-ami..--1 -+1-'---s EL DELATQR Cheltenham High School Elkins Park, Pennsylvania Foreword , Q 9 This book is the story of a year at Cheltenham l'-lighg a year of social, edu- cational, and athletic events, a year of thinking and learning and living to- gether. As we have pledged our allegi- ance to the flag at the start of each day, so now at the beginning of this book do we, the students of Cheltenham High School, renew our pledge to our school in the hope that as we go on to our farflung pursuits we shall serve our country and bring honor to our alma mater. Dedication The graduating class of i954 dedicates this El Delotor to Dr. Frank C. Ketler, our retiring su- perintendent of schools, in recog- nition of his outstanding work toward the growth and achieve- ments of the Cheltenham Town- ship school system. We feel that he is, in a large measure, respon- sible for the excellent educa- tional opportunities at our command. Dr. Frank C. Ketler To the Class of 1954: I am glad to have an opportunity to write you this message of appreciation and farewell, for I deeply appreciate the honor of having this issue of the El Delator dedicated to me. I know that by the time it comes out in print both you and I will be completing our years in the Cheltenham Schools. It has been my privilege to witness the graduation from Cheltenham High School of nearly forty-five hundred fine young people during the past twenty- two years, and I have been proud of the fine record they have made, as I know I shall be proud of yours. However, I feel a special kinship to the Class of l954, for we are going out together. This is my class, and I shall always have for it a special affection and pride. I wish for you, in the years that lie ahead, every good thing in the way of health, happiness, and success. Good-bye, and good Iuckl Scenes Around School A Usual Sight Gymnasium By the light of the moon or shining sun, Cheltenham casts its shadow of knowledge on all who enter. A scene of beauty and utility surrounds this seat of learning. Besides the scenes pictured the recently constructed tennis courts and green-hued athletic fields allow eager youth to express their energy and sportsmanship. ll I! I Industrial Arts Building l A Delightful View ff Elkins Pork Junior High School Our Alm X o Mater A New School Year Begins A note of summer lingered in the thoughts and hearts ot students as they opened the doors of Cheltenham High on a new school year. Wide-eyed with hope and anticipa- tion, neophites tried in vain to find their way and reach the right classrooms within the tour minutes allotted to them. Anxious to do right, they lis- tened intently, along with juniors and seniors, to words of advice and welcome from our principal, Dr. Lloyd VV. Ashby, assistant principal, Mr. Wilbur Leh- man, and Student Council president, John Whiteley. The Gro nd Opening Experienced upperclassmen groaned and cheered in turn at their newly-is- sued schedules ond diverse instructions. Bee-like conversation echoed through the halls as students renewed triend- ships and compared their summer expe- riences. Finally the tirst school day came to an end, leaving every student looking forward to a successful and happy year, filled with unforgettable experiences, good marks, and new friendships. ...vw- A , H CHS Traffic ,p5.,,,. ..,'..., V, . , f I A I kim '- In 4 -vi- ffd-5, V'-fh,vNq. -lv, 'rr 4 ns- Q1 -, .5 . fy A s A nr. Students in the typing classes do a great service to the school through their typing of the Cheltonion and the yearbook and their secretarial work in the various offices. ln addition, something new has been added. Now students in the Commercial Course, and some from other courses, are able to get work experience during the afternoon in iobs supplied by local employers. Students learn by doing, and also earn money in this new departure, which is directed by Mrs Franklin Gill. 3 1 J I 'J S.. 2fff3r: The Fiscal Year Stitching Time 1 Meddling in Metal General l6 -1 The General Course at Cheltenham offers a liberal baclcground in a wide variety of subjects to those students whose needs are not satisfied by other courses. A basic foundation in mathematics, science English and social studies enables graduates of the General Course to enter the world adequately equipped to face practically any situation that arises, Special emphasis is attached to the elective part ofthe General program, allowing students in this course to branch out into various fields where their abilities mav lie. Good preparation is presented in the areas of typing, shop, music, speech business, and art. Students are required to study in such fields as physical trainf ing, health, modern living! biology, and, for the girls homef making, These classes help to insure the personal wellebeing of the General student in later life. Courses like practical math and practical science enable the General student to Cope with the common problems that