After a slight deviation to Annapolis, we reached our goal and of all the pilgrims to Washington it was generally agreed that we were the most begrimed. Since most of you either have been to the nation's capitol or will go if you get to be Seniors, we will not describe the trip in detail but merely hit the high spots. All the baddies were put on the H.M.S. Kraybill. But a few of them got away and went in an unescorted bus. Words will never be adequate to describe what went on in this bus. Friday morn Al Leyden went up to a guard on the treasury build' ing and asked for a. Coke. Elsie Boyer knocked off five pounds climbing the Washington Monument. The green parrot in the Pan-American Patio, aside from trying to crab the act, was very insistent. The Washington electric light bulb company is still suing Bill Wise. Duncan Dunn made his expenses. ' The barkers in the busses know how many millions everything in Washington cost but they don't stick to each other's stories. One told us the Army building, a mile long, was built in ninety days and the Class of 1930 47 4 M ww , ,v,, mf- v,AL.d.,. , ,L I K Q ..V,A. f :Q ,. A mf :i - i its V. . Jay Mawhinney and Paul Seaman went for a ride Saturday morning. The dance hall in the hotel was so small that you had to back up to turn around. But the orchestra was good-when they got there. The most tantalizing thing of the whole trip was the smile in the voice of the fellow who said cheerfully, Good morning, sixfthirtyf' The most beautiful thing seen was the blonde in Annapolis. Dick Newburger was elected chief of the Chises, a word mean' ingless to a non-member. A According to many people it was rather ironical to show us all those ten-thousandfdollar bills in the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Some people scorned the statement on the mimeographed sheets- 'LDon't wear new shoes -and did. They are still limping. The Senior girls were rather quiet Monday moming in school. They were too tired for dates Saturday night. Anyway, the fellows were all broke. The breaks on the engine weren't so good coming home. We had to get a train back to Elkins Park. The Katzes appear to be fourlets in the picture. No, nothing is wrong with your eyes-merely a revolving camera. The canes started at a cartwheel and came down to two bits, but it took arguing. And everybody was very glad to get back to school Monday. Item I We direct that all unnecessary debts in- cluding our funeral expenses be paid as soon after our departure as conveniently may be done. Item II We bequeath to the present Upper Middler Class our apparent conceit, our wool-pulling abilities, and our class-cutting talents, which have gained for us our present eminence on the dizzy heights of Seniordom. Item III To the Student Body we bequeath our notorious school spirit, to be used only in case of emergency. Item IV The standing records of Betty Stiles and 'Aust' Woolens we leave to Sue Murray and Jack Peabody. Item V To the rest of the world we leave the chance to put future memorial funds on a competitive basis. Item VI We leave for the consideration of posterity the brilliant plan providing for a two-day school week and a five-day week-end. This year we have maintained a distinctive and very unique type of magazine. The title page cuts, made by last year's editor, have been standardized. The new department of modern book reviews has been a success. The increased quality of the poetry department is obvious. The fine appearance of the magazine has been greatly enhanced by illustrative headings for each story and covers attractive in both design and color. Also, we have retained the double style of makeup and the antique stock. We feel that EL DELATOR may take its place among the best high school magazines, judging from both contents and appearance. So, as the staff this year 'has taken progressive steps, we know that EL DELATOR will continue to grow during future years. 66 Senior El Delator Cheltonian Under the guidance of Miss Downes, the Cheltonicm has greatly improved during the past year. The Staff is using a former plan of operating without an Editorfin-chief. The Managing Editor assumes charge of assembling each issue. The publication is decidedly better in printing and makefup. The news sources other than athletics are covered more competently than formerly, thereby producing a better balanced paper. Through the plan of subscription in connection with the A. A. ticket nearly every student has received the paper. Because of this, the staff confidently hopes that the Cheltonian has proved to be one of the progressive agents in the school for better school spirit. Class of 1930 67 Clubs LUBS are important activities in the school life of Cheltenham stu' dents. Unusual interest in them has been shown this year, with which has come the addition of several new ones as Modern Authors, Girls' Fencing and Book Lovers. Among the other clubs continued from last year many have done outstanding work. The Camera, Band, Draf matic, Social Service and Girls' Choral Clubs are numbered among these. Senior Student Council THE Student Government Association consisting of twenty-four members including the elected oilicers, has been meeting each Wed- nesday morning. The actual work of the association has been largely carried on by the various committees appointed by the president. These committees consist of a chairman, who is a member of the association, and such other members of the student body as he or she desires to appoint. The following are a list of these active committees: Lunch Room, Lost and Found, School Property, Assembly, Publicity, Home Room Award, Fire Drill. Each of these committees has been very active. The Lunch Room Committee has made our lunch room one of which we may be proud. The Lost and Found Committee has done a commendable piece of work and largely through their efforts our treasury has been able to pay the last 'fifty dollars due on our pledge to the Abington Memorial Hospital as well as to permit the School Property Committee to plant the