Although a reluctant anchor windlass made prospects appear doubtful for a while, overtime efforts by the crew and a providential steam chest from USS PLATTE at length enabled us to head for Japanese waters. Okinawa was our first taste of northern liberty, and the pleasures of four little villages on the waj- to Naha raised everyone ' s expecta- tions of what was to come. n.Jl.. The leader of the Norwegian missionary group who run the hospital greets the CHEMUNG men. Kao-Hsiung afforded one special opportunity to meet the Chinese people--a visit to the Children ' s Hospital at Ping Tung. The occasion was Chinese New Year, and the sailors brought toys and games to the patients as part of Project Handclasp. There followed several songs from both sides, including Old MacDonald in Chinese and a bi-lingual rendition of Silent Night. Don ' t be afraid.
