CHRIS ALBANO and ALEX RISEMAN have decided to go into the magazine business after graduation. It will include a color section of the latest style in clothing and a complete list of ’Who’s Who. ” SARA-JEAN ALPERT is deciding on a career of either training invisible dogs or coaching pro basketball. Rumor has it that she will do both; that is, train dogs in the off season. FRAN MORAN is planning his 1976 campaign for Mayor against MIKE ZULLO. It is heard that ZULLO wants MORAN out of the race and has made him an offer that he can’t refuse. Police are trying to find DENISE DRISCOLL. They can ' t figure out if she ' s missing or just absent. JAY L. FREEDMAN, TOM MALINOWSKI, DANNY STASKIEWICZ, and MOOSE FRANCIS have been offered $500,000 for their controversial basketball picture. They don ' t know whether to take the money or repent for their action by buying the coach a copy of the record, One More Chance. After so many months of aggravation from a certain yearbook advisor, SHERMAN DUBIN and STEVE SCHWARTZ have turned in their cameras and Excedrin headache 708 for a copy of the record, You ' re Next. SUSAN BUCKLEY, who has stuck her foot in her mouth so many times, gave up talking for lent. Lent w as over two months ago, Susan. Speak up! TOM HOGAN and STEVE WHALEN have finally opened their own bar and grill. They can ' t decide on a name, though. Rumor has it that it ' s down to two choices, either The Fishing Club or Hockeytown U. S. A. While all worthy college candidates were receiving acceptances to schools, DONNA HAR¬ VEY was rejected by Perkins Institute. It is heard from reliable sources that the dean of the school reported she was beyond help. Speaking of college, C.H. S. ' s own Larry Czonka, MIKE BARBOZA, has received offers from many reputable institutions of higher learning. He hasn ' t decided whether to continue his education and football career or to retire as the first Adonis of the Agganis Bowl. BRUCE BARTLETT, WAYNE IACOVIELLO, and RONNY DEMETRIO, the rock stars of C. H. S. 1974, have been approached by a certain record company to sign a contract for the next ten years. All three declined the offer saying that they would rather just jam through the next decade. All the candidates for the Couple of the Year Award have found themselves disqualified from the contest. DONNA FRANGIAMONE and ELLIOT KATZ MAN were ousted when DONNA tripped ELLIOT while he was running the 300. SANDRA CARABINERIS and BOB LEONE were dropped when officials found out BOB made SANDRA fix a flat on his car during a snow storm. Last, but not least, DAVE SARTORELLI and THERESA MORAN were dropped when DAVE threw a crop- 92 ooooooooooooooooooooooooo per at THERESA in the Beacon room, explaining his action by saying she was too vapid. BRIAN DOYLE and ROY LETTIERI have accepted the positions as Co-Captains of the 1974 C. H. S. baseball team. It has been heard through the grapevine that their first official act as C. C. ' s will be to tell the coach that the entire team refuses to get haircuts. If Merrit Park doesn ' t see any action this spring, it will be understandable, but more than likely we will be seeing a lot ears starting around April. KAREN ESSEICHICK is reported in fairly good condition in the psychiatric ward at Mass. General Hospital. At last report she was resting well but kept repeating, Mr. Bloom, I thought you said ' headline ' , not ' deadline! ' Despite all rumors, MIKE WILCOX says that he will not pose for the yearbook centerfold. He says that he cannot picture himself with a staple in his naval. DAVE BELANGER, RICK BELANGER, VAL MERCARDO, BRETT HOLSTEN, JOE FINNE¬ GAN, JOE COPELLO, LANCE CLARK, ED SZYDLOWSKI, and DAVE MORRISON have all been awarded gold copies of the hit single, Smokin ' in the Boys ' Room. DEBBIE MICKIEWICZ and MARIE MURRAY are tied in the race of who can eat the most A1 Zack ' s cheesesteak subs. CATHY KILEY and LYN SMITH are both suffering from severe cases of stomach abuse. The attack came on right after the girls finished the cafeteria ' s Easter special. DONNA MONDOU, PHYLIS COLLINS, NIKKI PARROTTA, CAROL FORD, and ANGELA GENNARIO have all recovered well after they were attacked by a stink bomb sniper while sit¬ ting in their favorite place in the cafeteria. After another successful year as cashbox girl, NANCY LOSH has been offered many hand¬ some positions in