hedge in front of the school. The treasury has also been able to assist in the completion of several home room projects, such as the placing of new ribbons on the ventilators . ' The School Property Committee has been unusually successful in caring for school property and having such damage as has been done promptly repaired. Each committee has done its work eiliciently and effectively. Class of 1930 69 1 National Honor Society N MAY, 1929, Frances Armstrong, Esther Duckloe, Ned Hergelf roth, Aaron Manderbach, Ruth Gpenshaw and Frances Unruh were elected to membership' in the National Honor Society. The officers for 1930 were Aaron Manderbach, presidentg Ned Hergelroth, vicefpresidentg Ruth Openshaw, secretary, and Esther Duck' loe, treasurer. For a half year this group, under the guidance of Miss MacDonald, endeavored to carry out the plans initiated in 1929. The listed Student plan was continued, and working on suggestions of the previous group, an attempt was made to devise a point! system that would limit and encourage participation in activities. Among the numerous other activf ities of the group was the organization of a club, the Leadership Forum, for the purpose of discussing matters pertaining to leadership. The speakers have been Dr. Rowland, Miss Nusbaum, Mr. Kraybill, Mrs. Lambert, Mr. Herring and Dr. Steinmetz. The Honor Society enter' tained Norristown Honor Society at a tea to which representatives from Lower Merion and Jenkintown were also invited. Frances Unruh was invited, by the Lower Merion representatives, to speak to their student 70 Senior El Delator body about our activities. Frances did this, and as a result, a chapter was organized in that school. The Honor Society also contributed S10 to the Karlson Memorial Fund, and its Social Welfare Committee sent cards to students and faculty members who were ill. A new Alma Mater song, written by Frances Armstrong, arose from this group. It was presented to the student body at the Installation Service on March 21, 1930, when Florence Butz, Henry Heyser, Frank Kaufman, Phyllis Giles, James Farquhar, Mary Clay, Louise Daniel, Marcia Daniel, Richard Wolf, Annamarie Heinemann, and Sarah Hen' dricks were taken in. The Reverend Jack Harte spoke on this occasion. Reinforced with fresh ideas and opinions from these newly elected members, the Honor Society concentrated their efforts on the point system and an accumulative reward for service. The results of these elforts formulated themselves into a definite plan. A certificate was pref sented at Commencement to not more than 10 per cent. of the graduat- ing class, Honor Society members, excluded, who rendered conspicuous service to the school during their four years in High School. The season of activity for this group closed with the annual alumna: dinner on June 11. Class of 1930 71 lnterscholastic Forensic Society ' H 'HE' Debating Team has not had a very successful year, winning only one of six debates. The question for debate was: Resolved, That the Installment Plan of Buying is Harmful to the American People. The personnel of the affirmative team included Duncan Dunn, William Kraybill, Grace Paist, and Frances Unruh. They debated Rad' nor and Lansdowne. The personnel of the negative team included Clara Berlin, Samuel Blumenthal, Ruth Openshavv and Britton Harris. They debated Abing' ton and Upper Darby. The aflirmative team which debated George School included Grace Smelo, Grace Paist, Louise Daniel, and Frances Unruh. The negative team which debated George School included Clara Berlin, Isabel Koch, Elsie Boyer, and Ruth Openshaw. This debate was the only victory of the season. Mr. Karl Smith coached the teams. 72 Senior El Delator Senior Play The Senior play of the Class of 1930 which was presented on March 7 and 8, was, Mr. Pim Passes By, by A. A. Milne. Frimma Tutelman The play was produced under the direction of J. Lawrence Strickf ler. Miss Nusbaum and the Art Department constructed the setting. Class of 1930 73 Upper Middler Play THE play presented by the Upper Middler Class this year was tne wellfknown classic of New England character, Icebound, by Owen Davis. It was enacted on the evening of December 13, 1929, before an audience, which, in spite of inclement weather, was probably the largest of the year to attend a dramatic entertainment in Cheltenf ham High School. The leading roles were admirably played by Robert Beatty and Annemarie Heinemann, and splendid support was furnished by the rest of the cast, consisting of Albert Bull, Edith Donat, Margaret Lane, Louise Daniel, Dick Wolf, Gertrude Clowes, Mary Landis, Alfred Busse, jack Staub, and Matthew Mcllhenny. The play was coached by the '31 Class sponsor, Mr. Weston. 74 -if gl Senior El Delator The Band HE band, under the able supervision of Mr. Taylor, has accom' plished a fine piece of work this year. In the beginning of the season, when Mr. Taylor has a handful of people, the band was talked about with a skeptical tone, but after the students, as well as outsiders, saw and heard them do their stuff, at the various football games, they began to sit up and take notice. A little later in the season, the pitiful plea of Mr. Kraybill, in reference to our, Pantsless boys, brought to the fore the good Samari- tans -the ParentsfTeachers Association, who willingly volunteered to supply the necessary pecuniary needs of our band. On Thanksgiving morning, when the band strutted out on the field in their blue and gold uniforms, everyone's eyes popped out of their heads, and what a cheer the band received! From that time on the band has been recognized as A BAND. Everyone is looking forward with great interest to an even better performance from the band, in the future. Class of 1930 75 The Orchestra THE orchestra, this year, under the excellent leadership of Mr. Taylor, has greatly increased the quality of its performances. Many new instruments have been added and more interest has been displayed. The fine appreciation of the school has been obvious upon the occasions of its performances.
