RX puuwffliml Maw Ami FOREWORD Man is now in a period of rebirth. He is living in an era that has produced heart transplants and moon landings. Because of these and other events we ofthe Centorial adopt THE AGE OF AQUARIUSX' as this year's theme. Today's people are no longer tied to traditions because, as ZS QQ J at :QQ -Q J ff. 43 sxvifff . SI H? 3 A i' A Q 1 'L -X Q W Q-,A x fr? S --A A QW U, l our theme symbolizes, they live in an era of change. where long haired hippies, L.S.D., and transcendental meditation exist. They are people with creative ambitious minds who not believe in The students of this are independent. They free to be themselves! Just as laborers are liv- ing in a world of where disease and war are everyday con- ditions, so too are today's students faced with an ever changing educational sys- tem. In this age of tech- nology, education is essen- tial. It forms the backbone of todayls students. In this period of independence. pupils have gained through their knowledge a greater and more influential voice in their own destiny and that of the world. As students are we now educated enough to know what is best for us and for the world? Can we make the right decisions? t W 433 42 2' Q f S W , f Q!!! . Ml v AWWQ' C7 Jef Y -XB by This year as always the Centorial is proud to have as its art 'ldvisor Mr. Joseph Granditz a man of many talents. Mr. Granditz, attended and grad- uated from Pine Hill School. After graduating from Buffalo State in 1955 where he continued his studies in art 'md English he taught at Voormsville New York. In 1957 Mr. Curanditz served a two year stint in the U.S. Army. After his discharge in If ' DEDICATION 1959 he taught at Cortland Junior High School. In 1960. Mr. Granditz took over as head of the art depart- ment at Cheektowaga Central. He was later granted his m1ster's degree in both English and art. Since hi coming ' 1960, Mr. Granditz has participated in a number of activities. He has taught adult edu- cation in the Held of 'art for a number of years, and also aids in the beauti- hcation of the school by rranging .X displays in the display cases. Mr. Granditz spends a great deal of his time working on scenery for the school dramatic productions. but his most time-consuming job is that of art-advisor to the Centorial. Therefore, in recognition of his many contributions to faculty and stu- dents of Cheektowaga Central, the yearbook staff takes great pride in dedicating the 1910 edition of the Centorial to Mr. Joseph Granditz. This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius. So goes the hit song of a current hit musical. We may not accept the pro- nouncements of the astrologers' occult science nor this controversial musical. Nevertheless, the Age of Aquarius, labelled positively as Hhumane, intuitive, un- biased, negatively as rebellious, suspicious, inetlicientv, and career-wise as phi- losophical and scientiiic, is peculiarly akin to the changing times as We enter the 70,s. Many of our youth are troubled, concerned, frustrated, even suspicious and somewhat rebellious as they join us in the struggle against a debilitating War, seething racial and ethnic bias, depressing poverty, and deepening corruption in all quarters. And rightly so! Yet I note a very positive note among our Cheektowaga youth as they join us in what may truly become an era of peace and love and accomplishment. I think our middle and older generations have begun to do a good job of looking at life as it really is. With youth, we are beginning to focus on what it ought really to be and with effort can be. In short, our promising Class of 1970 and their strong supporting underclass- men are looking at the realities of life. They are uniquely ready for the dawning of the age of Aquariusn with all its hope and optimism. They are enthusiastic about the promise of the future as they seek to share in our universal quest for peace, love, and genuine humane achievement. MISS BERTHA K. DAUER PRINCIPAL IVIR. He will remember the frustra- tions of his Freshman year when he was launched into a new mode of life. He will also remember the trials and tribulations of becom- ing an adult. He will retain the memory of the many concessions of his Sophomore year which included candy sales, football and basket- ball ribbons and stationery. He will recall the days his voice went hoarse cheering his Varsity football team onto victory. He will also remember tre Spring Out as the day that his class con- trolled half of the school gym- nasium!! He will recall his Junior year and the Ring Dance where he received his class ring. DECORATING CARS FOR THE I.F.K. MOTORCADE VICE PRESIDENT RAYMOND KSIAZKIEWICZ NINETEEN SEVENTY He will also remember winning the Holly Hanging Contest and the many tissue flowers he made for the J.F.K. motorcade. He will long recall Camelot and the chaos that ended with the transfor- mation of the cafeteria into a palace of medieval beauty. Above all, he will remember his Senior year! He will recall his Senior Day when his friends were recognized for their individ- ual achievements. He will call to mind his senior dinner as the last time that he and his class ate to- gether. He will retain the memory of his Senior Ball and the Cinder- ella like change that took place in his peers. Q4 The Senior Student Council is an organization of students which was established to promote school spirit and school activities. This year the Student Council, under the guidance of Mrs. Taylor, the faculty advisor, and Ben Homel, the president, initiated many new projects and continued already established traditions. The Student Council began its year with the successful Computer Dance. This dance which made it possible for one person to have as many dates as he or she could stand. The dance, which was one of the best ever held in the school, was well received by the student body, who hope that this type of activity will become a new school tradition. This important organization also sponsored the bonfire before the J .F.K. football game. This long lost tradition of a bonfire was renewed by the council who knew that the student body wanted it. Besides the candy cart and Vaudville 70', the Student Council also sold octangular stop signs which read You Can't Stop the Warrior,sl These signs were sold to help promote school spirit. In the fall, the Student Council helped to get students involved in the P.T.S.A. fParent-Teacher-Student Associationj. Now better decisions concerning school codes and students can be made because may present their own thoughts and ideas. In accordance with the P.T.S.A., the Student Council sponsored a variety show, which though rescheduled, was enthusiastically received. Complaint Day held on November l4th, highlighted the year's agenda. This day was set up to inform the council of the grievances of the student body. The Com- plaint Day was successful in that seniors received their privileges, overcrowded buses were rescheduled, and students were allowed to go to our lockers