some of Chelsea ' s leading bank and trust companies. Queen of the 1973 Junior Prom, DEBBIE McGAULEY is up for the title of the Biggest Q of 1974. There is no truth to the rumor that DRUSELLA WELCH has taken residence in the Little Brown Jug. STEVE DePAULO has worked out quite an act imitating all the sports celebraties of C. H. S. Although he doesn ' t plan to make a career out of it, he can be contacted for almost any wed¬ ding, birthday party, or audience that will have him. JEAN GULIZIA has been honored by receiving a lifetime membership to the Gay Squad. The entire C. H. S. FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION have expressed their regrets in see¬ ing the CLASS of 1974 leave. They have reportedly sent a sympathy card to the entire outside world explaining that they did everything they could to stop the graduation, but they were sorry to say they failed. Performing their almost in¬ surmountable duties, they have earned the envy of many of our nation ' s politicians who marvel at how so much can be accomplished with so little time and effort. While the nation was battling with the energy crisis and Watergate, our student government busied itself with such crucial problems as the menu for the Inauguration and whether to hire the Allman Brothers or Guy Lombardo for the Ball. These issues had become burning issues throughout the high school, but our student government managed to come up with solutions. With so many citizens complaining about the exorbitant taxes, the representatives had to resort to strong-arm tactics. So, at the end of the year we had many injured and im¬ poverished taxpayers lacking in finances, but knowledgeable in the ways of democracy. Though old and tired and some¬ what in need of rejuvenation, the streets of Chelsea somehow still have a tinge of vivacity that por¬ trays each street ' s personality. When associated with its particular mark of recognition, identity of any street comes easily. Either paved, hot topped, or cobblestone the streets are the lifeline of Chelsea, a city small in area but big on tradition. . ' !,« ■ There is no reason for a resi¬ dent of Chelsea to go outside our city for his wants or needs. Chelsea has a variety of buildings, stores, and restaurants that offer any¬ thing a person could possibly want or desire. Unique and convenient is the only way to describe the buildings and facilities of Chelsea. Any inactive, indolent, inert, lazy, slothful, sluggish, trifling, or unemployed person looking for a place to idle has no problem in Chelsea. After- all, what city would be complete without its local ’ ' hangouts”? Prattville, Mills, T he Projects, Dick ' s, Quigley, Bossom, Polonia, The Church, Carter Park, Bellingham Square, The Corner, Crescent, The Home, Fifth Street, and Chelsea Square are the favorite meeting and resting spots in Chelsea. Whether a person is young or old, Chelsea has a talkspot just right for everyone. It ' s assuring to know that some of the less industrious citizens en¬ joy their city ' s hangouts . LEGEND Hangouts Educational Institutions Parks Public Utilities Tourist Attractions Protective Agencies Athletic Facilities Recreational Facilities Religious Centers It looked extremely hopeless, when I started off the day; I heard no snap or crackle-pop to get me underway. To make my feelings very clear, I think I ' d rather die; For once again I ' d have to face a Day at Chelsea High. I’ll take you through what I would call an average day of school; Where readin ' writin ' ’n ’rithmetic make geniuses of fools. It all begins at 8:05, this story I shall tell; In homeroom I sit half asleep before the filing bell. There ' s ease in my demeanor as I stroll the lengthy hall; But once I reach those hectic stairs, I take a crushing fall. Regaining my composure, I thank God I ' m still alive; I ' ve learned that I must fight and claw if I am to survive. In class, the teacher warns us we will have to do the work; In confidence I sit back and listen with a smirk. I know that I won’t ever have to study for his test; With help from trusty gyp-sheets. I’ll score up among the best. With a smile of new found courage, I find half the day is done; But now in all reality, the worst has yet to come. My stomach turns, the time has come. I ' m ready for the punch; The clock strikes twelve and now it’s time to eat