In preparing to disembark from the S. S. Chenango Valley we look back over this part of our voyage with many pleasant memories. The officers, our faculty, have added greatly not on ly to the educational value but also to the pleasure of our trip. They were always ready to help if the weather became stormy and have given us the inspiration by which we have chosen our future course. During the voyage, we have learned much from our association with our fellow passengers, the students. From their ideas and experiences we have increased our ability to deal with our own problems. We shall never forget the hours of fun and recreation we shared under the direction of our “so¬ cial directors”, those members of the faculty who led us in sports and other group activities. As we leave this ship we embark on an even larger one which will carry us through life. The knowledge and abilities gained on the S.S. Chenango Valley will help to determine the route and success of our greater voyage. To help us remember all the pleasant memories of our voyage we present the 1960 Warrior. z u •o J, J L. Officer of the Day t he senior class of 1960 takes great pride in dedicating its most valued possession, the Yearbook, to Mrs. Edith Holmwood. In our daily contact with her during our years at Chenango Valley, we have come to realize that through her tireless effort, warm heart and helping hands, she typifies the spirit of our Alma Mater. She has truly won the hearts of our entire student body. To us, Mrs 0 Holmwood has become a symbol of virtue and inspiration; an ideal towards which we shall ever strive. As we depart from Chenango Valley, we will always cherish the memories and daily associ¬ ations with one of our finest teachers and friends, Mrs. Holmwood, whom we all love. To you we dedicate this annual. 3 TIVI I’tJItSH i Board of Education Charles N. Brown George Bro wnlow John B. Other activities of the 1959-60 school year include the authorization and sale of athletic passes for football and basketball games, the establishing of a suggestion box for a campaign to improve Student Council and the school, the selling of Chenango Valley sweat shirts, and the sponsoring of a good sportsmanship poster contest. SENIOR The Senior High Dramatics Club, under the direction of Mrs. Barbara Comtek, was begun to give interested students a way to try their talents. This year they have had an excellent opportunity to do so. For the annual three-act play, they produced a farce called “A Little Honey”. In an as¬ sembly, the club did Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” which gave them experience of a different type. They also presented a one-act play for Civic Theater. Along with acting, the club receives some background in wardrobe, make-up, publicity, and other aspects involved in producing plays. JUNIOR The Junior Dramatics Club widen¬ ed its interests this year. Besides the usual activities of tryouts and rehearsals for the three-act play, “Home Sweet Homicide”, the club became interested in make-up tech¬ niques and was busy learning stage terms. At their weekly meetings, they discussed stage direction, and were given demonstrations in make¬ up appreciations. Along with the three-act play, the club, under the direction of Miss Audrey Lou Benn, presented a joint “Christmas Pa¬ geant” with the Junior and Senior Choruses. 60 Key Club ROW 1 (L. to R.): R. Mr. Durbin Coach The 1959 football season provided CV fans with plenty of excite¬ ment and fun. The Warriors defeated such teams as Homer, Water¬ loo, Owego, Wyluslng, Sidney, and Chenango Forks. Whitney Point and Windsor were the only two teams that managed to defeat our Warriors. Coaches Smyk and Durbin should be congratulated for turning out a team that played with great determination, enthusiasm, and good sportsmanship in all kinds of weather. 72 Junior Varsity Football CV’s Junior Varsity Football team had quite an Im¬ pressive season In 1959. Under Coaches Newton and Nolan, the team came through with a four-one rec¬ ord. The twenty-two man squad played such teams as Oxford, Harpursville, Susquehanna Valley, Wind¬ sor, and Whitney Point. It is Interesting to note that in the last two games the squad was reduced because several outstanding members were promoted to the varsity squad. ROW 1 (L. to R.): P. Rocks, B. Jackson, D. Meets were held at CV, Windsor, Greene, Vestal, and Cincinnatus, with the CV runners winning two first places. Es¬ pecially noteworthy is Mike Leonard, who received four individual trophies at these meets. Although U. E, won first place in the State meet, as a team, our Section 4 placed second in the same meet. Since there were only a few sen¬ iors on the team, Coach McDaniel pre¬ dicts an even more improved group next year. Some of the teams CV defeated were Binghamton North, Windsor, Greene, and Chenango Forks. 