Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1971 volume:

BEACON 1971 CHELSEA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Chelsea, Massachusetts We were in the midst of a power failure one night, and the only means of rec¬ reation we could find was an old and battered transistor radio. We huddled close together to hear the broadcaster’s voice, for the volume was barely a whisper. Al¬ though we normally would have preferred doing something else, we somehow enjoyed listening to the radio together in the darkness. Suddenly the broadcaster’s voice faded completely away; and no matter how much we banged the radio, we could not bring back the sound. We had finally given up, when the voice unex¬ pectedly returned and filled the room with music. At first we were startled, but then we turned down the volume and sat by the radio again. Soon we heard the voice of an announcer: “Welcome to Memory Lane, the show that warms your heart and brings tears to your eyes. Tonight we shall recall those sentimental years that we spent in school by visiting a small suburban high school in . . .” Because of a burst of static, we never did find out the name of the city, but who knows? The city might have been Chelsea. Ridge Superintendent of Schools To the Members of the Class of 1971: Congratulations to the members of the grad¬ uating Class of 1971! The pages of this year’s Beacon recount the happenings and associations of the past three years. There are now new pages of life to be written by each of you in whatever area you seek to fol¬ low. I have every confidence in our youth and, despite the troubled times in which we five, I know that you will meet your obligations and responsibilities in preserving and in improving the great free society with which our country has been blessed. My most sincere wishes to you for continued success and happiness. Administrative assistant, Mrs. Mary E. Sullivan, is in charge of all pertinent in¬ formation in the entire school system. Her knowledge and experience are very essential in the efficient administration of our schools. 24 Nathan T. Margolis Headmaster My sincere congratulations to the graduates of the Class of 1971! To those young men and women who have successfully completed their high school requirements in these days of stress and turmoil, a special commendation is to be added. For with all the emphasis placed on our personal liberties and freedom, educating the student is still Chelsea High School’s ultimate aim. You, the Class of 1971, have accomplished that goal, and are now better prepared to face the further challenges of higher education and vocational training. My best wishes to you for success in your indi¬ vidual endeavors. Edward V. Brown, Master To you, the graduates of “71” go my sincerest best wishes and congratulations. There will be many new and difficult challenges which I know you will handle with utmost care and conviction. Do not let establishment mediocrity prohibit you from seeking out new goals. Turn on your ideas and make them glow!!! The future of the world is in your hands; make the most of it!!! Let the Decade of the 70’s be studded with your accom¬ plishments. 25 wmtmmi m mm Mmt W lV%«B t xivv SV 1 Miss B. But add an ice-filled rink and a determined Chelsea High hockey team, and you’ve got championship action. Led by coaches James Stafford and Robert Meehan, captain “Skeeter” Arsenault, and co-captains “Goober” McBride and Albie Caldarone, the Red Devils set the ice on fire twice a week at the Boston Arena. • • ■ 112 ■T ■- 113 ‘km, • • Basketball First row: Co-captains Gary Zardas, Richard Halas Second row: Tony Taraskiewicz, Scott Bial, Sal LaBella, Paul Kanter, James Wine Third row: Coach Arnold Goodman, Gregory Lee, Michael Matrinko, Eric Shuman, Dennis Murray, Bruce Glazer. 114 115 Winning isn’t everything, the old maxim goes. The Red Devils certainly didn’t have an abundance of wins, but they did have plenty of everything else. Spirit and determination were never lacking. Co-captains Gary Zardas and Richard Halas provided most of the scoring punch, and coach Arnold Good¬ man instructed the boys in the finer points of the game. 116 Track As usual, the thorough training program of Coach Bernard Berenson and his assistant, Anthony Bavaro, inspired our team with confidence for another tough season of Greater Boston League Competition. Co-Captains Bruce Glazer and Steve Bachelor were determined to break into the win column. Despite tremendous odds against them, the Red Devils have always known how to give an excellent account of them¬ selves. The many hours of practice were justly re¬ warded at the last meet of the year, when the Red Devil harriers soundly trounced Everett. Co-Captains Scott Bial and John Servideo turned in consistent performances, and Coach Bernard Beren- son kept our spirits high when the victories were not coming. Next year, hopefully, will be better than ever. Coach Joe Bevere, assisted by Co-Captains Frank Grafton and Dennis Murray, is sure to provide excel¬ lent leadership for our boys. We will have many veterans from last year’s squad, which gave us our best record in years. We should have solid hitting, speed on the basepaths, and an excellent chance for a victorious season. Front Row: Paul Sprachlin, Merrill Goldstein, Paul Dwyer, Ronald Zaggari, Mark Glinner, Richard Carbone, Fred Olivero, Kenny Fay, Joey Paddadino, Jerry Capone Back Row: Thomas Keating, David Gordon, Sal LaBella, John Servideo, Dennis Murray, Frank Wilson, Eric Shuman, Francis Grafton, Richard Halas, Coach Bevere. For every time that our boys lose, our girls win. Co-captains Gwen Tyre and Lorraine Harvey have led the team to its second consecutive winning season. Miss Beverly Corwin, with her spirited half-time talks, has instilled in our team both the desire to win and play fairly. 