdown passes, tying a school record. ROW 1: Bill Connelley, Art Hierl, Jack Worden, Kevin Kirkpatrick, Rick Gamble, Ed Hogg, John Truchan, Jim Mitrowitz. ROW 2: Don Link, Dave Rinker, Dave Lewis, Jim Corey, Tom Hauser, Mike Ryan, Paul Connelley, Roy Anderson, Jim Gates, Ron Snyder. ROW 3: Coach Durbin, Mel Fahs, Bob Reid, LeRoy Deyo, Dave Perry Phil Cox, Tom Macko, Scott Lauback, Pete Majestic, Tom Tru- dell, Dave Narsavage, Kevin Slocum, Ken Snead, Coach Kaminsky, Manager Benza. ason . . . Almost! Push ’em back, push ’em back, waaaay back.” Coach Durbin, and Ed Hogg, Kevin Slocum, Jim Corey, Coach Kaminsky. Five of those passes were caught by Mike Ryan, who scored a total of six times from the end slot and was voted to the Evening Press All Triple Cities Football Team. The team’s leading scorer, however, was the fullback, Don Link, with 41 points. Art Hierl had 37 points and Tom Hauser and Kevin Slocum scored 25 and 24 points respectively. C.V. enjoyed its most successful game playing before a home crowd when it beat Owego by a record five touchdowns. It later tied this record against Homer. All indica¬ tions point to an even better squad next season with Scott Lauback assuming the quarterback slot, reinforced by a fine JV squad and last year’s returning lettermen. Marsh finished first place in CV’s last meet, held against the top teams in NYS. So great was Marsh’s victory, that he can be classed unofficially as the second best runner in the state. His resounding victory also led our cross¬ country team to its greatest victory, a win of one point over six top NYS teams. In this race CV beat the num¬ ber one and number two teams in the state, making CV’s cross-country team unofficially tops in the state. Coach McDaniel thought this would be a building year with only three seniors returning—Bradley, Brown- low, and Robinson. However, through Coach Mc- Daniels’s superb coaching, five sophomores were brought up into the forefront—Ray Smith, Dave Brinsko, Marv Berg, Greg LeRoy and John Reid. The overall record for this year was five wins, one second and three thirds. This was the third year in a row that our cross-country team has won the section 4 title. With these five returning sophomores and other up-and-coming prospects, we should win again in ’63- WEST BROWNLOW MARSHALL BRADLEY CV Invitation Trophies for 1st team— DICK ROBINSON ROW 1: Pete Robinson, Dan Bruet. As the whistle blew, Pam Hoadley, the drum majorette, led the band into another halftime show. During the football game, Mr. Fleming and his devoted musicians forced frozen fingers and lips to play King Cot¬ ton and C.V.’s fight song in an effort to pep up the crowd. During two Halloween community parades, darkness cre¬ ated a problem for all trying to read their music. Mud, rain, snow, and darkness were only a few elements our musicians had to bear while serving their school and com- lunity. Worn ragged from marching in numerous parades and mpetitions, the band looked forward to the concert sea- j on starting in November. Then, hours of practice were it! ‘equired to prepare a spring concert and three specified ft selections, which were played before professional judges n Cortland. This year, as every the Chenango Valley High ' hool Band aimed for an A in grade six music, the highest ssible achievement. They are now included with Central, North, Johnson City, Vestal, Union-Endicott and Maine-Endwell in league play. In non-league play, they have Norwich twice and Homer once, while losing to such perennially powerful schools as Owego and Sidney. Their loss to Sidney in the finals of the Christmas Invitational Tourney marked the first time in four years that they have come away worse than first place. Overall, their record is 7 wins and 10 losses, one which Coach Sharp- steen hopes to improve upon in the future. The returning players this year are Dana Hol¬ comb, Mike Ryan, Dave Cicak and Tom Macko. Dick Leahy also made the squad, but was lost for almost all the season with an illness. Up from last year’s JV squad are Dennis Cluck, Marsh Bradley, Marv Berg, Chris Shafer, John Re id and Jack Rhyderrich. Since the squad is lacking in height as a whole, it has been experimenting with several offenses and defenses to divide and conquer loftier teams. Individually, Berg with a 13.4 average, has been the team’s high scorer and Holcomb, the play- maker, has been second. These two and Macko have also excelled on defense. Ryan and Macko have been the rebounding mainstays and the fifth starter, Dave Cicak, has been an excellent all-around player. The remaining players have also