between classes. Holly Hanging will be remembered as one of the councils most enjoyable projects of the year. The Eighth and Ninth grades won trophies for their interpretation of Christmas isfv and Peace on Earth . The aims of this year's Student Council were to promote school activities and spirit. Another important goal of this organization was to promote the name of Cheektowaga Central among other schools. The Council, which is the voice of the students, has become invaluable. It has not only instituted new ideas into our school traditions, but has many more in the planning stage as an etifort to strengthen relationships between the students and faculty. MORLEY Again this year, members of the Junior Student Council have been moving at a lightning pace, providing numerous activities and pro- grams that benefit not only those of the Junior High, but all students at Cheektowaga Central. Early in October, the new members were in- ducted at an impressive ceremony and very soon afterwards the council got into full swing. The traditional magazine drive was, once again, a huge success, and the total, way over S6500, sur- passed last year,s total of S5450 by quite a mar- gin. The school received the Little Threev tro- phy by beating Maryvale and J.F.K. high schools. The Junior Student Council requested, secured permission for, and sponsored what they hope to be an annual event, the first Faculty-Alumni basketball game. A full gym cheered the teams on and the antics of the faculty were greatly en- joyed by all. The game ended with the unusual final score of 56-56. After each mark- ing period, honor awards are presented to these deserving young people in behalf of the council. The annual J.S.C. scholarship award, a twenty- five dollar bond, was presented to Jean Lewalskig Barbara Morely, Mike Aschenbrener and Laura Jusczak. The annual Christmas THIC Dance can be chalked up as another one of the Council's many successes. In May, the J.S.C. sponsored the Spring Out, a carnival held each spring in the school gym, followed by a dance in the cafeteria. Spring Out is an event at which many of the school's organizations raise money for their activi- ties. The members of the club are constantly on the go attending such functions as the stage and national Junior Classical League conventions, the an- nual Roman Banquet, Christmas party and film festi- val, along with several field trips to take part in the Latin Club activities of other local schools. Mr. Becker and seven members of the club attended this yearls national convention held at Tulane Univer- sity in New Orleans, along with delegates from forty other states. The five day convention revolved around various scholastic and athletic competitions. The up-coming state J.C.L. convention is to be held at Binghamton University. It will differ from past con- ventions in that it will last for two days instead of the usual one. During these two days election for state officers will be held, skits will be presented, olympic games and several scholastic contests will take place. In the evenings, students will have a chance to get to know one another by attending mixers or other social activities. ROW ONE: L. Juszczak, J. Boczkowski, M. Szyszka, G. Wagner, C. K. Bigos, L. Parents and members ofthe French Club were invited and looked on as students dressed in Roman garb conducted a slave sale. New members were auctioned off in order to boost the treasury. Later, in addition to serving dinner to their own par- ents, they helped serve members ofthe French Club, their mas- ters and the parents of the latter. Entertainment was provided by the French Club singing songs, followed by a skit written by Mrs. Becker and put on by some ofthe first year Latin students. The first issue was distributed, free of charge in May of I969 and because of its great success members of the staif hope to pub- lish semi annually. Emanon offers the student body an opportunity to express them- selves through their own poetry, short stories and art work. It pro- vides them with the chance to prove to themselves and others that they are sensitive young people with something to say! The talents so long unnoticed, the feelings so long unheeded find recognition throughout the paper of Emanon. Through their magazine. students have found a way to make known their ideas concerning such controversial subjects as the war in Viet Nam, social strife and the generation gapn. These themes have been brought out again and again in student contributions. t- ian 5 Not only have students submitted works concerning world problems but also those concerning their own personal problems, experiences, dreams, hopes and even fears. The ability to express one's self through literature and artwork is not restricted merely to students attaining high scholastic achieve- ments, but is often possessed by those possessing only average abili- ty. Emanon has given them the opportunity to exercise and experi- ment with their abilities. Through Emanon. an interest in literature and culture can be initiated and encouraged. It is hoped that their literary magazine can maintain the recognition and popularity it deserves. The student body took a great interest in wrestling and provided the team with cheering sections at both home and away meets. The coaches Mr. Paul Steinig, Mr. Denton Dodd, and Mr. Joe Rich saw their boys win many meets, but what was probably the biggest win of the season occurred at the first meet when they beat Grand Island for the first time in the history of the team by a score of 33-16. The team also scored impressive victories over Nichols C49-35, Alden C29-155, and Eden C27-145 and lost to a first place Pioneer team by a small margin of C25-191. ln the past our Warrior wrestlers have brought much honor to our school and, they will continue to do so! 140 FRESH IVIAN WRESTLING ROW ONE: W. Not a boister- ous or riotous end but a sad and solemn one known only to the students of Central! For seniors it not only marks the closing of four years of learning and maturation but also heralds the dawn of a new and great life, a life that could shape the world. You will enter the world of real- ity, a place of inequality, pesti- lence and war. It is now upon the shoulders of all seniors to make the decisions that will better man's existence. You will be the e fteachers of tomorrow. Some will ifurther their education at college while others will acquire jobs, or defend their nation. These men and women will be the hope of our land. They will put men on the planets, transplant human or- gans, and develop philosophies. In their lifetime they will try to answer the questions that have puzzled man since the beginning of time. They will try to make the world a better place to live in! A grave responsibility rests upon underclassman. If all others fail, you will have to accept the challenges and responsibilities of a new age-uThe Age of Aquar- 1US,7. Q55 O O smgntimmuus R- ECEIVI 1569 '13 ,.,-. 1..1-.-.L.1-1- .ilw ............-.