crop up in every day living. The General Course gives individuals who have no particular academic bent the necessary solid background upon which to build a happy, productive lifetime. lt enables those students who have not decided on a life career to sample diverse spheres and so to find for themselves that field of endeavor in which they will be most successful. One of Cheltenham's most outstand- ing courses is the curriculum offered by the Industrial Arts Department, uniaue in the number of courses offered, the facilities, and some of the special fields Housed in the beautiful modern building on our campus is a world of its own, for here four men teachers reign supreme, offering their talents to the students. The art course of Mr. l-loopes gives Cheltenham students a chance to learn jewelry-making and gem-grinding, two subjects rarely offered in public high schools. Along with these, drawing and sculptoring are taught, besides com- mercial art. Mr. McCormiclc's mechanical draw- ing room is a fascinating place, for here one can see student projects such as model houses and original blueprints. Mechanical drawing may be taken as a major, for the extensive course also covers tracing and printing, besides posters and testimonials. Metal shop students, under the direc- tion of Mr. Acker, learn to work with all types of metals and dies, while Mr. Kunkle's wood shop pupils are taught the manipulations of machinery for projects in wood. Holding to tradition, the Sophomore party, of October lo, had a well-balanced assortment of booths, games, and dancing. Achievements for the year included the annual Sophomore issue of the Cheltonian, and a study of improvements for homeroom visits to the incoming sophomore classes. The successful, lucra- tive handling of the identification pictures headed the list of fund-raising projects. The Class of '56 will be noted for its terrific display of school spirit and for great work in extracurricular activities. F2 ' . It has been headed bvcapable officers: Bob Shaw, President, Ann l-leirnerdinger, Vice President, Barbara Gillies, Secretary, and Gail Gordon, Treasurer. These people have given impetus to the varied projects of the Class of '55 The outstanding event of the year was the Junior-Senior Reception, where Juniors and their guests, the Seniors, danced to heavenly music in ci Parisian, Moulin Rouge-type setting, Other fea- tures for the year included a continua- tion of the stationery sale, a Junior issue of the Cheltonion, and a career day designed to give the students an insight into future vocational possibili- ties. Cheltenham presents an extensive club program to interest students in new activities or to cultivate old ones, under expert direction. One hour a week, students get together to learn more about their particular fields of interest. They have a choice of sports, music, dancing, administration, drama, art, nature, crafts, science, and spe- cialty clubs. The program is capably administered by Mr. F. Robert Samuels, who continues to do an outstanding job. Typical of Cheltenham's diverse pro- gram are the Football, Modern Dance, and Fixit Clubs. The Football Club, sponsored by Mr. Joseph Neiman, teaches boys to better understand rules, regulations, and different formations of this popular sport. Miss Adele Boyd, new addition to the CHS faculty, spon- sors a girls' Dance Club, whose mem- bers learn modern dancing under the leadership of Margo Kaliner. The long-awaited scoreboard was installed in the gym through the organization's efforts, while homerooms, under Council's su- pervision, sponsored such projects as the lunch wagon at football games, Tag Day, and the Turn-About Dance. The organization's committee system was a prime factor in maintaining order around CHS. The Social and Assembly com- mittees provided entertainment, while cleanliness was supervised by the Lunchroom and Property committees. The l-lomeroom Committee kept homeroom spirit ata new high, andthe attractive decorating of the Bulletin Board Committee was really commend- able. Discipline onthe stairs, enforced by the Safety Committee, gave CHS many reasons to praise Student Council throughout the year. Each year, the group selects and schedules three programs featuring professional talent. They also assist in planning other programs, such as talent shows, sports demonstrations, and student skits. The first specified program presented this year was the daring performance of Mr. Robert Terry, champion archer, Mr. Terry has devoted his life to archery and at one time worked for the film industry in Hollywood. The second program was an amazing liquid air demonstration by Mr. John Sloan, a former science teacher, who spent many years of his life in research and experimentation with liquid air. He presented a thoroughly enjoyable program. Last but not least on the agenda was Pruth McFarlin, a radio and concert tenor with soul and character in his