MATH Edward Sahagian Susan Castella Thomas Mahoney ■I I Richard Fineran Mark Feldman Alice Sandberg L The function of the Math Department is to prepare and to provide the students with necessary mathematical skills and knowledge. These skills and knowledge will be helpful and should prove to be essential in the students’ futures. LANGUAGE Chelsea High’s Foreign Language Depart¬ ment offers courses in Spanish, Italian, and Latin. Latin has become increasingly popu¬ lar in the last few years, and German will be reintroduced in the near future. Foreign language study is an enriching and rewarding experience that enables the stu¬ dent to learn to speak another language and understand and appreciate other cul¬ tures. A walk through the language corri¬ dor fills your ears with SALVE, HOLA, HASTA LUEGO, BUON GIORNO, and CIAO. Marilyn Danon Filberto Lopez BILINGUAL Linda Breen Robert Rabin Aurora Zayas-Little Marilyn Glover Mary Guerriero The Bilingual Program is in its fifth year of operation at Chelsea High School. Presently staffed by four full-time teachers and one career- guidance counselor, the program provides services for approximate¬ ly one hundred and ten students. Like all Title VII (Bilingual) Pro¬ grams, Chelsea’s is designed to meet three objectives. First, Eng¬ lish as a Second Language classes help Spanish speaking students de¬ velop their English skills. Secondly, they may take Social Studies, Math and Science courses in their native language, Spanish. This enables the bilingual students to continue developing their skills and knowl¬ edge in the different subject areas. Thirdly, the Bilingual Program fos¬ ters an understan ding and appre¬ ciation of both the students’ Latin American culture and history as well as the important historical and cultural aspects of the United States. 22

ENGL Jacqueline Gagnon Daniel Allen Carol Cantor Michael Karp The English Department at Chelsea High is trying to do what similar departments all over the country are attempting - we want to send our students off into the world at the end of their senior year with an ability to communicate well, to listen with understanding, and to read with appreciation. The class of 1980 will be a measure of our success, for to the extent that they succeed, we have succeeded; if they fail, that is to a degree our failure too. The skills that we have given them, properly used, will be building blocks to further understanding. Let us hope they use those building blocks well. - M.J.K. 24