played key roles when called upon, especially Shafer, Cluck and Reid. With many of the key players either juniors or sophomores, CV can look forward to giving the other schools in the Triple Cities League a run for their money. Bowling against a tough Southern Tier Conference, they amassed a record of one win against seven losses. The team consisted of: KNEELING: Deane Rink and Ron Vaughn. STAND¬ ING: Dan Spencer, Jeff Lees, Doc Brandow, and Tom Warner. The caliber of bowling turned in by the JV squad was sufficient to indicate greater things to come for CV’s var¬ sity next season. Our team, under the direction of Coach Harvey, has compiled a com¬ mendable record of 7 wins against 7 losses thus far this season. Since there is only one senior on the squad, we can look forward to even better teams in the next couple of years. Among the individual stars this year are Kent Perry and Bill Leonard. Perry has only been beaten twice out of fourteen matches and Leonard has gone undefeated in dual meets. The squad consists of Norman Donahue and Mike Scrivener at 95 pounds, John Eggleston at 103, Dave Mapes at 112, Leonard at 120, John Sutula at 127, Jerry Slater and Ivan Randall at 133, Larry Brooks at 138, Perry at 145, Dave Snyder at 154, Don Link at 165, Dick Jones at 180, and Carl Miller, the squad’s lone senior, at unlimited. Bill Chidester, the other member of the varsity has acted as a general handyman, filling in from 154 pounds to unlimited as the occasion arose. Among the awards picked up by CV wrestlers were a third place in the Novice Christmas Tourney, a second in the experienced division of the same tourney by Kent Perry and a third place victory in the Windsor Christmas Grappling Mat men! Tourney by Bill Leonard. En route to his third place medal, Leonard beat last year’s Section IV champion, making him j a leading contender for the title this year. Wrestling is not a sport in which a coach can easily pick a first team by choosing the twelve most muscular brutes in the school. In wrestling the emphasis is placed on leverage, endurance, intelligence, and desire. Exhaustive practice is necessary to gain the conditioning and timing needed to be successful in this rugged sport. It is difficult to find a sport which is better suited for preparing a youth for situations which will call for self-reliance, initiative, and ability to decide upon courses of action when pressed by time and circumstance. CV’s Warriors should be congratulated for a fine season in both their winning ways and their upholding of good sportsmanship in a sport where this can at times be difficult. Our JV squad also gave an excellent account of itself under the tutorship of Coach Lyons. When this was written, it had accumulated 10 wins against 4 losses while beating such powerhouses as Sydney and Union-Endicott. Among its outstanding grapplers were Randy Booth, Art Hierl, Keith Glover, and Andy Baskett. 57 DEMONSTRATING: Don Link, Butch Randall, Coach Harvey. The Dramatics Club has endeavored to learn the principles of production and direction, increase their acting ability, and bring pleasure to their audiences through the presentation of plays like this. Chenango Valley’s Debate Club under the leadership of Miss Angelopoulos has parti¬ cipated in ten interscholastic debates, attended the annual debate clinic at Colgate Uni¬ versity, and debated on WINR TV. Working to promote our school courtesy, many senior girls and boys have relinquished their study halls to serve as receptionists. These students are stationed at the desk in the main lobby of the school where they welcome and direct visitors to the various parts of the school. Recommend¬ ed by study hall teachers, the receptionists work effectively and faithfully under the direction of their advisor, Mrs. Cook. What is the student patrol? A seventh or eighth grader would probably answer, They’re those people who stand in the middle of the hall and grab us when we walk in front of them. What are they doing there, blocking traffic, anyway?” Well, to the seventh or eighth grader, they’re probably a bunch of big meanies. But they don’t mean to be. They just want to keep a little congestion out of the halls. It’s also quite amusing being on patrol. Standing there, they get a glimpse of the students at their most embarrassing moments. An example is when a student drops his books, which are always filled with gobs of paper. By the way . . . the Student Patrol is an organization which tries to maintain order in the midst of hall traffic. But informals will break up the monotony and add interest!” voiced another member. This discussion, like countless others, continued until a solution was finally reached. The Yearbook staff, under the direction of Mr . Van Keuren, has spent many hours discussing problems similar to this and planning the 1963 Warrior. Many more hours were spent in actually preparing pages to be sent to the publishing company. Bob Poliak, student photographer, has devoted much of his time and talent to the Yearbook. 