124 SP . . IR . . IT . . . That’s spirit, let’s hear it . . . L.: Beacon: M.L.: Chairman Lerner, the Audio-Visual Club is one of the anonymous clubs of the school. Why? Lo-o-ok, if we weren’t around, you’d know it. We run all the projection and sound machines in the building. We keep things going. Without us, you couldn’t see the trees from the forest. So the club is vital to the smooth functioning of the school? That’s right. We keep the school in the ball park. Front row: Thomas Keating, Robert Melesciuc. Back row: Michael Matrinko, Mark Lerner, Mr. Roman Pucko, faculty advisor; Bruce Lawson, Dennis Ring. Dramatics Beacon: Miss President, there have been many dramatic events this year. Has your club been re¬ sponsible for them? Club Pres: Well, not really. My club is interested in the dream of the theater, not dramatic events. We hope to attend many movies and plays, including the Shake¬ speare Festival in the spring. Beacon: I understand. Are there plans to exhibit the talents of our budding stars and starlets? Club Pres: Yes, but contrary to the rumor, our play is not going to be “Hair” or “O’ Calcutta.” What¬ ever it is, we hope to have a record run. Beacon: Thank you, Miss President. Absent: President Joel Sugarman Beacon: Is it true that you have an aspiring Louis Armstrong among you? Answer: No, none of us is shooting for the moon. Beacon: In reference to the band, is your policy “the more the merrier” or “too many musicians spoil the music?” Answer: As you know, the Band of C.H.S. has long been known for its quality: anything which will preserve this quality, we will do. 131 Beacon 1971 “Let’s get to work, Let’s get to work . . . Pres: First and foremost, the lunch program. The majority agrees that the best meal is tuna fish, but a loudly dissenting minority favors hot dogs. Beacon: What about matters of world importance? Pres: What could be more important than our stomachs? Beacon: I agree, but did you know that, actually, the mind craves food and not the stomach. Pres: That’s ridiculous. My stomach always tells me when I’m hungry. Beacon: It’s really your mind! Pres: It’s my stomach! Beacon: Your mind! Pres: Look, let’s not get into a debate about this. Beacon: That’s fine with me. German: All of our members help support German industry, as all good Ger¬ mans do. We help consume one of the country’s “cooler” or shall I say “draughtier” products. Beacon: In these days of Women’s Liberation, it seems strange that all your members are boys. Did you post a sign reading: “No girls allowed!” German: Of course we did not stoop to such a measure. But frankly, I feel that the sign: “Enter at your own risk!” did scare away some prospective female members. 137 GAT Front row: Treasurer Thomas Keating, Vice-President Larry Kaplan, President Jerry Levine, Dennis Ring. Guidance Director, Eli Richmond. 140 Latin Club Back Row: Susan Stec, Cathy Rosenfield, Francine Carey, Dabbie Albano, Jo-Ann Charak, Miss Glover Front Row: Jeffrey Engber, Richard Band Beacon: M iss Glover, I’ve heard many reports comparing the Latin Club Saturnalias to the Roman orgies. Would you care to comment? Latin: I refuse to answer on grounds that it may incriminate me. Tell me, is Latin really a dead language? Of course not, Julius Caesar proved that in his speech at our last meeting. To what do you attribute the sudden desire of students to become members of the Latin Club? The group, formed last year, consists of the 3 classes. We meet with the School Committee and try to bring about school reforms. We’ve heard a lot about the “silent majority.” Do you profess to be a part of it? Our efforts brought about changes in the dress code and lunch program. This is hardly the work of a silent group. 147 Beacon: Spanish is one of the live languages. How does your club reflect the vitality of the language you represent? I’ve really got to run. ’Bye! 149 Thanksgiving Rally For the first time in history, due to unforeseen circumstances, the annual Thanks¬ giving rally was held outdoors at the Chelsea Memorial Stadium. Braced by the cool, fresh air, our chants of “Beat Everett!” rose to the skies. Just as high were the spirits of the football players and the Pep Club as they demonstrated to the cheerleaders the proper way to turn on a crowd. At the end of the program Capt. Paul Jones presented Coach Chubby Tiro with a trophy of appreciation, and the exuberance filled the stadium. 150 Student Government Day It has been said that the youth of today are irre¬ sponsible, and too, that they are not well prepared to take over tomorrow’s world. These are some of the things which we disproved on Student Government Day, when we did our best to show that we can de¬ velop into excellent leaders. The dinner at the Elks Hall was delicious, and ev¬ eryone had an enjoyable time.
