For the past thirty-five years Mr. Weston has contributed his wisdom and insight to this purpose in his association with 'the students of Cheltenham. His devotion to education has tran- scended the classroom. Until l958, Mr. Weston contributed generously of his time and skill to sponsoring El Delator. Those who worked with him found him unfailingly helpful. We of the Class of 1959 wish to honor Mr. Weston and to extend to him every good wish for the future. With sincerity and affection, we dedicate this yearbook to Albert E. Weston, teacher and friend. Ig- -.L .59 o 333 R W .QI 4. . -'Nr MR. ALBERT E. WESTON 5 faX X X '- .. Councilites began the year by voting the proceeds from a football game to help rebuild the damaged high school in Clinton, Tennessee. Interest in the new high school building ran high, and Council members set a goal of one thousand dollars for a library fund. Their money- making projects included the student show- ing of Alexander the Great and the sale of paperback books. Guided by its able sponsor, Mr. Joseph Guarneri, the Council helped plan the third annual JAC Dance, furthering inter-school relations and gaining money for a scholar- ship fund. Homerooms hustled to collect for the Council's carefully planned charity drives. The spring found the group or- ganizing the successful spaghetti dinner and the annual Cheltenham Hi-Day Bazaar. ggi ' Shldeni Council Officers: Sandy Jacobs, Didi Adshead, Sponsor Mr. Guar- neri, Chrissu Brickmon, Jirnmy Rosenthal. 22 Let's have u little action, eh what? .f' ' l One lost question Student Council ot work ij! 4 . They were fortunate to have the assistance of a capable art and make-up staff. Although photography had its headaches early in the season, things soon be- gan to develop. The untiring efforts of our writing staff in a job that is particularly tedious are commend- able. Lastly, considerable credit is due the typists for the hours of work they have put toward the completion of their phase of the book. This year's El Delator has not ad- hered to any formal delineation of theme, but rather has attempted to present its material in a manner both pleasing and eye-catching. -l 4. , Make-up Editor Klein, Editor-in-Chief Hertzfeld, Associate Editor Golden EI Delator Staff. Subiects of heated discussion included recognition of Red China, Pakistan's politi- cal position, work camps, the technological culture lag in Afghanistan, and pacifism. Members attended forums of high school students to exchange ideas and opinions within a broader sphere. The club's activities culminated in a trip to the model U.N. Assembly. Under the direction of coaches Joe Neiman and Chuck Mehelick, several boys played their last games for CHS. Included were Bob Eddowes, John Ewing, Skip McMinn, Dave White, Ron Goldenberg, Tom Madorno, and Marlow Spencer. Man- agers were Joe Scott and Jay Slipakoff. Behind Holden Award winner Bob Eddowes, seasonal leader in scoring, rushing, and pass receiving, the Panthers staged two upset attempts toward the season's end. Stag- ing a terrific first half battle, they forged ahead of the highly favored Norristown squad. A freak catch, giving the Eagles a two TD lead, cracked Cheltenham's hopes for an upset. The following week, two Eddowes' touch- downs could not overcome an early Lower Merion lead, but the CHS rally amazed the partisan onlookers. Trophy winner Paul Laumer led the uphill fight against Abington in the annual Old York classic, but the powerful Ghosts proved too much for the brave Cheltenhamites. The great number of returning lettermen, coupled with a much improved JV squad, enables Chelts to look at the fall 1959 season with great optimism. Coached by Mr. Paul LaMorgia, the Cheltenham foot- men rolled through a rugged fifteen-game schedule to give Cheltenham its first winning soccer team. The locals, with a powerful forward line spearheaded by All-Suburban Andy Siegel, Dave Spector, and Steve Spector, crushed their first two foes with a record ten goals. Great de- fensive work preserved consecutive l-O victories over un- defeated Ridley Township and Haverford to vault the Panthers into first place. Upper Darby finally broke through the rigid Cheltenham defense to knock the Chelts from the undefeated column. Lower Merion also proved a little too much for the boaters by defeating the Blue and Gold squad by a narrow margin. The season ended with a commendable 7-5-3 record. After a 35-25 defeat by Up- per Darby, the tracksters knocked off Lower Merion for the first time in eight years. The cindermen slipped after this brilliant victory, falling to Haverford, Chester, and Abington by wide margins. After downing Harriton, 