For the first time in CHS history, all girls were elected as officers of the senior class. President Kathy Burke, Vice President Susan Reczcowski, Secretary Mamie Robin¬ son, and Treasurer Margie O ' Malley wasted no time in proving that female officers are just as efficient as male ones. Pres. Burke had a hidden tape recorder installed in her office to record historic conversations for posterity. Why is the tape recorder hidden? Says Ms. Burke, The color of the recorder would clash with the decor of my office - and the )ffice of the President must be preserved for future presidents. Vice Pres. Reczcowski celebrated her victory by playing a game of golf. Unfortu¬ nately, 5 people got in the way of Ms. Vice President ' s golf balls and were slightly in¬ jured. She had the golf balls bronzed and sent to the unlucky victims as a token of apology. Secretary Mamie Robinson released a policy statement of the Burke Administration after elections. To quote Ms. Robinson - To the best of my recollection, at this point in time any statement is inoperable. Shortly after election, Treas. O ' Malley expressed discontent over the condition of the money in the treasury, saying that the bills were wrinkled and dirty. From now on, she stated, all money will be laundered. The history making Burke Administration served CHS well. Their valuable experience as elected officials has surely been excellent preparation for future political careers. A com¬ pany spokesman says of Schell, His is the face of the ' 70 ' s. The soon to be famous Schell disagrees - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! 92 Here He Is .. . Charging that the officials of the Miss America beauty- contest discriminated against men, Michael McGee of CHS filed a suit against the pageant. The decision that was hand¬ ed down agreed with McGee ' s charge and the pageant was ordered to admit male contestants. McGee then entered as the delegate from Massachusetts and to everyone ' s surprise - he won. When asked if he had received different treatment than the female contestants, McGee replied, I didn’t get the customary winner ' s kiss from Bert Parks. Mr. America is now charging smiling Bert with discrimination for that slip in form. The Beat Goes On Since the divorce of the battling Bonos, America has been searching for another pair of singing sweet¬ hearts to take their place. Well, according to Col¬ umbia Records, the new Sonny and Cher has been found right here at CHS. Calling themselves Duvie and Deb , the tuneful twosome has cut their first record, I Got the Beat and All I Ever Need is You . Certainly not the Chelsea High track team! In an effort to dispel this widespread belief, the boys have taken up ballet. They plan to present a special season ' s end recital of an origi¬ nal ballet, High Jump Suite . Here ' s some photos of the team in rehearsal. It Came From Outer Space CHS’ Dave Webb believes that there is life on other planets. According to Dave, at a recent track meet, an unidentified flying object landed on the field and an army of little green men trooped out, ready to destroy anything in their path. Spotting the onrushing creatures, the fast thinking Webb grabbed his trusty javelin and charged at the mob of angry martians. Frightened by the size of their opponent, the invaders retreated into their craft and took off for home. Dave expects to be commended soon for his heroic effort - when he finds someone who will believe his story. One Every Four Hours In the past, CHS football star Henry Buster Annese has been plagued by tension headaches caused by the tightness of his helmet. When the Anacin Company learn¬ ed of Buster ' s problem, they set to work and developed a brand of aspirin for a football player ' s special needs. The pain killers, called Five-Fours , will be heartily en¬ dorsed in TV and magazine ads by number 54 himself. Says Buster, Those Five-Fours really work, man; they cured my one big pain in the head! IN TROUBLE Photogenic While enjoying the fresh air and sunshine one lunch period, CHS ' John Kierkewicz unknowingly made his mov¬ ie debut. Just imagine John ' s surprise when he found out that he was captured on film by Officer O ' Reilly ' s candid camera! Brooks Breaks Out Wayne Brooks, is one CHS senior who tried to beat the system. Not willing to accept the 5 hours he had received. Brooks boldly tried to escape the detention room by climb¬ ing out the window. He safely made it onto the first floor ledge, but there his futile attempt at freedom came to an end. Wayne unknowingly set off the alarm and he was soon greeted by Mr. Rosa and a pack of attack dogs. For his stab at defying CHS authority, Brooks was put into solitary confinement on a diet of nothing but beefaroni and milk. Is there no justice? Betcha Can’t Eat Just One CHS ' Dorothy Grayson was determined to set a new world record for the number of bag lunches consumed in 24 minutes. Dorothy managed to set a new mark by downing 12 pepper steak sandwiches. However, she soon found the whole thing to be a rather gripping experience. 