i i s 5 2 2 E E 2 s 5 K 5 K f E E X 5 E Foreword Growing up is a series of experiences. Some of these experiences are gay and joyous, while others are sorrowful. No matter what experience you en- counter it includes a valuable lesson. Many of the experiences and lessons, that were instrumental in giving to us an adult view of life, took place in Chenango Valley High School. How much we appreciate our teachers, who were willing to go beyond the call of duty in giving us individual help in our difficult subjects and, more im- portant, in guiding our ideas and thoughts into productive and fruitful paths. The extra curricular activities in which we were engaged gave us an op- portunity to put into practice many of the theories we learned in the class- room. It was through these activities that we pursued our special interests and learned to follow a group leader of our own age and choice, and to co- operate with a group or committee, and offer leadership when given op- portunity. Last, but not least, is the school building proper. Our new school with its abundance of modern equipment certainly made a pleasant setting for the lessons we learned in high school. And now we wish to present the WARRIOR, a pictorial memorial of the many experiences we had during our years of training at Chenango Valley High School. The door of the past is fast closing on the old familiar world of childhood and high school. On the momentous night of June , 1958 the door will shut behind us forever. We shall be- V gin' our joumey into the world adulthood to face its joys and sorrows,to make our place known, to be- come theworld of tomorrow, to fulfill our destines as God shall guide us. It shall be only in fondest memories that we shall again see and feel Chenango Val1ey,the thrilling foot- ball games, the classes, the friends, the fun and hard times. and hear the strains of our alma mater being sung on graduation night. Here in this very first Warrior, the very first graduating class of Chenango Valley Junior-Senior High School has collected a few pictures to remind us of the past wonderful time we've spent here. Here is a yearbook we've collected a few remembrances for us to give to you who will someday take our places and to you whose places we shall take. I only hope you of the future graduating Classes will receive as much joy and satisfaction from creating your yearbook as we, the editors of the first Warrior, have had creating ours. It is with this thought that we leave you with our Warrior, your remembrances of the Class of 1958. God be always with you. The Editors 2 Q Q Past Board Members Paul Brooks Charles N. Brown James Buongiorne Wilbur G. Hill John Levonik Howard Meaker F. Wallace Potter Robert W. Smith Jerome Trudell Deceased: A1 C. Schmidt Our hearts go out in gratitude to those who have served on the Board of Education, past dt present, for we know that without their efforts the building of our new high school would have been impossible. The combination of energy, good judgment, and tact that these men have displayed have made the people of our community, proud to have had a part in an endeavor which would better educate the youth of to- day. The members of the Board know what the word sacrifice means, and yet, they carried their heavy burden without selfishness. We appreciate the time and energy they have spent in our behalf. The citizens of this area have been well represented by our Board of Education of the Chenango Valley School District. Our ,magnificent high school was conceived in the minds of these men, and, through their efforts, it was born. 4 Present Board Members I w W , 4 J C. Carlton Bebee Arthur Jennings Charles N. Brown President James Buongiorne C. Merrill Churchill Andrew Horney Frederick G. Leonard John Levonik Robert W. Smith 5 Administration Donald A. Grant, Principal My congratulations to the class of 1958 for this Warrior - the first of many fine yearbooks to come. In preparation of this book you have borne admirably a responsibility unique in school history, since you have published the first Warrior. It is to be hoped that, in the years to come, this book will serve as a means of reliving thehappy high school years of every Chenango Valley High School student. To those departing seniors, every wish for success and happiness in life is hereby offered. Do not forget the high ideals and the aggressive philosophy to which you subscribed as a member of your student body. Just as in the case of our athletic warriors, play the game of life to win, but play it fairly. Give it your best, and it will reward you in return. J. STUART RAYMOND JOHN TKACZOW HENRY R. In completing a four game schedule, the Junior Varsity won two and lost two games. The success of this teamis not always measured in wins or losses, but rather in the final analysis of forming the fundaments of Football. Many promising pros- pects were evident from among this squad, you'11 be seeing many of these boys challenging present vars - itymen for their positions. J. V. Basketball At the halfway mark the current basketball season, the Junior Warriors have proven their sportsmenship and determination as they have met ten opponents, defeating six while losing four contests. From their fighting spirit it is evident that the Varsity squad will be strengthened next year as members of the present team replace departing Varsity lettermen. Coach McDanie1s,G. Smith,A. This year, for the first time, C.V, fans were able to cheer to victory a complete Varsity team. Last year the newly organized Warriors had no Senior members. The team picked up valuable experience by trying their wings against various Junior Vars- ity teams. Because of their lack of real experience things did not always go smoothly, but the fighting Warrior spirit could not be bent for long, and was never broken. A loss only made them work harder, and resulted in the emergence of a most promising team. Under the excellent guidance of Coach Carl Newton and his assistant BILL WECKEL, a total of 3 wins and 3 losses was accomplished this year. Since C,V, 's field had not yet Coach Newton Coach Weckel the beginningg been completed, home games were played on Rappaport's field. It is not an easy task to build a winning team in such a short period of time, and we take off our hats to the boys and coaches for their fine record. This however, is only the beginning of the glorious, victorious Warriors to come. Throughout high school days at our basketball and football games, whether hopes were high or low, through our minds spring the peppy images of pretty girls dressed in red and grey , our cheerleaders. With enthusiastic and inspiring cheers they encouraged our WARRIORS through the hard times and the glad ones. Knowing that the kids are depending on him and rooting for him means a lot to a player. By directing the crowds in exciting cheers the cheerleaders were the main morale contributors to our WARRIORS, They were the ones who urged our WARRIORS on to their many glorious victories and gave our school the reputation of having fine school spirit. We extend a tribute to our girls in red and grey, the cheerleaders of Chenango Valley. 44 Varsity Basketball J. Civak, J. Newman, R. McGuire, E. Rog, T. Shramek, L. Hitchcock, C. Withers, M. Coach Sharpsteen As we go to press, our basketball Warriors, under the guidance of Mr. Sharpsteen, have completed the first half of a very strenuous schedule. So far they have established the very im- pressive record of seven wins againstonly three defeats. Along with this fine record has stood out the sportsmanship instilled within the squad. We are sure this team is the beginning of many promising basketball teams in the future. The WARRIOR, the Chenango Valley official yearbook, begins its activities in the early part of the school year. A large number of students are constantly engaged in preparing the copy, lay-out and photography of this publication. As the year advances, deadlines must be met and student groups arranged for picture taking. This year is the first year in which this yearbook is published. Much labor and thought has gone into making this first yearbook a success. Tl-IE QUILL, is CV CS literary medium for our boys and girls interested in writing poems, essays and short stories. Probably the most important organization in the school is the Student Coun- cil, since through it the students can take part in the running of the school. Each year the members of Student Council with the assistance of Mr. J. Tkaczow and Mrs. E. Robinson strive to promote harmonious relations throughout the entire school, provide a forum for student expression, and improve school morale. During the year Student Council has been unusually activein our own school and also in getting together with members of Stu- dent Councils of other schools. In the fall they participated in the Inter- scholastic Association of Student Councils and during the spring Student Council sent two delegates to the Annual Student Council Convention in Syracuse. Around our own school they met every other Tuesday to discuss the latest school problems. This year Student Council worked on a School Improvement Campaign and raised more money for the organ which is to be put in the auditorium. These are only a few of the many worthwhile activities of our Student Council which has served us faithfully during the year. As a result of these activities our high school days have been made increasingly more pleasant and inspiring. 61 V W flf' fAifJW, -' ' . , ,Y -f Q gf 4 W X Hx. , .
