Charlie Chelsea, our typical high school student, is waiting to make contact with Agent 001966 from D.O.P.E.S. (Detective Organization for the Protection of Eager Students.) Agent 001966: Psst, Pssst! Are you a GRAD? Charlie Chelsea: Hopefully! Is that you, 001966? Agent 001966: Yes, Charlie. The Central Com¬ mittee of D.O.P.E.S. has sent me to observe an ideal school and follow a typical class through a typical year until graduation. Charlie Chelsea: We’re glad to see you. You can tail me so that you can see the many activities in the school. 001966: O.K. I’ll try to be discreet. Charlie Chelsea: First we will observe the class¬ es and the teachers. 001966: Fine! What is next? Charlie Chelsea: Then we’ll visit some of the clubs and last, we’ll seethe students themselves. 001966: That sounds like a complete tour. When do we start? Charlie Chelsea: Our first rendezvous is at 8:10 a. m. foreword 001966: O.K. Let’s go. HBH headmaster, office staff Mr. James J. Cotter, our very popular headmaster, has served us for five years. We are fortunate in having four high¬ ly qualified guidance counselors to aid us. Mr. Eli Richman, our capable head counselor, is assisted by Miss Adele Revis, Mr. Edward Brown, and Mr. Joseph Moran. Their main function is to help our students choose the future path best suited for that partic¬ ular individual. They are informed of the many job opportunities opened to qualified people. The choice of a college can determine a stu¬ dent’s future. Our guidance counselors assist many students in making the proper choice of a college. Judging by past records, our faith in our guidance counselors is justified. Upper Left: The information that Mr. Eli Richman, head of the Guidance Department, received from this phamphlet may have been of great aid to our students. They endeavor to make English as enjoyable as any elective. Mr. Stewart, our high¬ ly qualified department head hasten very capable teachers. During our high school years, we are exposed to the works of the world’s greatest authors. The effective teaching helps us get the most out of these great works both culturally and academi¬ cally. A proper command of English is an important qualification for any job. Our commercial course English teachers thoroughly prepare our students for their future positions. To take our place properly in society, we must be able to communicate with others. Oral compo¬ sitions and class recitations give us constant practice in the art of conversation. At some time during everyone’s life, it is necessary for one to indulge in written correspondence. The practice we receive at Chelsea Senior High School in writing letters will prove invaluable. The fine training in English received at C.H.S. will be an important factor in future success. Upper Left: Mr. Stewart isn’t really as stem as he looks. Mr. Aaron Kipnes, head of the department, Mr. David Pearlmutter, and Mr. Lawrence Baker instruct pupils in the study of life. Mrs. Arnold Parker and Mr. David Pearlmutter enable stu¬ dents to understand some of the laws concerning the nature and composition of matter. Physics is the forte of Mr. Roman Pucko. Due to the con¬ centrated efforts of our instructors, our students leave Chelsea High School well grounded in the sciences. Upper Right: L-O-O-K! Left: Karen, what are you creating? Lower: He really is not that sweet mathematics Our excellent mathematics department is under Ā the direction of Mrs. Alice B. Sandberg. Chelsea Senior High School offers a complete program of mathematics ranging from Math I to Advanced Math and Calculus. To live in our modern world a rudimentary knowledge of mathematics is necessary. A house¬ wife must have a knowledge of addition and per¬ centage if she is to be a successful shopper. We live in an advanced technological age. Some of the best job opportunities are found in fields related to mathematics. Our advanced courses help prepare us for these jobs. A knowl¬ edge of geometry is essential for an architect or draftsman. In future years the importance of mathematics will increase even more. We will be very thank¬ ful for the mathematics training received at Chelsea High School. Upper: That ' s all there is, there are no more! Lauer: We’re getting all you flag bearers ready for Patriot’s Day. Under the direction of Mr. Myer Gootkin, the Foreign Language Department offers many ex¬ cellent opportunities for students. During a French class, you can hear Mr. Gootkin teaching his students to read French newspapers. Mrs. Montesano’s cheerful Buenos Dias, Clase, and Miss Brandt’s Muy bien is a common sound along the corridor. The Latin classes, under the direc¬ tion of Miss MacArthur, acquire good training in both prose and poetry. Last, but not least, the German pupils led by Mr. Freedman, not only learn the essentials of German, but also absorb much of its history. language 18 Upper Left: Now, John, really! Upper Right: I am your leader. Center: Well, baby face, you