Frank Herlihy, Master Joseph Mauro, Junior Master J. Frank Herlihy, Master Joseph Mauro, Junior Master 19 Phyllis Fogel Alfred Stawicki The Business Department at¬ tempts to familiarize stu¬ dents with The American Business System; provide training in managing personal finances; teach principles of accounting, filing, business math; teach secretarial skills and business law. Students leave with many valuable skills used in the world of business. Edwin Weinstein Sandra Frangules John Manning Kevin Cassidy Carol Shore James Barooshian 20 Judith Benea Joseph Moran Peter Steriti Bradley Toney Myles Brown Phyllis Hanson The Guidance Office, now called “Counseling and Career Information Center,” stands ready to serve stu¬ dents and their parents in making de¬ cisions regarding schooling after graduation or planning a successful entry into the world of work. Some of the memorable functions of the department have been the suc¬ cessful College Nights and Financial Aid Nights that are held yearly and are looked forward to with great an¬ ticipation by both students and par¬ ents. Irving Schwartz Katherine Berenson 21 LANGUAGE Chelsea High’s Foreign Language Depart¬ ment offers courses in Spanish, Italian, and Latin. Latin has become increasingly popu¬ lar in the last few years, and German will be reintroduced in the near future. Foreign language study is an enriching and rewarding experience that enables the stu¬ dent to learn to speak another language and understand and appreciate other cul¬ tures. A walk through the language corri¬ dor fills your ears with SALVE, HOLA, HASTA LUEGO, BUON GIORNO, and CIAO. Marilyn Danon Filberto Lopez BILINGUAL Linda Breen Robert Rabin Aurora Zayas-Little Marilyn Glover Mary Guerriero The Bilingual Program is in its fifth year of operation at Chelsea High School. Presently staffed by four full-time teachers and one career- guidance counselor, the program provides services for approximate¬ ly one hundred and ten students. Like all Title VII (Bilingual) Pro¬ grams, Chelsea’s is designed to meet three objectives. First, Eng¬ lish as a Second Language classes help Spanish speaking students de¬ velop their English skills. Secondly, they may take Social Studies, Math and Science courses in their native language, Spanish. This enables the bilingual students to continue developing their skills and knowl¬ edge in the different subject areas. Thirdly, the Bilingual Program fos¬ ters an understan ding and appre¬ ciation of both the students’ Latin American culture and history as well as the important historical and cultural aspects of the United States. 22 MATH Edward Sahagian Susan Castella Thomas Mahoney ■I I Richard Fineran Mark Feldman Alice Sandberg L The function of the Math Department is to prepare and to provide the students with necessary mathematical skills and knowledge. These skills and knowledge will be helpful and should prove to be essential in the students’ futures. We hope the students will be able to apply their math knowledge one way or another during their lifetimes to improve this ever changing world. Francis Mahoney Emily Romano ENGL Jacqueline Gagnon Daniel Allen Carol Cantor Michael Karp The English Department at Chelsea High is trying to do what similar departments all over the country are attempting - we want to send our students off into the world at the end of their senior year with an ability to communicate well, to listen with understanding, and to read with appreciation. The class of 1980 will be a measure of our success, for to the extent that they succeed, we have succeeded; if they fail, that is to a degree our failure too. The skills that we have given them, properly used, will be building blocks to further understanding. Let us hope they use those building blocks well. - M.J.K. 24 ISH TITLE I READING Reading Skills is a part of Chel¬ sea’s federally funded Title I Reading Program. Students in Reading Skills are tested on their reading abilities, and any weaknesses that are discovered are improved upon through an individualized instructional pro¬ gram. Each student works inde¬ pendently on his or her own lev¬ el, using a variety of materials. to OCCUPATIONAL i EDUCATION The Occupational Education Department at Chelsea High School prepares students for careers in electricity, electronics, power mechanics, graphic arts, technical illustration, woodworking and health. Grade nine is a crucial year in the decision-making process involved in career choice. The exploratory program in Occupational Education offered in grade nine introduces students to all occupational education areas. The