Left: Mr. Myer Gootkin, head of the Language Department. “One more step and I’ll push the button.’’ Right: Mrs. Frances Montesano. “Yes, they’re real pearls.” Under the direction of Mr. Meyer Gootkin and our able language teachers, the language department of Chelsea High has be- come one of the most progressive in this area. The new lan¬ guage lab is equipped with the most modern facilities: four tape recorders, individual lab booths with microphones, and an extensive supply of tapes in Latin, French, German, and Span¬ ish. The lab, however, is not the only new addition to the department. We also have two new language teachers: “unser neuer Lehrer, “Mr. Norman Finklestein; and Miss Kathleen Hyland, our new Latin teacher. Together with our veteran teachers, they have gained the respect and admiration of our students.

Sandberg, our Math De- partment now offers modern courses which prepare the student for the practical world. Believing that the student must learn how to think independently, the math teachers emphasize the use of reference books as aids to the understanding of a prob¬ lem. The honorary math society, GAT, founded by Mrs. Sand¬ berg in 1951, the math league, and the actuary exams have proven conducive to the study of mathematics. The students who will enter the professions in which mathematics plays a large role are indebted to Mrs. Sandberg, Mr. Fillipone, Mrs. Mack, Mrs. Kaplan, Mr. Sahagian, and Mr. Sarvi.