23- 38, the harriers dropped two more decisions. With Bald- erson taking two first places, the tracksters ended their season strongly with triumphs over Plymouth - Whitemarsh and Upper Dublin to compile a respectable record. U Hockey Team. Betsy Brown as captain drew the team together and boosted the morale tremendously. The girls learned through the untiring efforts of Miss Redford, the coach, that winning games is not the most important thing, but that good sportsmanship is the goal toward which to work. This attribute was displayed by our Pantherettes. Varsity letter winners were Spencer, Scott, Pollack, Rosewater, Kohn, Mills, Merriam, Keill, Brown, Tetlow, and Goldman. A struggle to the finish Who is the winner? Girls' Basketball Under the leadership of co-cap- tains Carolyn Scott and Mary Somer- set, this year's girls' basketball team posted a seven-two record, losing only to Upper Darby and Haverford. The season was culminated in victory by the exciting game with Abington which the girls won by one point. Assisting the captains were Robinson, Good, and Leopold on the offensive and Goldman, Keill and Hitchcock on the defensive. Top-notch coach- ing was provided by Miss Boyd. 5 i 1 . Swish? The outstanding play of other starters- Larry Weiner, Mike Risen, Mark Weiss, and Eric Blum-was outshone only by Koerner's prolific scoring. This gave Cheltenham a well-rounded attack that battled past tough competition to chalk up an unexpected 11-11 record. Koerner, singularly Chelten- ham's best basketball attribute, literally re- wrote the record book, while hitting a sea- sonal total of 431 points. After hard-earned triumphs over Upper Dublin, Dobbins, and Abington, the Panthers exploded to romp over Harriton, 68-24. The contest featured the most fantastic first quarter in Cheltenham history with Koerner clicking for 15 and the Locals forging ahead 31-2. The cagers went on to es- tablish a very impressive home record, but could only gain three league victories on the road. The season's most aggravating game saw Ridley Township overcome a Cheltenham lead. The crucial one-point defeat gave the Blue and Gold a losing 8-10 league record. Slim margins held true in the squad's only defeats against public league leaders, Central and North- east. The team's leading bowler, Pete Frank, bowled a tremendous 258, 256 in two consecutive games in the Philadelphia Singles Championships. The impressive individual performances of medium weights Rick Grabfelder, Bill Lukens, and co-captain Bob Magill failed to overcome the inexperience penetrating the other weight classifications. Although short on victories, the wrestling team provided plenty of thrills for CHS rooters. In the year's second meet, the grapplers trailed by i6 points going to the last three matches. Co-captain Skip MacMinn, Mitch Budman, and Dave White then proceeded to do the impossible, pin their opponents to gain a dramatic tie. Wrestling Team. Embarking on a rugged 18-game schedule, the Panthers held high hopes for capturing the league championship. Seniors Bob Eddowes and Glen Tobias formed the nucleus of a superb pitching staff. Matched with the powerful hitting of infielders Ted Koerner, Skip MacMinn, and Bob Moses and outfielders Paul Laumer and Steve Hulshizer, the CHS nine proved a formidable opponent to many teams. John Ewing, Joe Wiedler, Ron Bennett, Rick Gusdorf, Lou Ciocca, Jerry Haberland, Jay Levy and Arnie Rosen- thal also contributed to Coach Mehelich's successful squad. Dead end Baseball Team. Go West, young man, said Greeley, and off went thirty iuniors to Wyandotte, Michigan. The exchangees played host to Michigan-ites too and gained new friends for their whole class. Especially important to the iuniors were the fast- rising buildings of the new Cheltenham High and the realization that their Class of '6O would be the first to graduate from the new school. Those years were filled with hard work, a multi- tude of brand new experiences, and many simply wonderful times! From the first coke party as sophomores to the Commencement Dance, senior social life has played a large part in their stay. Energetically sponsored by Mr. Robert Cunningham and Mr. David Harr, the seniors elected three sets of class officers, and members of the class have taken part in every school activity, from sports to Interfaith groups, from work on the Cheltonian to planning the Panther Parties, from committees to special seminars. They experienced weekly schedules that shift from Monday to Tuesday and have gone through six sets of final exams to- gether. Now, at Commencement they can say We've made it! and truly add, lt's been wonderful. Sponsor Mr. Harr ,- px X.