tried. Lower: Student Government Day’s very capable adviser. The world decreases in size every day. The many rapid methods of transportation today make it imperative for us to know our neighbors across the sea and the way that their actions affect us. Our Social Science Department under the super¬ vision of Mr. Max Leader acquaints us with others and the events that have made them what they what they are today. Chelsea High School offers World History and World Geography in this area. Economics, Consumer Education, Business Law, Problems of Democracy, United States History and Civics prepare students for the time when they will have the vote. They also prepare the students for the time when they will have to take their place in the civic and social life of a community. Upper Left: And Gina lives here. Here is a vast storehouse of information readily available to all. Mrs. Marie Kennedy, our popular librarian is always willing to help a student in need. Assisted by thirteen capable volunteers, she also helps keep the many paperback books in the school in fine condition. The library is the scene of many school functions, such as club meetings, P.T.A. func¬ tions, and teacher’s meetings. Our librarian helps keep the schedule of club meetings free from conflict. Mrs. Kennedy also gives invaluable instruction in Developmental Reading. Chelsea High School has a library it can well be proud of. The Commercial Department of Chelsea High School continues to open the business world to many of its students. There is a great demand for people with a business education in all fields of work. The Commercial Department ably pre¬ pares students for these jobs. The three main divisions of this department are the Stenographic Course which is mainly concerned with transcription, the Accounting Course in which the students acquire the skills needed to keep accurate books, and the Practical Business Course which trains the students to be¬ come efficient in many office chores. After completing the Commercial Course at Chelsea High, the students are able to face the problems of today’s business world with ease. Upper Left: Mr. D. likes to have his picture taken. Upper: Christine apparently enjoys using that knife. Center: Good food certainly seems to create pretty sm iles. Life today demands people who are physically and mentally fit. Automobiles and other modern conveniences discourage the desire for physical exercise. The people look to the school to supplement the little exercise received in daily life. Miss Reba Painter and Mr. Henry McCarthy help stu¬ dents get the exercise so necessary for good health. There are many sports that are enjoyable as well as healthful that are played in physical edu¬ cation classes at Chelsea High School. These are basketball, line hockey and tennis. We hope that the fine pointers for keeping in shape learned at Chelsea High School will not be quickly forgotten. Carpentry is taught under the dilligent super¬ vision of Mr. Savino Morelli. There are many job opportunities in the field of auto mechanics. Mr. Arthur Hagan prepares the boys for these jobs. Mr. Barnett Freedman instructs students in the proper application of printing techniques. All of these boys will have an excellent foun¬ dation in Manual Training. Chelsea High School will produce some of tomorrow’s best craftsmen. Upper: What’s wrong, Kenny? Center: A situation for Ajax! Lower: Now hold it steady. Upper: Mr. Connolly looks relieved. Lower: Mr. McCarthy has many friends. With the continued prosperity of our times, more people are buying what used to be considered luxuries. One such luxury is an automobile. Be¬ cause of the increasing number of drivers, it is becoming of paramount importance to learn the proper driving methods. Chelsea High School, keeping abreast of the times, has excellent driving instruction courses under Mr. Edward Connolly and Mr. Henry McCarthy. driver education All around us art is present. It is present in nature, in the architecture of our buildings, and in their adornment. However, life can be drab if one does not perceive this beauty. Perception comes with the understanding and appreciation that is received from training. Chelsea High School provides such training in the art classes of Mrs. Ruby. There students learn to use fundamental techniques of art to create things of beauty. Upper: Students, this is the technique I want you to use. Lower: Ten of the High School’s interior decorators. art music Upper: Does the drum sound right, Dr. Ottavi? Lower: What are you appreciating, Charlie? Modem sights and sounds and the daily stress that life presents us leave little time for any appreciation of really beautiful music. Chelsea Senior High School has tried to remedy this situ¬ ation with a course in music appreciation taught by Mr. Alvin Toltz. Others who would not other¬ wise have time for such a course, can learn some of the fine points of music by playing in the band under the direction of