CHENANGO were sweating in whites in the ofiicial commissioning ceremony. During the next 38 months in the Pacific, in steadily dwindling num- bers, the 'jilank'owners have often recalled that day amid business-as-usual in the war zone. - Back on 19 September, 1942, most of us foolishly ex- pected to see some champagne fly-when' the CHENANCO was commissioned an aircraft carrier. But there wasn't any. That's for launchings, not commissionings, theysaid. Down at the Erie Basin, the crowd on the flight deck pretty much resembled an inspection. Embryo division ofiicers were tidy- ing up boot seamen, and the electricians were trying to get the howls out of the loudspeakers. Below in the hangar deck, actress Madeleine Carroll was being paraded along with other guests. In the first division gear locker the boys were electing Madeleine the girl they'd best like to stand an anchor watch with. ' Captain Ben H. Wyatt, the carrier's first commanding officer, informed us we were about 'to witness the first Navy commissioning conducted in a private navy yard. Orders were read, salutes were exchanged, short speeches were heard, a pennant was hoisted, and before you knew it Pedro Silva, CBM, had- sounded his silver pipe into the speaker system. The watch was setg'we were in commission! The procedure went smoothly and smartly.-The slight ruffle of confusion in the back row of the visiting band was quickly calmed. A small boy had crumpled in a faint under the tension of the ceremony and the weight of his tuba, but a Ph.M whisked him away quietly and the ceremony con- tinued. I ' I The ship's company and guests were served a handsome commissioning dinner in the crew's mess, the CPO mess and the wardroom mess following the exercise. Passed out at dinner were printedpostal cards, suitable for mailing home, which announced briefly that the CHENANCO had been put in commission' and told what we had for dinner. Remember? . ' ! I S '. Here is In account of eight children in the Holt family from Missouri who are really showing their loyalty to the country and the cause of justice and right. CHBNANGO is proud to have aboard one of these eight children and we think this is the record aboard ship. Here arerthe service records of Malcolm H. Holt, one of our barbers, his six brothers and one sister. Malcolm took his Naval Training at Great Lakes. He was then sent to pier 92 at New York where he came aboard the U.s.s. Cl'lENANCO'8l Staten Island three days before she was commissioned as an aircraft carrier, 16 September, 1942. Albert Z., 31, is the oldest of the Holt family in the armed forces. He .began his training in the Army at Camp Hood, Texas, was assigned to General Patton's 3rd Army and was wounded in France. ' Harry E., the next son, is in the Army Air Force. He took his training at Amarillo, Texas, and is now riding a B-29. .lack D. chose the Marines, just to be different. He started his training at San Diego, Califomia, and is now: with the Fifth Division on Iwo Jima. James W. didn't like the Navy, couldn't see tramping with the Army, nor could be understand the Leathernecks, so he joined the Merchant Marines and is now serving on it ship in the Paciic. - I , Roy Ei, with his twin sister, Frances M., chose the Navy, along with two other brothers. Roy took his basic at Far- ragut, ldaho, and is now stationed at the Oakland Naval Hospital. , U' , I Frances, the only girl in the family of ten boys, is a former student at Southeast Missouri State Teacher's Col- lege. Living in a world of men she felt impelled td join the WAVES to do her bit toward winning the war. She took her training at Hunters CoIlege'and is now stationed at Mare Island, Califomia. .