95 Typecast CHS ' Richard Chapin made history last week when he invented the first fountain pen that writes under whipped cream. The royalties alone from his invention will bring him over 5 million dollars. Chapin got the idea for his unique invention when he was working as a soda jerk at a local ice cream shop. It was murder trying to write out the checks - whipped cream got all over everything! , says Richard. One day I was trying to write a check for a par¬ ticularly sloppy sundae and POW! I got the idea! Chapin is currently working on a tastey new project - edible ink in chocolate, strawberry, and butterscotch flavors. Cream Of The Crop George Yee, a CHS senior, has made printing history. He has invented the first typewriter that prints in Chinese. Yee ' s invention, the result of years of experiment, will make it possible for books to be printed in native Chinese lettering. It will also make George very rich. He’s sold his plans to Smith-Corona for the tidy sum of $1 million. What is Yee planning to do with the earnings he ' ll receive from the greatest invention since the printing press ? The Aldermanic Chambers was the scene of the swearing in ceremony of the student officials. After a luncheon at the Elks Club, the students had their chance to run their city for a day. Chelsea out played, out hus¬ tled, and out classed the Crimson Tide, and at no time was a victory in doubt. Although it was only Chelsea’s 9th victory in the long series, it was one of the sweetest. Outdoor Track and field, once a much neglected sport, real¬ ly came into the spotlight this year at Chelsea High. One of the main reasons was the hard working Red Devil outdoor track team. Attracting a loyal band of buffs at each meet, the scrapping Devils fought hard against tough opposition. Under Coach Bavaro’s guidance, the boys improved with every meet and always displayed a determination to make C.H.S. a winner. The senior members of the team performed well. Hurdler Richard Turk Szarythe, shotputters Charlie Schell and Henry Buster” Annese; javelin throwers Dave Webb and Tom Moore; and long jumper Paul Mal- achowski turned in top performances at each meet. Dis¬ tance runners Ed McFayden and Ken Botticelli, and sprinters Webb and Malachowski consistently ran hard, never giving the competition the edge. All in all, the outdoor track team improved greatly this past season, and although their records may not show it, a hardy band of the Red and Black overall had a successful and satisfying year. Hockey This year’s Chelsea High hockey team once again proved that as far as hustle is concerned, they ' re number one. Drawing enthusiastic crowds at every game, the Big Red Hockey Machine put up a tough fight against each opponent. Led by Captain Paul Arsenault, Co-Captains Marty Botticelli, Bill MacKay, and Wayne Ryan, and seniors Ed McFayden, Phil Bolton, Jim Vahey and John Marino, the Devils provided much ex¬ citement through the long winter. Under the leadership of hardworking Co-Captains Ken Botticelli, Ed McFayden, and Dino Delyani, the Harriers produced their best record ever, 13 wins and 0 losses. The big story of the year was freshman super runner, all-star Bobby Goss. Goss was the G. B. L. ' s undefeated run¬ ner and broke the league record for the fastest time. But he couldn ' t have done it alone; seniors Doug DeSimone, Joe Esseichick, Kevin Veator, and first year runner Jim McGon- igle contributed in an outstand¬ ing fashion. Max — Ed A refreshing innovation at CHS this year is the Max - Ed Omnibus Program. Omnibus brings movies, demonstrations, concerts and other treats to students during study periods. Some of the programs enjoyed this year were a concert by a jazz ensem¬ ble, a demonstration by the K - 9 force of the Boston Police Dept., a film of the Chelsea fire, and showings of the movies House of Wax , Cat Ballou , and Jason and the Argonauts . Omnibus is greatly appreciated in that it breaks up the boredom of a student’s long day. Hopefully, it will be around for a long time. F.F.A. In keeping with the current back-to-nature trend, this hardy group of