the School Bag Lunch. It’s just my luck that this one day should be the last of term; And now I’d have the chance to see just how much I learned. The smile has vanished from my face, my eyes reflect despair; The grades I’ve earned this quarter are too much for me to bear. Oh, somewhere in this Senior High the students surely know; That after four years stay at Chelsea, to college they will go; And somewhere students are assured the very best, no doubt; But there’s no hope for this poor soul-- One more flunkie has dropped out! Money Blues Money Blues axe a part of every graduate’s life. The gradu¬ ates of 1974 are unfortunately no different as you can see by this sad, but all too true, financial state¬ ment. Monsoon rains raised havoc with the schedule and the spirits of the team, co-captained by Roy Lettieri and Brian Doyle. When the sun finally shone, bad bounces, occasional miscues and the curve ball contin¬ ued the misfortune of the Red Devils. However, things turned much brighter with victories over Quincy and Everett. The pitch¬ ing of Alex Riseman and Mike Darcy combined with the hitting of Michael Barboza, Roy Let¬ tieri and Brian Doyle made for a winning combination. No pennant flew over Chelsea High School, yet never was there a lack of pride and spirit. As with the Red Sox, there ' s always next year and those new, snazzy, knit uniforms. 114 Girls ’ Basketball KNEELING: Eileen Pierce, Cheryl Thompson, Co-Cap¬ tains. STANDING: Anita Sheinker, Debbie Murphy, Regina Sullivan, Carol Roache, Barbara Cameron. This year was a memorable one for the Chelsea High Girls’ Basketball team. Coach Connie Pike assembled a spirited group of girls who made up in enthusi- am what they lacked in size. Led by seniors Sara Jean Alpert, Ei¬ leen Pierce, and Doreen Smith, the girls fought hard and proved tough competition for their op¬ ponents. Their efforts paid off in a thrilling win against the Chinese Y.M.C.A. Although it was not a produc¬ tive season in terms of wins, the girls learned much about team¬ work and spirit which will hope¬ fully lead to a winning season next year. These girls proved more than anything that it ' s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. The Red Devil Basketball team, under the tutelage of new coach Jack Niven, did an excellent job of adapting to a whole new system of offensive and defensive plays. In what was essentially a rebuilding year, there were many changes for the Devils. But as last years stars. Jay Freedman, Thomas Malinowski, Daniel Staskawicz, and William Francis departed, an entire new flock rose to lead the team. Starters Mark Feldman, Mike Wozniak, and fresh¬ man David Molloy showed the greatest im¬ provement as the year progressed. After a long and hard training camp under the direction of Coach Anthony Tiro and his staff, the Chelsea High School Eleven was ready for a win¬ ning season. Led by Tri-Captains Bubba, Hink, and Alex, the Devils handed Malden ' s Golden Tornadoes a loss for the second year in a row. After that victory, the Devils began sharpen¬ ing their pitchforks for Rindge Tech and sharpen them they did, for our mighty Eleven proceeded to roll to a stunning 44 to 8 victory over the Techmen. The 44 points represented the second highest amount of points in one year ever racked up by a CHS football team. It was Spinney to Staskiewicz for two quick scores, and then a strong and determined defensive wall kept Rindge Tech out of Chelsea ' s territory. Coming off the field to the happy cheering of their devoted and long suffering fans along with the strains of Stand Up and Cheer, the squad truly had earned the title, Football Heroes. It ' s not very often that a Chelsea High School team combines both strength and depth, along with the will and determination, to shape themselves into a true competitor. For the In¬ door Track season of 1974, though, all these ingredients were present, plus that little some¬ thing extra, putting the Devils on the doorstep of a G.B.L. championship. Chelsea ' s first two contests had them paired up against both defending league co¬ champions, Somerville and Revere. By first edging the powerful Highlanders 44-42, and next crushing the Patriots 57-29, they wasted no time in establishing their winning ways. After a gruelling schedule, Chelsea placed second in their Greater Boston League action, and a 7-3 record overall. By showing lots of enthusiasm and a big measure of pride, they came within inches and seconds of the imposs¬ ible dream--a G. B. L. title. 