Ridge Superintendent As Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Ridge has done outstanding work, dis¬ playing leadership qualities that do not bend under pressure. Even though he is in a position of authority which requires much of his time, he is always available to discuss problems with both the stu¬ dents and the faculty. Chelsea is fortun¬ ate in having such a capable and dedicat¬ ed educator as its superintendent. Administrative assistant, Mrs. Mary E. Sullivan, has proven herself a valuable member of the superintendent ' s team. Her knowledge in the areas of finances, personnel, and school services has helped everyone associated with the school system. 5 Mrs. B. Claire Forbes Secretary Mr. Brown Master Mr. Brown, a fine and respected man, whose friendly atti¬ tude, warmth, and enthusiasm are shared by both student body and faculty alike, has truly demonstrated his capabili¬ ties as master of our high school. Mr. Margolis Headmaster Mr. Margolis, an energetic and dedicated admin¬ istrator, has served as headmaster of Chelsea High School for five years. The Class of 1972 wishes him success in the coming years, and may he strive for and achieve those goals which will continue Chelsea High’s greatness. Alone “When I ' m alone — the words tripped off his tongue As though to be alone were nothing strange. When I was young, he said; when I was young . . . I thought of age, and loneliness, and change. I thought how strange we grow when we ' re alone, And how unlike the selves that meet and talk. And blow the candles out, and say goodnight. Alone . . . The word is life endured and known. It is the stillness where our spirit walks And all but inmost faith is overthrown. — Siegfried Sassoon 11 Yesterday, All my troubles seemed so far away; Now it looks as though they ' re here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday. Paul McCartney Our intellectual and active powers increase with our affection. — Emerson We live forward, but we understand backward. — Hegel Those were the days my friend, We thought they ' d never end. We ' d sing and dance forever and a day. We ' d live the life we choose . . . Paul McCartney 11M i H0t ..± 2 2 It 18 19 • V mm 20 How many years can a mountain exist before it is washed to the sea? H. S. Football Season 1971-72 Hey Lucifer, what was that you were saying about the footballteam? Yeah, too bad Tech beat us, but wasn’t Breau’s touchdown something else? Yeah, they shoulda credited his helment with the interception. Aw- w-w-w. Hey, is it true that everyone was calling the Medford game the Chel¬ sea Massacre? That Cuniff is some kind of football player, huh Lucifer? Too bad he doesn ' t live in Chelsea. Hey, pass that goatskin bag down this way! Lucifer wants to know if it ' s water, he ' s thirsty. Yeah, it ' s water, Lucifer, it ' s water! Hey, I didn ' t see the Revere and Somerville games — what were the scores? Don ' t ask! Don ' t ask! I thought we were supposed to beat Somerville. Hey, those Northy Quincy cheerleaders were all right, huh? Their football team wasn’t bad either. Hey Lucifer! Go easy with that goat¬ skin bag! Against Malden we scored, didn ' t we? Yeah, 8 points, trouble was they scored more points. You ' re not giving Chelsea enough credit, they were good in the sec¬ ond half! Yeah, but Malden won. Yeah, but even the Chelsea Record said the team had more spirit. Spirits? No, spirit! Hey Lucifer, pretty good water in that bag, huh? Quincy did all right against the Devils. So did everybody else we played. Yeah, but we scored 16 points — the best we did all season! Hey, any truth to the rumor that they subbed the Pop Warner kids during the second half of the Quincy game? Boy, everybody ' s a critic when the team loses, right Lucifer? The English game was the biggest disappointment to me. I made a bet we ' d win. So what happened? We got bombed! This doesn ' t really seem like the Thanksgiving game. Naw, but the crowd ' s pretty big. I really think Chelsea ' s up for this game. Hey! Will ya look at Chelsea handling that ball! We just might score the first touchdown! C ' mon Chelsea! Aw! Everett ' s got the ball now. Don ' t lose hope, it ' s only 8 to 0. Keep the faith, Chelsea High! Hey, get me a cup of coffee — I wanna watch the half-time show. It sure is cold today, huh Lucifer? Well, I guess we can forget about this game. Aw, shaddup! Chelsea ' s got the whole second half to score. Don ' t count on it. Brother, that Everett coach is merciless! Why doesn ' t he take out the first team? Why won ' t he at least let Chelsea get one lousy touchdown? Hey! The goatskin bag is empty! Yeah and I bet I know where most of it went, cause Lucifer looks kinda sick. The game ' s over, do ya wanna do it? Sure. One, two, three . . ., Just wait till next year! Hey, what was that guy Lucifer doing with a pitchfork? You ' re worried about the pitchfork — what about those horns that were sticking outta his red cap? 120 r o s s Kneeling: Robert Lambright, Daniel McKay, Paul Eaves, Richard De Paulo, Roland Jennex, John Rogendorf, Standing: Coach Bar¬ ry Dwyer, Robert DeStefano, Tony Taraskiewicz, Jay Freedman, John Manning, Stephen DePaulo. While walking the streets of Chelsea one day I saw bright red uniforms just approach¬ ing, and then zooming past me. I wondered what they could have been — roadrunners on a course of destruction? When a straggler went by, I realized with relief that it had been Chel¬ sea ' s cross-country team. These fine, fleet-footed, fast-flying fellows were led through the 1971 season by Captain Richard DePaulo. The other members were: Senior Chris Athas; Juniors — Daniel McKay, John Manning, Tony Taraskiewicz, Paul Eaves, and Robert Lambright; Sophomores — Steve DePaulo, Roland Jennex, Robert De- Stephano and Jay L. Freedman. J. Barry Dwyer did well in his initial year of coaching with two victories. Cross Country has been plagued by the reputation it has gained of not being a specta¬ tor sport. Cheerleaders could be stationed at different points of the running distance and cheer their boys on to victory. Bands could be entertaining the fans at the finish line. When the winner came into sight, the band could swing into The Impossible Dream. With the approach of the other runners they could play Didn ' t We Almost Make It This Time? A laurel wreath could be placed upon the winner ' s noble brow as he paraded around in glory. Such goings-on would give the cross-country team as much of a circus atmosphere as is present in all other spectator sports, and with this its much earned recognition. !22 ' Mp fcjHw ! | i marrym ■ f MiSh §§r£gSfr. ,y Ah 1 1 K.% 1 ■ -- : lll sfcl ►MIS msrZk- - ■ «p, ‘ USeI lf| % iBMt- V m £ P Hockey m Hockey is perhaps the fastest sport in the world. There is never a dull moment. This year ' s C.H.S. Hockey team proved this once again. Whenever they took the ice, excite¬ ment reigned supreme. Whether it was one of Dan O ' Brien ' s length of the ice rushes or Jim Bagley ' s hard slap shot, the Devils were an exciting bunch to watch. The Devils played hard and hit harder. And each event has a branch of its own Thus, the more branches you have, The fuller has been your one human life The richer has been your soul. The celebrants enjoyed a scrumptious eight-course meal and danced to the bubbling sounds of the band. Gaiety reigned supreme during this initial event of the class ' social season. The couples who frolicked the evening away will reminisce about these pleasant memories. 162 1 jM H Student Government Student Government Day, a tradition at Chelsea High, is an event which is eagerly awaited each year. Students play the roles of our city officials. For one day these young people attempt to run the city government in their own naive and idealis¬ tic way. Not only do these V.I.P. ' s have the honor of being hosted by the city officials, but they also enjoy their new images. But woe to these students, for like Cinderella they must soon shed their formal garb in order to return the every day routine of high school.