voice. He was accompanied by Sarah Hendrick, distinguished pianist and com- poser. In spite of the severe crippling of his lower limbs from infantile paralysis years ago, he was determined to let nothing keep him from becoming a top flight singer, Mr. McFarlin gave a truly inspiring performance. Mindful of its obligations, the Cheltonian, bi-weekly journal of Cheltenham High, has given to its subscribers a fair and accurate description of all student activities, and also information on pertinent outside enterprises. The goals of good journalism have been continually emphasized by the CheItonian's sponsor, Miss Juanita M. Downes. Under the student leadership of George Broder, editor-in-chief, Cheltenham's Fourth Estate has produced a paper that is ac- claimed by the student body itself, and given the highest rating by national press organizations. After carefully considering the qual- ifications of eighty applicants, Mr. Weston, with faculty aid, chose the Yearbook Club members. These stu- dents met in committees to handle as- signments on sports, activities, art, personals, and school life. Then the work began. A theme was evolved, a giant plan took shape, and, like a jig-saw puzzle, all parts finally fit together into the product you are now reading. Abing- ton acted as host, maintaining the good relationships among the three schools. Following the traditional Abington- Cheltenham football game, students of both schools celebrated the closing of the gridiron season at the annual foot- ball dance, The Starlighters presented a variety of music for the entertainment of all, The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Dottie Jones as this year's football queen. The vacation gaieties were intro- duced by the Christmas Dance, the serenaders providing swing and sway for the happy crowd of dancers. A fea- ture of this event was the enthusiastic singing of Christmas carols during in- termission. After the headaches of mid-year ex- aminations had passed, the Senior Q Q' Prom, held on January 30, renewed the school's social activities. The Under- water Paradise theme provided an evening long to be remembered, The Moonlighters made the evening com- plete with harmonious music. The girls had their chance to pick a partner for the annual Turnabout Dance on February 27. Concluding the winter social season came the sparkling Junior-Senior Re- ception, an annual event that keeps its appeal throughout the years. Finally, the Plaza Dance in May added to the prevalent spring fever as couples danced beneath the stars. A feature of this year's program has been trips of educational interest to places both near and distant. The United Nations Headquarters, indus- trial plants, museums, model congress, and the local polls were all sought out by groups of Cheltenham's exploring students, 141. Saltzman Football The l953 Panther football team compiled a fine 6-3 record but was unable to stop unbeaten Abington in the annual classic. Back Larry Frank was named to the second All Scholastic team. Don Holmes and Joe Kelly won honorable mention. Kelly was chosen for sportsmanship and out-standing play as the first recipient ofthe Jack Holden Memorial Trophy. Scoring power was exhibited in a 34-O win over Dobbins and a 35-l3 victory over Upper Merion, Penn Charter, Radnor, Upper Darby, and Chester all fell before the local eleven, but the slick offense of Abington dealt out four game-winning TD's. The 4 Q if .fs Panthers were unbeatable on the road but lost all three games at Elkins Park. CHS football suffers a loss this year in the retirement of Bill Saltzman, who served as a coach for twenty years and the past six years as head mentor. Tackle ,f CHS Pantherettes worked their woy through the l953 season with two wins, two defeats, and those amazing four ties. Led by their co-captains, Joey Rosen- berg and Cassie Croft, the team ployed hard and fast in every garne, win, lose, or drow. Miss Virginia Redford's charges will never forget that heartbreaking loss to Hatboro in the freezing cold, nor Corol Foust's thrilling penolty bully, nor the fun they got out of weoring their bright gold knee socks. Varsity scoring honors were shored by Dottie Jones, Patty Heller, and Cassie Croft, with three tol- lies apiece. Stolwart forward line players, Morgie Davis, Alice Klewer, Susie Wagner, Dottie Jones, Patty Heller, Cassie Croft, Ruth Schoirer, and Carol Robinson, rocked up the points for the Chelts, while the staunch defense set up by Carol Faust, Joey Rosenberg, Gail Gor- don, Borbora Morgan, Peggy Royer, Barbara Brurnfield, and Katy Koercher often prevented CHS opponents from scoring. A l-O win over Abington completed the Junior Varsity record of five wins and three defeats. The Three Mus- keteers of scoring for the J.V.'s were Sally Moos, Morgie Abrahams, and Solly Randolph. The J.V.'s proved their high scoring obility by downing Lower Merion, 4-O. Hockey HOCKEY TEAM-BELOW Lek tv Ri9lll'.