128 Co-Captain Elliot Katzman, Captain Steve DePaulo, Head Coach Wally Bavaro, Co-Captain Jim Richards. Outdoor Track The outdoor track team unfortunately suf¬ fered from a necessary ingredient for suc¬ cess, man power. Although the team captured more than their share of the first places, this did not often lead to meet victories, since the opposition with greater balance piled up points through second and third place finishes. However, the wearers of the Red and Black still managed to savour some satisfying mo¬ ments. A heartbreaking one point loss to pow¬ erful Revere was disappointing, yet had a morale boosting effect. In the final meet determination, pride, and ability all came together in a smashing victory over traditional rival, Everett, by a score of 81 to 50. Looking back on the season, Co-Captains Mark Feldman and Harvey Steinberg along with seniors Steve DePaulo, Jimmy Richard, Danny Staskiewicz, Jay L. Freedman, Robbie Von Handorf, and Elliot Katz man will have many fine moments to recall. 130 133 Just a few short years ago. Cross Country was an obscure and neglected sport. Compared to the prestige and popularity of football and basketball, it took a lowly back seat. It could be said that few, if any of the athletic follow¬ ing of Chelsea High School sports actually knew just what Cross Country was all about. Through a sound program of summer train¬ ing, practice and dedication, opponents of the Red Devil harriers began to take notice. Vic¬ tories became more frequent. With them came more recognition and acclaim and still greater pride among the team members. Now finally established as a power, Chel¬ sea High ' s running Devils are still reaping the fruits of success. Under the leadership of Captain Steve DePaulo and Co-Captains Jimmy Richard and Mark Feldman, the team has pro¬ duced the winningest record in the school’s history. This year ' s combined total of fourteen wins versus only two losses is even more im¬ pressive than it looks. At their best they were a team well capable of challenging any oppo¬ nent in this area. Chelsea Cross Country has now made its distinct impression on the record books as well as on our High School Athletics. Among the unfortunates were the SKYDIVING CLUB. Of the original 26 mem¬ bers, the two survivors were under heavy sedation and were unable to sit for a club picture at the time. The GRAVEDIGGERS CLUB was busy caring for the remaining remains of the SKYDIVING CLUB and therefore, was also unavailable for the picture taking. Our efficient TRAIL-BLAZING CLUB never returned from their September hike through Chelsea and the RESCUE CLUB, which was sent to find them, sent postcards from Death Valley. As for our EXTREMISTS CLUB, all ' of its members were indefinitely sus¬ pended from school for setting the girls ' pinochle team ' s uniforms on fire. The PINOCHLE CLUB girls, who were wearing the uni¬ forms at the time, suffered third-degree burns and immediately changed their title to the SKIN-GRAFTING CLUB. Fortunately, we were able to capture two of our newest clubs plus the industrious Beacon Staff. Turn the page and see the mem¬ bers doing their thing. 143 What About the One The newest of all C. H. S. clubs is the Fishing Club. Its members include: President Thomas Hogan, Marie Mur¬ ray, Mike Wilcox, Debbie McGauley, Steven Whalen, Theresa Moran, David Satorelli, Karen Esseichick, Mike Zul- lo, Susan Buckley, Donna Harvey, Dru- sella Welch, and Jean Gulizia. This eager group of y oung Isaak Waltons spent the year learning the techniques of this sport: baiting a hook without mangling the worm and casting a line without catching themselves in the pants just to name a few. Their skill was practiced on weekend trips to Chel¬ sea Creek, G. E. Bridge, and similar fishing resorts. This infant club is a welcome addition to the list of exciting clubs at Chelsea High School. The Fishing Club getting ready to haul in the big ones. 144 That Got Away? The membership in the Hat Club swelled as the year went along. It seems students were passionately interested in learning the proper techniques of wear¬ ing a hat, as demonstrated by the famous but secre¬ tive ' ' Mad-Hatter’ ' --who prefers to remain nameless at this point. The club conducted several seminars in camou¬ flaging, decorating, storing, feeding, and watering your hat. Their main event of the year, a gay get-to¬ gether in the recreation lounge across the street, was well attended with the members wearing their most prized hats. After the usual games and festivi¬ ties, the famous Mexican Hat Dance was performed. It seems the participants had become so attached to their hats though, that they didn ' t put them on the floor in the usual manner. The Mad-Hatter, who bet that they would, was forced to eat his hat and that ' s why he ' s hatless in the picture. 