86 ROW 1: Dick Lawyer, Treasurer; Barb Mosher, Typing Co- Editor; Janet Slagle, Editor-in-Chief; Tana Gammons, Activities Editor; JoAnn Gay, Senior Editor; Prudy Hoyt, Typing Co- Editor. Tom Macko, who was a tremendous asset to the team as a high- jumper. Undefeated in dual meets and placing well in the inter¬ sectionals, our trackmen, under the able supervision of Coach Newton, recorded another outstanding season. Quali¬ fying for the intersectionals were cinder kickers Tom Macko in the high jump, Mike Carnese in the shot put, Ed Miner in the sprints, Gary Haulton in the medley relay, Bob Brown in the half mile, and Bob Lalley in the mile. Record time of 4:25:9 in the mile made Lalley the state’s fastest. Gary Haulton also placed in the intersectional meet in his specialty. Among CV’s local triumphs were North, Central, Maine- Endwell, and JC. In the combined Utica-Binghamton meet, CV placed second and in the competition for the Northern Zone Championship, CV beat the second place school by 26 points. The Vestal Relays, which gathers together all the schools from the Triple Cities area. Although most of the individual stars of our squad were lost by graduation, Coach Newton still has high hopes for next year. Tom Macko will be back high-jumping and Jim Crosby is expected to excel in the sprints. Big things are looked for from Marsh Bradley in the 440 yard and Dana Holcomb and John Monks in the pole vault. 90 Marsh Bradley on the starting block for the 440 yard dash. A service organization, the Varsity Club has initiated much toward the project of building a Boy’s Club in the Chenango Valley area. It has now been turned over to a committee of men, as Varsity Club has done all that it can. Members of the Varsity Club work at the basketball games selling tickets. Money is lent to the athletic department to pay for referees at our athletic activities and traveling expenses when our teams go on trips. The club is later reimbursed by the Board of Education for these expenses. As a reward for their active service, near the end of the year the active members will go on an expense paid trip to the Heptagonals, an intracollegiate indoor track meet, at Cornell. 96 ROW 1: Joy Shurtleff, Judy Branick, Linda Krivanik, Lorraine Ingraham, Kathy Smith, Tana Gammons, Louise Galloway, Myra Tuttle, Mary White, Bonnie Schupp, Pat O’Neil. Some of this hard practice and much of the credit for their success can be attributed to their new advisor, Miss Aswad. French Club Girls’ Intramurals Future Homemakers U.N. Model Assembly Our Friend Hannie I remember that day I arrived in New York still as the day of yesterday. On the boat I came on were about 900 A.F.S. students, and I can tell you that they felt just as excited as I. We all were thinking the same: How will our American family be, our American com¬ munity and school, and what is this year going to bring?” We hardly could wait to get off the boat to put our feet on American soil. I met the family Cole in New York and they showed me a little bit around and then we started out for Binghamton. It was the beginning of August and so I was able to enjoy your wonderful climate for a whole month. Yes, the summer weather was really something for me. Almost every day sun! I was used to a rainy summer! Finally school started; it was there that most of you saw me the first time. I do not know what I looked like, but I can tell you that I was pretty confused and lost; so many new faces everyday, and such a big school. My school in the Netherlands had only 370 students and was certainly not so complicated built. I could write many pages about my experiences in your country. Some of you might have learned something about my country; I have certainly learned a lot about yours during this year. It is hard for me to express my thanks for the help you all contributed to bring me over here. Thank you also for the many things you did for me. 105 Senior Class Officers PRESIDENT Mike Scott VICE-PRESIDENT Brenda O’Hern SECRETARY Pam Hoadley TREASURER Mary Jean Crounse WILLIAM ALBEE Bill” Intramurals 10, 11; Varsity Club 10, 11; Letters 10, 11; Wrestling Var. 10, 11; Cross Country Var. 10; Tennis 10.
