Q I , I 5 21 --EN-x Inlli I iiiliiio I believe in boys and girls, the men and women of a great tomorrow, that whatsoever the boy soweth, the man shall reap. I believe in the curse of ignorance, in the efficacy of schools, in the dignity of teaching, and the joy of serving another. I believe in wis- dom as revealed in human lives as well as in the pages of a printed book, in lessons taught not so much by pre- cept as by exampleg in ability to work with the hands as well as to think with the headg in everything that makes life large and lovely. I believe in beauty in the schoolroom, in the home, in the daily life and out of doors. I believe in laughing, in all ideals and distant hopes that lure us on. I believe that every hour of every day we receive a just reward for all we do. I believe in the present and its opportunities, in the future and its promises, and the divine joy of living. You won't be forgetting us soon. We paved the way for future frolicksome fun when we as Sophomores, spon- sored a dance under the leadership of President Dale lvlaier. Nor did we stop therel All through our junior and Senior year, we maintained our rugged and staunch individualism. The junior Prom proved the social high spot of the season, thanks to the executive management of Bill junkin. Those good looking blue and gold class sweaters were also chosen during this eventful year. Let us not forget our senior personality, l-larlan Somer- ville, under whose guidance we have arrived at the close of our high school acreer. David judd will be remembered as the state champion cornet soloist, Don Payne for his public speaking, and Elva Lewis because of her 4-l-l work. We leave with fond regrets despite all our nonchalant bravado and extend a hand of appreciation to lvliss Barnes and Mr. Mitten, our class advisers. ,.,..-v WARREN SNllTH Sergeant at Arms Sll lllll NORMAN ANDERS College Preparatory Honor Society 2, 3, 4' Plwlogistions 3, 4, Ba l-li Y 3, 4j Intramural Bas ketball 2, 3, 4, G Club 3, 4, Tennis 2, 3 4 JM' E SYLVETA ARMSTRONG General Entered from Prosser Girls' League 4, Skff Clu 4 , ,fl ROBERT ALBERS General Boys' Club 3, 4. Neverthless, we are fully imbued with vigor, ambition and deter- mination to emulate those leading characters who have previously graduated from this school. With a goal of Determining how to make worthy use of leisure time, we have entered into the C. H. S. spirit. Monthly meetings were held enthusiastical- ly with splendid entertainments. We were well represented on both the maple court and the gridiron during the year. Also, let us not forget those Crimson and Gray clad gymnasts who tumbled their way to fame. David Stinson, that loud-voiced Yell Duke and the two song Duchesses, Bernice Peterson and Mildred Coburn, certainly have mede themselves heard at Pep assemblies. Many are in the Honor Society, showing that the Class works as well, therefore we confidently assure you that we will be heard from in the future. Under the theme L'Personality our junior Class started the year with monthly meetings and exceptional programs. With his name in tall letters is President Dick McGandy, who has capably headed us. ln january we presented a novel program for the general assembly under the advisor- ship of Mr. Boettcher. Early in the fall, striking green and white sweaters appeared with boastful numerals of '40 mounted on them, proving our determin- ation. At the initial opening of Girls' League plays, several misses proclaimed to the world their versatility through their outstanding acting ability-we expect to hear from them later! Bringing a successful year to a close, came our highest feature, the junior Prom, at which we really showed the Seniors a time! lt can easily be called the most brilliant andventer- taining event in the annals of Chehalis High. Next year will find us renewed in zeal and zest. Q rfg I fx TNQ? 45- My Q I7 Q ACTIVITIES Q iv Kimi .Elf ' f Q xbfkz' 0 a?9 yxefsu 990 QI 1-1I5g,'IIOx X5 QBXX X.. The credit falls to the efficient student government of Chehalis High. To decide on awards and major school issues, they have met monthly, making several addi- tions to the school constitution, Members included the president and sec- retary of the Associated Student Body, president of Sophomore, junior, and Senior Classes, Girls' League, Boys' Club, and Big C Club presidents: Song Queen and Yell King, and editors of the Press Club, Chehalin, and Crimson and Gray. The band had a successful season of marching and playing on the football field, the outstanding feature of which was the jointappearance with the Centralia High School Band on Thanksgiving day, when both groups performed simultaneously. Their attention was then turned to concert work. Following a Christmas program, practice for the annual Southwest Washington Music Contest be- gan. The band brought a busy year to a close by furnishing music for the commencement exercises. At the band solo contest held in Olympia, the seven Chehalis entrants who participated made exemplary showings by receiving four ratings of superior and three of excellent. Something new in this division was the baton twirling solo by our drum major, Dick MCC-andy. As a climax to a year's hard work, several mem- bers were awarded Crimson band letters. ' Congratulations are in order for the remarkable work done by the chorus this year. Their program for the year has been very full and many excellent performances have been given. At Christmas, a concert, given in combination with the band, was enjoyed by a very appreciative audience, Later in the year they made appearances at surrounding schools, and also took part in many civic activities. ln March, the chorus entered the Southwest Washington Vocal Music Meet in Olympia where they received a rating of excellent. As editor of the Crimson and Gray, lean Laughlin has put out eight editions, all overflowing with news, features, and what have you. Starting a new tradition for this activity, the newspaper force sponsored a student dance early in the school year. Once a week, on Friday evening at 4:I5, the Chehalis High School has gone on the air over the local radio station, KELA. The Press Club has been responsible for this, under the able leadership of Dorothy Riley, and has given school news and short programs to the entire community. The Chehalin sponsored an assembly in March which launched the '39 sale of annuals. Although remaining somewhat in the background for the rest of the year, under the lead of Editor Rosemary Graham, the annual staff has been gathering and editing material for the crowning achievement of this organization, The l939 Chehalin. A visit to the Girls' School at Grand Mound took place in the Spring where both entertainment and gifts were presented. As a final triumph, a Mothers' Tea was given in May. Worthwhile achievements have been at- tained by a noteworthy club with Mrs. White and Barbara McGandy for guidance. This uproarious play centered around a grumpy husband and father who almost ruined his home life by insisting that he live a plain'l life. The peak of hilarity was reached when the family gave Mr. Kalness a dose of his own medicine by serving a plain dinner to his guests. From the first curtain to the last bow the audience was kept in a hilarious and side- splitting state. The best in years was the unanimous opinion of those who saw the play. Who else in study hall can talk and get away with itg who else can walk about the room while most students squirm about under the teacher's watchful eye? The librarians are kept busy checking out books and magazines, and keeping the books in some semblance of order. A Librarians' Club was formed last fall with Miss Harms as its adviser. lt is composed ot all the librarians and meets twice a month. ln order to better acquaint the girls with the books in our school library, reviews and discussions are given on various ones. A second aim is to promote interest in the advancement of dramatics in this school. The Skit Club has presented many skits in connection with the football and basketball pep assemblies. Two other outstanding programs which the student body received with acclaim were musical emulation of famous radio programs. The club is divided into three groups of dramatical work -students interested in writing plays, headed by Marion Halverson, those interested in acting, headed by Marguerite Wells, and those interested in radio, headed by Dorothy Riley. Billie's artistic sense and clever interpretations of leading roles in the school's many stage productions have won added laurels to her list of unique scholastic achievements. Equally at home with character parts and straight drama, she has immortalized her in- numerable triumphs for C. H. S. his- tory. ROSEMARY GRAHAM Carrying two extra subjects with a final grade average of 37 A's and l B, Rosemary Graham easily carried off second highest honors as Salutatorian of this year's class. Especially outstand- ing in the journalistic field, Rosie has turned out one of the finest Che- halins C. H. S. has had.
