For Reference Not to be taken from this library t I Down went Alice, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again. small child unsuspectingly opens his eyes. He does not know he must scorn others whose race, creed, or color differ from his own. He does not know he must conceal his true feelings. He does not know he must master the arts of hypocrisy or mendacity. His education has begun. It is more than the study of language and nature. It is an endless process which teaches him to reason — as society reasons. He must be trained to adjust to life. His mind is being molded. In recent years, youth have grown to find themselves in a “wonderland” where actions seem pointless or stupid; thoughts, senseless or dull. Following the path of the white rabbit, the path of generosity and candor, has become a rugged challenge. Too often youth have given up. Too often they have joined the rat race. This rebellious generation has refused to conform. The youth of today have refused to allow the inhabitants of the “wonderland” to warp their minds. This generation is determined to follow the white rabbit out of the “wonderland”. 4 6 4 71 r 7E f 1 i ' 1 | Jk g i ? 4 L it 3 . i i PIJ ft Ji ffl j M| 231 . Ridge Superintendent of Schools To The Members of the Class of 1970: Congratulations! The doors are opening upon a new phase of life for you. Our hopes and our prayers go with you as you step across the threshold into a life of studies, of work, and of responsibilities to your family and to your country. As you look to the future remember your parents, your teachers, and all others who have unselfishly helped you, and be ever mindful that in a free society with privilege goes responsibility. May success continue to be yours! Nathan T. Margolis Headmaster It has been my good fortune to have had the co¬ operation and good will of the Class of 1970 for the past three years. In turn, I have done my utmost to help make this one of the best graduating classes in the history of Chelsea High School. In these days of dissent and protest, it is reward¬ ing to have been an integral part of a class that believed in respect for one’s parents, teachers, and fellow-classmates. It is my earnest hope that the members of the Class of 1970 will prosper and succeed in their in¬ dividual endeavors. Godspeed! Edward V. Brown Master I wish to congratulate each graduate and for¬ ward my sincere praise to your self sacrificing parents. The attainment of your high school diploma and what it represents was made possible by your co¬ operative effort with an understanding and devoted faculty. I urge each one of you to promote more understanding in your daily living and hope every¬ one will be an active, participating member of a dynamic and challenging society. 20 Administration Assistants Highly trained, efficient, and very presentable, Mrs. Mary Sullivan, administrative assistant, is of dis¬ tinct service in the smooth functioning of the entire school system. This proved to be an evening of flowers, gowns, dancing and unforgettable memories. The music was provided by Frank Pedi and his orchestra, and Greek dances were taught to the students. The highlight of the evening was the selection of a splendid court with Donna Levy as Queen. 37 Thanksgiving Rally Rousing cheers by the cheerleaders and the majorettes, skits by the pep club and football team, and spirited selections by Mr. Ottavi’s colorful band stimu¬ lated the enthusiasm of the student body during the Thanksgiving Rally preceding our annual Chelsea-Everett game. Especially when the burly mem¬ bers of our football team appeared dressed as cheerleaders and majorettes, the auditorium rang with howling, whistling and applause. For spirit and un¬ quenchable optimism, this year’s Thanksgiving Rally will be remembered as the most enjoyable assembly of our senior year. 38 Christmas — Chanukah Program CHRISTMAS-CHANUKAH PROGRAM Nothing so heartwarming to the ecumeni¬ cal spirit as our Christmas-Chanukah pro¬ gram. Beautiful Christmas Carols by the band, under the direction of Dr. Ottavi, put the audience in a festive mood, while ancient Chanukah songs by the Glee Club under the leadership of Mr. Toltz added a touch of nostalgia. Both moods imparted to the audi¬ ence a spirit of brotherhood and love. Thus filled with the best of all possible human feelings we adjourned for our annual Christ¬ mas-New Year’s vacation. 42 Dinner-Dance The social life of our senior year was enhanced by a dinner dance held at the Chalet D’Or on January 23, 1970. Seventy-five couples attended, enjoyed a hearty meal and danced to the music of Utopia. Everybody present felt it was a most enjoyable and memorable evening. 44 45 Student Government Day ALDERMEN Steven Lee, Mayor Standing Jeffrey Botman, Stephen Woodland, Kenneth Fay, Charles Sherman, Seated Joanne Lee, Carol Ann Bowen, Janis Segal, Absent Richard Gallo, Leo McCarthy Student Government Day ' m ■Of u Ipi ffrli l JHk. Under the leadership of Mr. Leader and Mr. Berenson, the Chelsea High Seniors took over the offices of the city on February 25, 1970. After a tour of the Chelsea Public Library with Mr. Minandakis, Head Librarian, and a luncheon served by the Chelsea Lodge of Elks, the various student-officials really went to work. All who witnessed their accomplishments will have to admit that in all its history the City of Chelsea has never been run so smoothly and efficiently as on this one glorious day. 46 Class Officers President — Charles Sherman Vice-President - Francis Nugent James Baroosman! visor V in cent Appruzzee, Advisor Angela Zullo, Secretary Angela DeFelice, Treasurer ■■ Audio-Visual Club V 4 M Audio-Visual Club The boys in the Audio-Visual Club, guided by Mr. Roman Pucko, are very helpful to the teachers in running filmstrips and obtaining the necessary equipment to make their classes more informative and enjoyable. And the moral of that is — “Oh, ’tis love, that makes the world go round!” Somebody said that it’s done by everybody minding their own business! Ah well! It means much the same thing. And the moral of that is — “Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of them¬ selves.” And the moral of that is — “The more there is of mine, the less there is of yours.” And the moral of that is — “Be what you would seem to be” — or, if you’d like to put it more simply — “Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise. “That’s nothing to what I could say if I chose,” the Duchess replied, in a pleasant tone. 71 o Football Co-Captains: Billy Caputo, Billy Moore, Barney Nugent Anthony Bravaro; Robert Fee; Joseph O’Keefe; Head Coach Chubby Tiro; Mac Singleton; Arnold Goodman; Robert Tiro; Tony Sarno. 74 FOOTBALL This year’s C.H.S. football team played against some of the best teams in Massachusetts. (As that is rather a hard word, I will just explain to you how it was done. They had a large canvas bag, which tied up at the mouth with strings; into this they slipped the guinea pig, head first, and then sat upon it.) o ' (. yl. A First, however, she waited for a few minutes to see if she was going to shrink any further: she felt a little nervous about this; “for it might end, you know,” said Alice to herself, “in my going out all together, like a candle. I wonder what I should look like then?” And she tried to fancy what the flame of a candle looks like after the candle is blown out, for she could not remember ever having seen such a thing. But it’s no use now,” thought poor Alice, “to pretend to be two people! Why, there’s hardly enough of me left to make one respectable person! Oh dear! I’d nearly forgotten that I’ve got to grow up again! Let me see — how is it to be managed? 153 “I almost wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit-hole — and yet — and yet — it’s rather curious, you know, this sort of life! I do wonder what can have happened to me! When I used to read fairy tales, fancied that kind of thing never hap¬ pened, and now here I am in the middle of one! There ought to be a book written about me, that there ought! And when I grow up, I’ll write one — but I’m grown up now,” she added in a sorrowful tone: “at least there’s no room to grow up any more here” In Memoriam George E.
