THE wmmme HISTORY or us. After TARAWA the lucky ship and h A' C d Christmas, 1943, in San Die o. On Ne: U ' :OUP nie D ' 3 Years Day, hgw. ever, the training began again. Lessons learned at Tarawa must be practiced and profited by for the clLBEn'r-MAR- SHALLS Campaign coming up. From the 28th of January until the end of February CHENANGO planes and pilots sup. ported our landings at Roi-Namur in Kwajsuzm ATOLL and also at Eniwetok. The ship's luck still held! Close support at KWAJALEIN meant steaming in so close that the crew could see their pilots bombing the beaches during the dav time. At night, however, while cm-:NANGO was outside the crowded harbor at Kwajalein, where her sister ships were anchored, a .lap reprisal raid attempted to 'catch them napping. The crew cou d see ffames- shoot skyward from a Jap fuel dump on the beach as it was hit by .lap bombs and then watch the bombers wheel overhead at 1500 feet on their way home. When no bombs came crashing down on them, they knew she was a ship with her own private rabbit's foot. During .the PALAU strike, CI-IENANGO with her division pent a monotonous two weeks ff in combat 81 s . ' u' y g 'r patrols' and anti-submarine patrols to protect the fleet oilers and ammunition ships assembled to replenish the big carriers. She .even reverted to her old function as an oiler when she refueled the carriers uuwcuzr and Pnmcaron. On 4 April CHENANGO headed south to Espiritu Santo once more to traing this time for.the New Guinea Campaign. Landings at Aitape and at Hollandia were covered by planes from CHENANGCCS Carrier Division. On the moonlit night of 15 April, Cl-if-ZNANCO lay dead in the water all alone off the coast of New Guinea. Water in the fuel had doused the fires under her boilers. She was a sitting duck! While her engineers worked feverishly to get steam up again the rest of the crew scrambled topside and gazed, fascinated at the moonpath, waiting for a periscope to break the surface . . . expecting to sight a torpedo wake. The engineers won the race against cooling boilers, got her oing again. She was there when the landings were made! liowever, little opposi- tion was encountered, and, after fiying routine patrols, the ship returned to Espiritu Santo and set her Air Group ashore. For ten days, or until 25 May, CVHENANC0 planes and pilots trained at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, where, a year previous, planes and pilots from CHBNANGO,S. first Air Group, Tw!-:NTY-EIGHT, had gone ashore and helped hold the Solo- mons against the Japs. lt was a different field from the bomb-cratered, constantly harassed Henderson of a year ago: it was a different war. We were mounting offensives this year and CHENANGO was in training for the MARIANAS lnvasionl At Eniwetok on 2 June the carrier division picked up the troop transports and support gunfire ships and setsail for Guam. This was not the monotonous routine affair that the past two campaigns had been. The .laps reacted vio- lently, staging frequent and determined raids down from the Bonins to the north. ' I ' On 21 June a low-flying enemy bomber attemptingtp sneak into the formation was shot down by a fighter divx- sion from CHENANGO. And at dawn on next day, 22 June, CHENANGO mounted a one-ship offensive of her own on PAGAN Island which the .laps were'USil1K 10 Stage fafdefs down from the north for attacks on our shipping at Saipan. All alone she steamed near the island, launched her .entire Air Group of 32 lanes on a strike which severely crippled the airfield installations, shot up gun positions and per- sonnel at Pagan. ln addition, the strike sank four loaded supply ships, damaged several others and hammered the S IJHENANISIJ, c.v.E. 128CCuntinuedJ harbor facilities. Despite heavy anti-aircraft opposition, all CHENANGO planes returned intact. Suddenly, just as all but two fighters on patrol had come aboard, a .lap Betty which had apparently followed them home, tried to close on the ship. lt was shot down by the patrol fighters amid the usual spectacular fiames and in full view of the ship. Lucky Lady had survived two busy dangerous daysg her crew .fe-it that the 21st of .lune could be called the longest day of the year only if you hadn't lived through the 22nd of June. ' During the last 15 days of July CHBNANGO pilots Hew 364 sorties against the enemy on Guam. Strafing, bombing, photographing, and supporting the landings kept every pilot and air-crewmen busy and earned them 32 medals and commendations. They dropped 74 tons of bombs, destroying many gun' emplacements, troop concentrations, bridges, truck- convoys and at least one desperately-needed enem am- munition dump which exploded with spectacular violence. Also four ship's photographers were given commendations for their excellent, speedy work in delivering to the flag- ship photographs which showed the beach-heads to be too difficult for successful attack. . H Right at the end of the Marianas Campai a signal honor came to the lucky ship. On the 30th of Jul? at four in the afternoon, a Cl-IENANGO pilot, Lt.fj J Terrar, was ordered to try landing at Orote Airfield on Guam. He completed his mission successfully, reported that the field was operational for all but very heavily loaded planes, and by' this act be-' came the first American' pilot ever to land and take-oi' from the island of Guam . . . the first United States soil.in the Pacific to be re-captured! ' After a month. of rest, recreation and training, mostly training, at Seaddler Harbor Clilanusl in the Admiralties, CHENABJGO sortied with her division on 10 September and covered the capture of Morotai Island during 15 to 24 Se temher. Air action in this operation consisted principally of fighter sweeps to neutralize enemy airfields in the sur- rounding Halmaheras. Many parked aircraft, barracks ,and airfield installations were destroyed. CHENANGO planes par- ticipated in one of the thrilling rescue actions of the war during this operation. . A fighter pilot from a neighboring carrier had been shot, down over Wasile Bay. He parachuted safely but was drift-' ing dange'rously.close to the enemy-held coast. Although enemy AA Batteries held them under continuous Ere, and had already downed two fighters from a neighboring ship, CHI-ZNANGO planes repeatedly strafed Jap boats attempting to capture the downed pilot. Because of this determined covering action the heroic crew of a PT boat was able to drive their craft in at high speed and rescue the ffyer from under the .lap shore batteries. ' Air Group 'rmR'rY-Fm: and U.s.s. cmznsnco were a .team of seasoned veterans by the beginning of the Leyte Cam- paign for the Philippines. Commanding this formidable combat team was Captain fnow Commodorel George Van Duers, who took command at'Manus 13 August, 1944. The Air Group had been aboard a year and two days when the,- invasion fieet approached Leyte Gulf on 16 October. But before the veteran team could close with the laps it had. to face a tvphoon: 85 knot winds and towering waves which lashed tip over CHENANc0's flight deck 60 feet above the water! !! Fortwo days the ship stood up under the punish-' ment of the storm. Her crew was appaled when they MW planes being catapulted on the 18th while the waves were still running so high that planes' wheels occasionally A fConlinued on page 291 Page 25