future farmers packed up their rakes and hoes and went off on a visit to Old MacDonald’s farm. The diligent group worked hard from sun-up till sundown chopping trees, raking the potato patch, and feeding the chickens. Their chores were made much easier, however, after one lucky farmer found Old MacDonald ' s secret still, which was hidden in a dark corner of the pigeon coop. The farmers stopped working and paused for liquid refreshment. The day ended on an unfortunate note, though, when a pigeon who had been roosting too close to the still crashed into the coop in an unsuccessful flight attempt. The walls promptly collapsed and buried the still. With a hiccup here and a hiccup there, our farmers staggered home, tired but nonetheless very happy. 144 Where were you in ' 52? This year ' s staff was selected after they passed Maharaja ' s endurance test. They were called upon to count the number of picas on a 3-R form while singing You’re Next in Swahili. Our editor, Joyce Millman, was chosen after she passed the supreme test; she en¬ dured Maharaja ' s cigar smoke and wise aphorisms for an unprecedented year and a half. If her eyes seem glazed it is because she has found Nirvana (or lost her mind). However, this year ' s staff has displayed true faith in the Book of Josten. Rejoice, O Beacon Buffs; para¬ dise-the Kingdom of the Hilltop-awaits you! EDITOR: Joyce Millman. PHOTOGRAPHY STAFF: L TO R, Douglas DeSimone, Joe Esseichick. I am a high school senior and I have been asked to the prom by a dreamy guy who I ' ve had my eye on for a long time. He’s very high class and has perfect manners. What if I make a slip in etiquette? It could mean our relationship! What am I to do? Signed, Laurel from Topeka Dear Beaconetta, I am a male high school senior. I have a prom com¬ ing up soon and I need some advice. I don ' t know much about the social graces. What are some blunders I shouldn ' t make? Signed, Hardly Casanova Dear Laurel and Hardly, The following are tips for a suc¬ cessful prom night. Stay in step with my advice and you’ll be dancing in air. Beaconetta Girls Boys 1. DO NOT take your corsage off and place it in your water glass. It will stay fresh all night anyway! 2. If your date is 4 ' 11 , DO NOT wear 6 inch platform shoes - the Sonny and Cher look is OUT! 3. DO NOT become the life of the party and belly dance on top of a table. A prom is some¬ thing people will remember all their lives. 4. NEVER wear a brunette hairpiece if you are a blonde. Tacky, tacky! 5. DON ' T offer to go dutch - he may agree. 6. DO NOT insist that you sit with your friends and he sit with his! 7. DO NOT have bumper stickers made up urging people to vote for you for Prom Queen - that’s not how she ' s chosen! 8. DO NOT fish through other people ' s fruit cups - even if you didn ' t get a cherry. 9. DO NOT wrap the tablecloth around your¬ self if you see a girl with the same dress as yours. This will only attract more attention. 10. DO NOT ask the waitress for a doggie bag. If mom and dad want to sample the food they ' ll just have to go there themselves! 1. NEVER, NEVER thumb to the prom! Try your best to find someone with extra room in their car. 2. DO NOT cross your suspenders in the front - ask Dad how to do it. 3. REMEMBER - the floating candle is NOT a punch bowl! 4. DO NOT pick up your date in a Winnebago! 5. Take your date someplace classy after the prom. McDonald ' s is fine for just everyday, but... 6. DO NOT play cards at the table, even if you ARE on a streak. 7. DO NOT wear your letter jacket as an overcoat - try for something a bit more dressy. 8. DO NOT ask the band to play Smoke on the Water - most prom bands just aren ' t equipped for it. 9. DO NOT - REPEAT - DO NOT give your date a homemade corsage, even if you DO like dandelions! 10. DO NOT glue your boutonniere to your jacket - there is a hole for it! 157 % m Dinner Dance Chateau De Ville • I K ' ml p s| 1 1 v A pfcjS w M 1 ti! 1 y ingT ap | wKHraJW« - ' H % ajsSStafe ¥ 166 Let me entertain you. . . Former headmaster Nathan Margolis retired this past year after serving Chelsea High for seven years. He has left his mark on Chelsea High in the form of genuine accomplishment and ad¬ vancement. We thank him for his dedication and concern for his students. Junior Master Vincent Apruzzese also left Chelsea High this past year in order to return to teaching. His patience, understanding, and no non¬ sense attitude helped him develop a warm rapport with both students and teachers. Although his presence is sorely missed, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