147 Beacon n TrfW r a v w B fj . 1 IT. BACK LEFT TO RIGHT: Sherman Dubin, Alex Riseman, Dave Sartorelli. The most exciting experience of a student’s life, besides being born with a full set of teeth, is being a member of the Beacon staff. In order to qualify for this honor, a hopeful must have a medical examination and no previous record of nervous breakdowns. The highest position of the yearbook staff is editor. The person who fills this job must have the insensitivity of a corpse. Despite the re¬ quirements, we picked Karen Esseichick. The remaining members are divided into three groups: the Writing Staff, whose require¬ ments include writing English fluently and pass¬ ing the Rhinehart method; the Layout Staff, which crops and arranges the pictures, must have ex¬ pertise in the handling of a ruler and should have a pretty good idea of how to draw a straight line; the Business Staff is responsible for bringing in the ads and wellwishers. Failure means finding their names on the In Memoriam page. Last, but by all means not least, there are the photo¬ graphers. The two on our staff have acquired such fame that they’ve put the little old man on Fourth Street to shame. Under the leadership of Sumner Bloom, who specializes in used jokes and posing people for candids, the Beacon Staff, nerves frazzled, yet with heads held high, met their deadlines (the most hated word ever uttered). Ab out 75 couples, attired in their best finery, danced the night away, only pausing to enjoy a delect¬ able roast beef dinner. The beautifully decorated Riviera Suite re¬ verberated with the rock and slow sounds of the day, as the dancers crowded the floor to boogie. An added attraction was the unscheduled performance of the Gay Squad who did their terpsichorean interpretation of that old favorite LOVE. They were loudly applauded and appre¬ ciated by their classmates. At the stroke of midnight, the Cinderellas and their Prince Charmings wiped a tear from their faces as the last strains of the music were heard in the background. • ‘wt M f Af b ■ jot ' V t fi £ Ok f V Ik 1 A ' Wk r-f PJSm| wvn mm H ML jfffK -■ bi J J OOO 1906 Revisited ism-mm ■ s How can the 1974 Yearbook forget the Great Chelsea Fire of Sunday, October 14, 1973? It was just after 4:00 p. m. on Octob¬ er 14, that the relative calm of a Sunday afternoon was inter¬ rupted by the sounds of fire sirens. Before long many more horns could be heard screaming through the city as the smoke in the southern sky began to spread and become ever darker. An area in the southwest portion of the city was on fire and that blaze was raging out of control. It was only a matter of hours before flames had completely gutted more than twenty city blocks. When all was over there was miraculously not a single in¬ stance of death and relatively few injuries during this catastro¬ phe. However, hundreds of people were made homeless, many others were out of business, and there were millions of dollars in damage. The victims of Chelsea’s second great conflagration were aided by members of this years’ graduating class, who gave freely of their time and effort. Now we are confident that Chelsea will rise from the ashes to again become a viable and progressive community. Miscellaneous Mug Shots 168 Stares 170 Hallway Hi-Jinks ■wl •% . ’ fr J J rw. The varsity squad was hard put to keep up with the deceptively talented teachers; including Vicious Vinny Apruzzese, Cheap Shot Joe Mauro, and Shelly the Rock¬ et Greenglass. The ruggedly fought fray ended in a 5-5 tie. First star went to Ed Connolly for his four goal performance, and second and third stars went to Ed Rosa and Stu Fineberg for managing to skate without the aid of the boards. 173 G — A —!
