Flounders did more than found a high school in X884 in Cheltenham Township - he added a new part to the community machinery, propelling it forward into the modern age. Changes were evident across the township as Beaver College's Grey Towers were built, to remain a landmark even today. The Elkins Park Railroad Station opened up the area with modern transportation. Cheltenham's John Wanamaker, famous for his department store, was made President Benjamin Harrison's Postmaster General, while Ezra Pound the controversial poet, and john Luther Long, the author of the Madame Butterfly tale, were growing up in Wyncote, literary figures in the making. 3 4 f. Q 'C f i Q ee ar America embarked on her second century with the construction of the Washington Monument and the Statue of Liberty. Grover Cleveland served as president once in the '8o,s and once in the '9o's. Politically, the nation was saddled with the Pullman Strike and the Spanish-American War. Teens were overjoyed with the introduction of roller skates, and mothers were relieved when evaporated milk came to markets. The Metropolitan Opera opened, and Vaudeville gave smiles, while Edison's motion pictures forever changed the meaning of the word 'entertainmentf . - sity, . Nm. 5 - 5 n Wh, 1? X. , at r. Teddy V Roosevelt settled the United Mine Workers strike and dug D A3ZVI:gz his way across the Isthmus of Panama as Americans took to 'iis the road in Henry Forcl's Model T's. Woodrow Wilson's m idea for the League of Nations earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, and Marconi revolutionized communications with transatlantic radio messages. YOU? Breyer's house Qnow the Cheltenham Township Buildingj was built, historic Lucretia Mott's house was demolished to make room for Latham Park. The shift from old to new was mirrored in the construction of a new high school on a site at the corner of Montgomery Avenue and High School Road. Wharton Barker of Wyncote became the first and only township resident to run for the Presidency when he was on the ballot as the Fusion Populist candidate in 19oo. 1.2 ..,-. H., The I920,S and I93O,S brought new difficulties, and Americans longed to escape. The outbreak of the Second World War was the final straw in an era that witnessed the institution of Prohibition and the crash of the stock market. American's escaped depression by cheering for Jesse Owens and Babe Ruth while Mickey Mouse and the Oscars were born in Hollywood. John Scopes divided the educators with his Darwinian teaching, but Charles Lindbergh brought the world closer together with the first Trans-Atlantic flight. 1929 - 1939 4. Cheltenham was the first of the suburban school districts to remove children from their mothers' apron strings with the insti- tution of a kindergarten program in 1922. The older students benefitted from the construction of the Myers Elementary School and the inclusion of industrial arts to the curriculum. The roaring 20,5 rushed into Cheltenham on the heels of such luminaries as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis who hobnobbed with George H. Lorimer, the editor of the Saturday Evening Post, who resided in Cheltenham, and in 1936 President Hoover visited with Lorimer, the second of two visits to the Cheltenham home, .,,,....-f--'lirmapvvwivkl .W . .---'- Y ' ' H..- K Y ,p--- ' A-..,,,,, V. EL DELATCDR This yearbook is devoted to history - the history of a school, of the people who shaped it, and of the society that surrounded it. Cheltenham High School's history is not merely the story of a school's first century. Cheltenham graduates leave, taking their knowledge with them to the rest of the world, and thus our history becomes but a sub-plot in the story of the world. As life has changed, people's clothing, mannerisms, and speech have metamorphosed correspondingly. Cheltenham has flowed with these changes, forever flexibly riding the current, but never floating away from it's founder's goal: to kindle ambition and sponsor growth, two qualities that have shaped the world. The history of the world is the most significant tale ever written, and the one hundred years that CHS has witnessed have been an exciting chapter in this never-ending chronicle. With leaps and bounds Cheltenham has progressed as society has developed, and with continued growth Cheltenham High School can look forward to inclusion as a character in this world drama for years to come. ZAMSKY STUDIOS 95 to Mr. Joseph Simms, who, after 2I years as sponsor of the E1 Delator, has finally decided to hang up his yearbook shoes with the publication of the Centennial yearbook. As sponsor he has brought both evolutionary and revolutionary changes to the El Delator: the Life! Look layout, the use of extensive color and special effectsg the two-volume concept, the giant IOXI3 yearbook, to name just a few. But as sponsor, Mr. Simms has presented many sides of a unique personality to each and every staff: . . . A merry monarch reigning over a productive staff or a tyrant toiling over a recalcitrant oneg . . . A conservative in some matters but a liberal in others f Yearbooks are conceived, designed and produced by students for studentslvjg . . . A democrat in staff development f The more underclassmen, the better. Q but a republican on fiscal matters Qult is not financially possible, the answer is NOQ, . . . A fire breather when unmet deadlines occur, but a pushover where animals are concerned fpictured here with Bright Eyesj An enigma? A leopard of changing spots? A chameleon? Whatever the label, Mr. Simms will always be uniquely MR. YEARBOCK. We, and past staffs, thank him for his devotion to El Delator, and to recording and interpreting the life and times of Cheltenham High School. While the Spanish-American War blotted foreign affairs, students at the young C.H.S. cleaned up their writing with the invention of the fountain pen. Americans' mouths grew accustomed to dribble as the ,QO,S brought the first basketball game. 2 Q.. 1 900,S- 1 9 I o,s American military troops joined forces in Europe as the US. entered World War I. At home, Boy and Girl Scout troops were organized. Mothers were blessed with the invention of the electric washing ma- chines and the establishment of lVlother's Day as a national holiday. This book, the Centennial edition of El Delator, was done solely in the hopes of successfully capturing the essence of our four-year term and was actually designed for student consumption. The theme was thrust upon us with the onslaught of Centennial feverf' but the direction we headed with the KIOO yearsn theme was intended to involve you in a memorable experience. The waiting outside the teachers' lounge, the wearing of outfits Goodwill refused to accept, and the posturing before the camera's eye was well worth it all, as the book has impressed upon me the veritable constancy of humanity: as someone once said, the more things change, the more they stay the samefy The truth of this quote has been proven to me in many ways, and despite the multitude of change, people remain basically the same falthough 'bangs went out with Mamie Eisenhow- erlj. In closing I leave a few thoughts that have been rumbling around my brain: you can't always succeed, but you don't always failg if it's not under your control don't worry about it, and if you need help ask, because very few people are mind readers. These ideas echo about in the hollows of my mind, and sometimes they actually surface at opportune moments. If they could help someone by enabling him to keep his perspective on a situation, then my years at Cheltenham will have been well spent. Have a good life.