Dr. Guido Ottavi. The Beacon due to great efforts of the staff answers this description. The executive committee gathers the material together and as¬ signs various tasks to the editors and staff. The contributing editors assist the copy editors. The Art Staff makes the yearbook be as pleasant to look at as it is to read. The Advertising Staff sees to it that we have the funds to publish. Our typists perform the many secretarial chores that a yearbook involves. Without the very valuable assistance of Mr. Stewart, our advisor, this year¬ book would not have been printed. As has been the custom for the last 11 years, fifty-eight Chelsea High seniors invaded Chelsea City Hall and assumed their respective offices for Student Government Day. The ā€œfortunate fifty-eightā€ were elected by their classmates after an exuberant campaign and a spirited rally during which some interesting sentiments were expressed. March 9, 1966 was the date of the takeover and after a lunch provided by the Chel¬ sea Elks Lodge our officials for-a-day managed the city quite capably. Of course, the real func¬ tionaries were on hand in case their junior coun¬ terparts needed help, but it’s more fun to pretend that they weren’t around and C.H.S. actually did run Chelsea for a day. good goverment day 39 junior council The Junior Council and officers had a very suc¬ cessful year. The main purpose of this club is to show the boys in action that they have their classmates whole-hearted support. The most enjoyable program in which the club participates is the Thanksgiving Day Rally. At this time the football squad is given a chance to loosen up their muscles for the big Chelsea- Everett game. The Honor Society of the Chelsea Senior High School is organized and managed according to the rules of the National Honor Society. Members are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leader¬ ship, character, and service, so it is indeed an 1 accomplishment to belohg to this organization. Under the supervision of Mr. Irving Schwartz, the So ciety has this year engaged in a number of ac¬ tivities, not all intellectual of course, and has shown us that the ā€œbrainsā€ are not lacking in a sense of humor. Although the Honor Society is rather small because of its very high standards, it is still quite an active group. We hope that the Chelsea High School Honor Society can maintain and increase its high level of achievement in the years to come. 48 The Chelsea High School Junior Red Cross Coun¬ cil has had its most successful year in its history. Under the leadership of Richard Voice, President and Susan Kane, Vice-President, the Council has had its most successful enrollment drive to date. During its second year of operation, the club sponsored its own makeup demonstration after having participated in the New England Theater Conference Make-Up Dem¬ onstration at Northeastern University. Sessions on the techniques of walking, sitting, gesturing, and dramatic expression were held in Room 207. In its two short years of existence the Dramatics Club has contributed much to the extra-curricular life of the high school. 55 Gamma Alpha Tau is the Chelsea Senior High School’s honorary mathematics society. Mrs. Alice Sandberg is adviser and Mrs. Rebecca Mack serves as social adviser. Students who ob¬ tain averages of B or better in either College or Academic Course mathematics are admitted to this club. The primary goals of GAT are to promote in¬ terest in the study of mathematics and to bring together students bound by an appreciation of the beauties and significance of mathemati cs. MacArthur, the Latin Club of Chelsea Senior High School is dedicated to the task of better acquainting students with Classic culture and helping them enjoy it. The club acts as an extension of the Latin class; however, this one ā€œafternoon backā€ session the students seem happy to attend. They not only participate in the meetings, but also they can sample ā€œreal Roman goodies .ā€ Indeed, some of the livelier meetings have shown us that Latin is not such a dead language after all. Spanish club The Spanish Club at C.H.S. exists for the purpose of acquainting students with the social, cultural, and economic background of the Spanish speaking countries. The programs feature skits, songs (How can we ever forget cucharacha!) and in¬ formative discussions about our Spanish neigh¬ bors. During the Christmas season, a special program featuring the breaking of the customary pinata is put on. To our disappointment, the refreshments didn’t include tortillas. A stand out among the Foreign language clubs at the Chelsea Senior High School is the French Club. In its monthly meetings, the club discusses subjects of interest to students of French. The Red Devils of the Chelsea High Football team may not have won many games this year, but they did give the opposition a run for its money. There are few places with football spirit like ours, both on and off the bench. It seems odd, that