“
As we stand upon the bridge of time gazing into the stream of the future, waves of uncertainty mar our vision of the time that is to come. We have, however, cited upon our memories a clear picture of days gone by. At Chenango Valley, the pagoda of education, the philosophers, our faculty, have conveyed to us an invaluable source of practical and factual knowledge which will be carried with us wherever our paths shall lead. The strong friendship bonds established among the students will long remain though we may be far apart. The great school spirit and good sportsmanship we have all known will always be remembered as a vital part of Chenango Valley. Thus, after our departure, we shall always be reminded of the days spent at our honorable Alma Mater as we glance through the pages of the 1961 Warrior. The Alma Mater We love Chenango Valley, Its river running through. We love the hills around us, Reaching to the skies so blue. When high school days are over, We ' ll strive to paths anew, And to the colors red and grey. We ' ll ever more be true. The fourth graduating class of Chenango Valley Jr. Sr. High School takes great pleasure In dedicating the 1961 Warrior to Charles J. Osborne. Mr. Osborne, through his advisory position on the school annual and his close contact with the students through teaching social studies, has shown untiring efforts and unselfish devotion to this school. We will long remember him for his sincerity, encouragement and friendship extended to us throughout our high school life. As we, the senior class of 1961, cross the bridge into the future, we will take with us an everlasting impression of greatness recognized in Mr. Osborne. 3 In Memory of Paul Nolan July 16, 1930 - December 3, 1960 So when a great man dies For years beyond our ken The light he leaves behind him lies Upon the paths of men. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow In Memory of Kenneth Moss August 31, 1941 - October 21, 1960 Green be the turf above thee, Friend of my better days! None knew thee but to love thee. None named thee, but to praise. O ' Loughlin The Student Council, governing organization of the student body, has as its main objectives service and leadership to the school. It is the only student organization in which students ' ideas are brought up and considered. The projects for the year 1960-1961 were: the traditional dance, The First Fall Fling, the sale of athletic passes for football and basketball games, the sale of Chenango Valley sweat shirts, and a safety program to aid students walking to and from school. A new function the Student Council is undertaking is the foreign exchange student program in cooperation with the Parent Teachers Association. The Student Council this year worked unceasingly towards a goal of good sportsmanship and leadership among students and administration under the supervision of their advisor, Mrs. Helen Henderson. The officers of the 1960-1961 Student Council were: Presi¬ dent, Robert Rose; Vice President, Charlotte Crayton; Secretary, Bonnie Blair; Assistant Secretary, Carol Wheeler; Treasurer, Richard Reece; Assistant Treasurer, Jack Cook; Delegates at Large, Judy Branick and Thomas Houser. 58 Warrior The Warrior staff, under the leadership of Mr. Charles Osborne, has worked diligently to complete the 1961 annual. Much of the credit for the completion of this year ' s book can be given to the editor-in-chief, Shirley Dunn. She has assumed the role as sole chief editor and the responsibilities of business and finances. Her right-hand assistant, Carla Lawson, literary editor, was in charge of all literary work on the yearbook. Other members of the staff were: Diane Brownlow, layout editor; Christine Lawrence, senior editor; Beverly Agard typing editor; and Junior editors, Judy Carkner, corresponding secretary; and Charlene Harris, Art editor. The art and commercial depart¬ ments and Photography Club have also helped a great deal in the yearbook ' s completion. All students working on the yearbook staff were given an opportunity to gain background and experience in journalism while performing a service to the school. They began layout work in the spring of 1960 and continued with articles and advertising in the fall. The yearbook is a pictorial view of all phases of education and life at Chenango Valley. Slagle Chenango Valley ' s 1960 football team ran into one of the most common problems that football teams face - injuries. The first of these injuries occurred before the first game and probably accounted for the let-down which our team suffered in its first game loss to Waterloo. The team rebounded, however, in its next two games to defeat Carthage and Eastwood in shutouts. In both games C.V. was the underdog to two of the toughest teams on its schedule. In the Owego game the team ' s injury jinx reached its peak when eight of the starting eleven players were struck down. The next two Saturdays the team bounced back with a resounding victory over Greene and a hard fought victory over Windsor. The following week, the Warriors could not cope with Sidney ' s undefeated powerhouse. At Homer on Veterans ' Day, C.V. fought hard only to lose a heartbreaker. The team ended the season with a 4-4 record, not a great one, but a good one considering the over- al I picture. 76 13-19 20 - 0 13- 0 7-26 48-18 13- 6 6-36 0 - 6 Waterloo Carthage Eastwood Owego Greene Windsor Sidney Homer Junior Varsity Football ROW ONE: Left to Right, R. Under the guidance of Mr. Newton, the future varsity players learned the fundamentals and plays which will help them in their future football years at C.V. The J.V. ' s poor record can be explained by the fact that most of the opposing teams were reinforced by varsity players. In their first game the Warriors hit hard and beat Greene ' s Trojans by a wide margin. The following game was against their traditional rival, Owego, and they came through with an important victory. The Warriors next made trips to Johnson City and Central and in each case extended their winning streak. The fifth victim was Union Endicott ' s highly rated team. Against undefeated Vestal, the team ran into shooting difficulties and fell in a hard fought battle. The Warriors rebounded to win the Sidney Christmas Tournament by defeating Cooperstown and host, Sidney. This was the second year in a row that Chenango Valley had won this tourna¬ ment. Dick Reece, the Warriors ' Co-Captain, set a tournament record by scoring 31 points against Cooperstown and was named most valuable player of the tournament. C.V. next swept over Norwich. The team ran into difficulties in the next three games. At Owego, the game went into sudden death overtime before the Warriors succumbed. The next loss was to Binghamton North and then for the second time this year, Vestal defeated C.V. The team bounded back, however, to de¬ feat Homer and a graduation-weakened North team. J.C 0 the hottest team in the Southern Tier at the end of the season, got the best of the Warriors in their next game. In the Sidney game, Dick Reece, one of the highest scorers in the Triple Cities, set a new school record by scoring 32 points. The Warriors soundly defeated U.E. and held them to 37 points.