students are exposed to each subject and select a particular subject to pursue from grades ten-twelve. Once they decide on a direction, they have made a tentative career choice. Upon graduation, the students will have entry level skills for jobs or may continue their education. Mary Raimo James Lannon Eugene McElroy Michael Celona Patrick Manning James Hunt Theodore Aronis Michael Flaherty Richard Goyetche Harriet Cort 26 SCIENCE Maurice Pearlman The department of science attempts to evoke interest in the students to study as many branches as possible. In today’s world of ever- increasing discoveries of scientific knowledge, an uneducated citizenry can be catastrophic to our country. During the last 6 or 7 years we have more than doubled all our knowledge since the dawn of history up to the mid-seven¬ ties. Because of this and other considerations we have established modern laboratories to teach earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics as well as subdivisions of these main areas. We have added semester courses to our regular full year courses to help our stu¬ dents seek out areas they like. After all, suc¬ cess breeds success. If we can inculcate prop¬ er attitudes to learn in our students, we will be able to influence their ability to learn. Richard Walsh Anthony Cardarelli Joseph Slater Eileen Fishman SPECIAL EDUCATION In order to provide comprehensive educational services to students of various abilities and learning styles, the Special Ed programs offer learn¬ ing center and resource room classes. Students enrolled in these classes also participate in a wide range of other courses and activities at C.H.S. Philomcna Nazzaro Mary Ann Fairbanks Elise Warshaucr Paula Lesiczka 28 Janice Factor Lawrence Bloom Bonita DiMarino Joseph Sullivan SOCIAL STUDIES James O’Donnell r Richard Feinberg Ernest Sullivan The social studies department at Chelsea High feels it has a special place in the total develop- Gilbert Cherry ment of the CHS student. Not only does it at¬ tempt to instill in students a sense of history, an inquisitiveness for information and a mastery of subject matter, but most importantly it challenges students to think about the responsibility one owes to one’s self, one’s family, and this nation as they stride towards adulthood. John Welch Robert Tiro AMERICA Stein Constance Pike Michael PHYSICAL EDUCATION Saul Nechtem In order to have a sound mind, a sound body is needed. The depart¬ ment introduces different activities such as volleyball, basketball, hock¬ ey, archery, gymnastics, skiing, etc, that help to promote the students’ enthusiasm for a healthy body. Beverly Corwin Abraham Garnick Karen Nasti Irene Welch HOME ECONOMICS Home economics is open to both male and female. It includes not only cooking and sewing, but also studies in child development, mar¬ riage and family living. The class of 1980 was very fortunate to have as its advisor Mr. Peter Steriti. He, along with the class officers, worked diligently to make our years at Chelsea High School both happy and rewarding. For that, we thank them. STUDENT COUNCIL Seated, 1 - r: Pam Flibotte, Laurice Whyel, Jackie Bevere, Brenda Richards Standing: Denise Tedesco, Mr. Mike Sullivan (advisor), Cheryl Godin, Louise Casey, Audrey DePatto, Nancy Zaremba, Dawn DeAngeles, Robert Mugford, Lisa Forman, Laurie Jagelski, Paul Zullo The Student Council is a very important part of Chelsea High School. It is not only the students’ government, but it is also responsible for organizing many social activities that make high school a little bit more interesting. For example, this year’s Student Council ran such activities as the Homecoming Dance, The 50’s Dance, Pep Rallies, and Holiday parties. The Student Council gets the students involved with their city, and with helping people all over. It is a worthwhile experience for active students who want to take the time to help others and to make their school years at Chelsea High School as enjoyable as they can possibly be. 1 THE BEACON STAFF A group of dedicated individuals who labored long and hard. Hopefully, they had some fun. Maybe they even learned a few things. Besides maintaining standards of academic excellence, service, leader¬ ship and character, its members were involved in many varied activities. Soon after a lovely installa¬ tion of officers and induction of new members buf¬ fet dinner, the Annual Christmas Secret Santa and Toy Drive began. They were both great successes. The society also sponsored three 3-D movies, a cake sale and its annual Blood Drive in conjunction with the Massachusetts General Hospital.
