Upper right: Mr. James Barooshian. “The ancient and the modern.” Center left: Mr. Bernard Berenson. “Let’s see how fast you can run the mile.’ Lower right: Mr. William Quinn. “We caught him smiling.” In order to understand the present we must gain knowledge of the past. We must become acquainted with the changing world around us. We must learn the laws which help us to live with each other in peace and harmony. Helping us to reach our goals are the teachers of the Social Science Department under the chairmanship of Mr. Max Leader. Instructing us in U. S. History, World History, Economics, Con¬ sumer Education, Business Law, Problems of Democracy, Civics and Sociology, our teachers develop our minds and pre¬ pare us to go on with our rich New England Heritage by con¬ tinuing our education in college or in the world of affairs. Upper left: Mr. Irving Schwartz. “It melts in your mouth, not in your hands.” 27

S dthing new at Chelsea High this year is a program called Distributive Education. This is a cooperative learning program in which the students study until noon, and spend the after¬ noon at part-time jobs. Under the able leadership of Mr. Chris Belisis, these boys and girls study English, Social Studies, and business subjects such as salesmanship, merchandising, Retailing, Advertising, and Commercial arithmetic. After school hours each student reports to an assigned training station where he works under a store supervisor and the periodic ob¬ servation of Mr. Belisis. This program is a wonderful opportunity for students to obtain the skills needed in the business world while they are still in school.
