For Reference ! • BEACON CHELSEA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Foreword Education is a life-long process. Schooling is only part of this life process, but it acts as a guide to the rest. When we understand that what we are taught in high school helps form our values, we realize how important it is that this schooling should aim us in the right direction. Many feel that society today is aiming in the wrong direction. Too much importance is attached to material things. Too many in our society are interested in power, looking upon knowledge only as.a means of attaining this power. However, there are other values far more important than power. We feel, as our school motto says, Wisdom is greater than knowledge; character greater than power. 13 The Highest Proof Of Virtue Is To Possess Boundless Power Without Abusing It. — Thomas Babington, Lord Macaulay FACULTY Administration John F. Ridge Superintendent Superintendent of Schools, John F. Ridge, is rec¬ ognized as an outstanding leader in the field of ed¬ ucation. Despite the many pressures of his position, Mr. Ridge has always made himself available to dis¬ cuss any problems with both students and faculty. He has accomplished a great deal in the short time he has been superintendent and our school system is bound to prosper under his guidance. Chelsea is indeed fortunate to have a man of such caliber as the superintendent of its schools. Nathan T. Margolis Headmaster Chelsea High School is proud of its capable and dedicated Headmaster, Mr. Margolis. Mr. Margolis knows the value and purpose of education and is constantly striving to modernize the curriculum and raise our educational standards. He has already accomplished much in his term of office as Headmaster, and will no doubt accomplish even more in the future. Student body and faculty all unite in saying: More power to you, Mr. Margolis! 18 Edward V. Brown Master Warmth, understanding and congeniality are only a few of the words which can be used to express our feelings for Mr. Edward V. Brown. These qualities added to his proven competence, make him an asset to our school. Both students and faculty can feel free to consult him on any matter at any time. The Class of 1969 feels fortunate in having the guidance of such a capable master at Chelsea High School. Mrs. Mary Sullivan Administrative Assistant As Administrative assistant and clerk of the school committee, Mrs. Sullivan is a most valuable asset to our school system. Her knowledge in matters of personnel, finance, and school services contributes greatly to our well being as students in Chelsea High School. 19 Department Chairmen Emmanuel D ' Ambrosio Commercial Meyer Gootkin Foreign Languages Maurice Greenfield Aaron Kipnes Max Leader English Science Social Studies Roman F. Welch Business Law George Wood Woodwork May We, Cod Helping Us, Be Part Of The Answer, Not Part Of The Problem. — Peter Marshall September, 1966, signified the arrival of about 300 sophomores at Chelsea High School. As naive, unsophisticated adolescents, we were apprehensive about our unfamiliar surroundings. But after several weeks, we became accustomed to the indifference of the seniors, the remarks of the juniors, and the hot lunches in the cafeteria. Adding to all this was the excitement of a fire drill that turned out to be the real thing. We somehow managed to survive our first year, and we returned to Chelsea High as confident and adjusted juniors. Our first decision involved the selection of class rings. They may not be the most expensive, but they will always be an important part of our happy memories at Chelsea High. Our next task was the election of capable junior class officers: Bill Chiaradona, President; Gwen Robinson, Vice President; Jane Fitzpatrick, Secretary; and Joanne Evans, Treasurer. They all carried out their respective jobs admirably and made our junior year a great success. Finally the big event of the year arrived — the Junior Prom. Through the unselfish acts of the many people involved, our Junior Prom was enjoyed by everyone who attended. 30 At last, in the fall of 1968, we entered good old Chelsea High for the last time as a class; we were seniors, the cream of the crop. Once again we elected responsible officers: Wayne Mahon, President; Dickie Taraskiewicz, Vice President; Donna Burley, Secretary; and Linda Juliano, Treasurer. We now look to the future with mixed emotions. We also wait excitedly for the completion of our great yearbook, possibly a dinner dance, a variety show, and of course, student government day. Some students wait anxiously for the fall and college, another new experience. Others anticipate new careers and opportunities in various jobs. Now, as we start counting the days until books are collected, rehearsals begin, and graduation follows, we realize that one chapter of our lives is rapidly closing, but another is just beginning. The knowledge we have acquired, and the friendships we have made will always be with us. Although we will soon be leaving old Chelsea High we are not without wonderful memories. 31 Senior Class Officers Wayne Mahon President Donna Burley Secretary Richard Taraskiewicz Vice-President Linda juliano Treasurer 32 Senior Council First Row; C. The elected officers, under the guidance of Mr. Vincent Appruzzese, senior class advisor, were responsible for organizing and conducting our class activities for the senior year. It was an exciting year filled with many pleasant experiences. 142 Thanksgiving Rally On Wednesday, November 27, the students of C.H.S. assembled for the annual Thanksgiving rally. For the class of “69 this year ' s rally was one of the best it had ever seen. Throughout the program the students displayed boundless enthusiasm and optimism, engendering high hopes for a victory over Everett. The talented soloists, the boy and girl cheerleaders, the majorettes, and the girl masters of the gridiron provided the audience with much amusement and laughter. Most important of all, the rally inspired the Red Devils to go out and “Beat Everett in spirit and good sportsmanship, if not in touchdowns. 144 Variety Show Variety is the spice of life, and there was plenty of it in the production put on by the Chelsea High School students in March, 1969. Under the direction of Mrs. Joyce Sartorelli and ably assisted by Mr. James Barooshian, the participants were only too willing to display their talents, and the results were highly amusing and entertaining. If there was any doubt before, there is none now that there ' s no business like show business. 146 Mayor and School Committee For the fourteenth consecutive year, under the watchful eyes of Mr. Leader, Mr. Berenson, and Mr. Barooshian, the seniors of Chelsea High took over the reigns of our city government on February 12, 1969. After a guided tour of the Chelsea Public Library by Mr. Minandakis, the student officials were sworn into their respec¬ tive offices by City Clerk John P. Dalis. Fortified with a hearty meal served by the Chelsea Lodge of Elks, the various officers eagerly assumed their respective duties. Let it never be said that February 12,1969, was not the most efficient and remarkable day in the history of our city govern¬ ment.