73 Varsity Basketball C.V. 53 U.E. 57 C.V. 70 Sidney 60 C.V. 40 Oneonta 64 C.V. 70 Norwich 53 C.V. 49 North 50 C.V. 64 Vestal 54 C.V. 46 U.E. 56 C.V. 54 J.C. 59 C.V. 47 Central 53 C.V. 75 Owego 59 C.V. 76 Norwich 33 C.V. 72 North 59 C.V. 75 Delhi 56 C.V. 86 Homer 50 C.V. 58 Vestal 68 C.V. 48 Greene 45 C.V. 59 J. Mr. Arthur Sharpsteen — Coach — Confronted with one of the strongest varsity schedules In Che¬ nango Valley ' s history, the hoopsters under the direction of Mr. Sharpsteen began the 1959-1960 basketball season with five straight losses. Duringthe Christmas holiday however, a tremendously In¬ spired team won the Sidney Holiday Tournament and then proceeded to compile a record of 9 wins out of the remainder 12 games. Con¬ tinuing In the sections, the Warriors were victorious over U.E. 70-53 and Johnson City 66-56. We may all be proud of our very fine club. Junior Varsity Basketball Every CV basketball fan, whether student or adult, is certainly very proud of this season’s exceptional Junior Varsity team. Coach Bob McDaniel must agree that this is the finest J. V 0 squad in CV history„ To the fans, at least, the 6:30 preliminary this year became almost as important as the 8:00 Varsity game. On Tuesday, February 9, the J.V. Warriors were handed their first defeat in 13 games by Owego, The record of wins over such schools as Union Endicott, Oneonta, Binghamton North, Binghamton Central, Vestal, Johnson City, and Homer is remarkable, and CV is very pleased with this fine group of boys u In com¬ pleting their season, the J. V. ’s won 16 and lost only two games, both to Owego. ROW 1 (L. to R,): D. Holcomb, B. Hardy, Mgr. J. Decker, D. Leaky, E. Krajca. ROW 2: B. Brown, D. Baker, G„ Campbell, Coach B 0 McDaniel, M. In competition against many of the long-established wrestling teams of the Southern Tier, the Warriors have given no¬ tice that CV is a team you don’t overlook. Especially noteworthy are the records of Doug Hall (106 lbs.) and Garry Hall (168 lbs.), who represented CV at the Section 4 Finals held at Cortland, and the seven lettermen around which the 1961 squad will be built. V.), Valentine (9th), and Osborne (7th and 8th) completed their 1959 season with a very respectable rec¬ ord of twenty-five wins, twelve losses, and one tie. Highlights of the past base¬ ball season included two undefeated teams—the J. V. ’s and the 7th and 8th grade team. From the performances of early tryouts, prediction indicate that the 1960 Baseball season will again prove very successful. One of CV’s sports teams composed of many seventh and eighth graders is our soccer team. Coached by Stanley Wil¬ son, the group of thirty-eight boys played such teams as West Junior, Maine, and Malne-Endwell. Their co- captalns were Shaffer, Leonard, and Harmes. Their seven game schedule ended with two ties, and four one-point losses. ROW 1 (L 0 to R„): M. Berg, D. Hubbard, K. Jagger, R. Snider, N. Montgomery, J. Marino, M. Satterthalte, R. Lewis. ROW 2: N. The season began with the Vestal relays and ended with the Zone meet at Cortland, in which CV placed first. Winners of the Section Four Meet were Dick Lampman and Ken Moss, who then went to the State Meet at Cornell Cortland, Windsor, Chenango Forks, Blue Ridge and Greene are only a few of the teams defeated by the CV runners c ROW 1 (L. to R.); D. In the third year of competition in the Triple Cities League, our volleyball team matched their skill against that of such teams as North High, Central, Johnson City, and Union Endi- cott. The twenty man team began the season with a 2-1 victory over Binghamton North, and ended the season with a 7-17 record. This earned them fourth place in the league. Their coach, Mr. Smyk, has given us a team tha t we can be proud of. 78 Cheerleaders MIDDLE: N. Miller. CLOCKWISE, FRONT LEFT: J. Ma¬ rino, S. Young, S. Weatherby, N. Shaver, M. Hathaway, J.