we should remember best not the single win over Medford, but the almost win against Everett. All the excitement leading up to the game the rally, the walk to Everett Stadium, the pre-game tension— makes this game very important. We had tied the game and were driving for a touch¬ down when the first half ended. Of course, Everett may have won, but they never had to fight as hard as they did against us. We give credit where credit is due—to Coach Leo and his fine team. V-?V: basketball Under Coach Fred Garabedian, the basketball team has shown considerable development since last year’s gloomy record of two wins and fifteen losses. Timing and accuracy are emphasized. The purpose of the many hours of daily practice is to train the five-men squad to act as a unit—to have that coordination so necessary to any team. Man- to-man and zone defenses are drilled and redrill¬ ed until every player’s action is a natural reflex. Co-captains Michael Etters and Edward Testa have led the team to a successful season. At the time of this writing, the Chelsea High Five has won five of their first eight games. They must win seven .of the remaining games to qualify for the Tech Tourney. We wish the basketball team luck in co-captain Etters’ words, ā€œMaking that Tourney.ā€ Upper: Well, where is it? Lower: I see you ball, but I am not afraid. Under the direction of coach Joe Bevere, the Che Is ea High baseball team looks forward to a successful season, improving even upon last year’s record of nine wins and five losses. The most important element in any team is the train¬ ing. Almost everyone not on the team realizes that practice in hitting and fielding is important, but what most non-participants fail to grasp is the importance of overall conditioning. Condi¬ tioning is that difference between a mediocre team and a good one. With returning starters, including Captain John Griffin, the Chelsea High baseball team looks forward to a promising sea¬ son in the Greater Boston League. We commend the effort and hard work of the team, and we wish them the best. Upper: First Row, left to’ right: L. Kranetz, D. Nevins, M. Pianka. Second Row: S. Lasota, P. Santagate, L. Marriett, J. Under Head Coach, James Stafford, the hockey team has reflected this new playing maturity in a fine record. Co¬ captains Joseph Massakowski and Arnold Pothier have led the team to a satisfying season. The long hours spent practicing have rewarded us. To estimate the worth of each player is difficult; but it is the combination of all the individuals that make the team what it is. hockey X-- 74 Lower: First Row, left to right: E. Sax, RĀ« Wasak, E. In 1965, under Coach Bernard Berenson, Chelsea enjoyed a great season, winning three games and losing two games. This year we look forward to a stronger, better team under the leadership of co¬ captains Edward Petersen and Donald Wolcott. At Chelsea High, track is the sport that is be¬ coming increasingly popular. The track team will be much larger this year than it has ever been before, increasing the chances for finding better talent for winning more often and by greater mar¬ gins. We salute the Chelsea High School track team for its long hours of practice in all kinds of weather and for its team spirit. A semi-formal Snowball Dance was held at the High School in January. This would not have come about if it were not for our wonder¬ ful advisor, Mr. Apruzzese. Stewart, our adviser, for his aid and advice. Mr. Stewart, during his thirty-five years as head of the English Department and as year¬ book adviser has given an untold number of stu¬ dents an excellent foundation in English. The yearbooks of two generations have passed before him. He has watched many a yearbook grow from a group of ideas to the glossy finished products. Chelsea High’s ā€œMr. Chipsā€ is completing forty- four years of teaching. We wish Mr. Stewart well deserved luck in the future. Upper: I’m proud of all thirty-five yearbooks. Center: Why did I do it. Lower: Good luck in the future. Before you accept that first job . Ā« . Look over your employer as carefully as he does you What’s the Company like anyway? Would I be proud to work there? Reputation for square dealing with employees? Pleasant surroundings? Will I be working with others my own age? Are they friendly? Do they socialize after hours? Will the boss be reasonable? Appreciate good, hard work, but won’t explode if I make a mistake? Will I make a decent week’s pay? Have a chance for raises, advancement, more responsibility? How about fringe benefits? Is the work challenging? I had what it takes to get through high school. Will they give me a chance to use my brains? Note: Many young men arid women in this area can answer ā€œYesā€ to these questions. They work for New England Telephone Company . . . New England’s largest employer. Why not talk with our employment interviewer soon . . . before you graduate? Ask your Guidance Counselor to tell you when and where to apply.
