SPECIAL SERVICES THE CLINIC . . . A well integrated school health program is dependent upon the close cooperation of all those concerned, the child, the school administration, parents, teachers, school and family doctors, school nurse-teacher, speech therapist, psychologist, dental hygienist and family dentist. The aim of the School Health Program is to obtain and maintain the best possible physical, mental and emotional health for all students. These health services include the annual physical examination, subsequent athletic examinations, dental inspection, screening for vision and hearing acuity, emergency first-aid care, and assisting in the immunization program which includes diphtheria, tetanus, polio- myelitis and smallpox vaccination. Recommendations relating to the health needs of students are submitted to parents, teachers and the school administration. THE DENTAL STUDY . . . The National Institute of Dental Research at Bethesda, Maryland, is using their accumulated research information to aid in the prevention of cavities at Cheektowaga Central High School for a second year. The results from this new method of applying fluoride may make a most exciting and valuable contribution to Dental Health. SCHCOL HEALTH DEPARTMENT HEALTH STAFF DENTAL STUDY STAFF LEFT to RIGHT: DR. LEFT TO RIGHT: MR. L. WHELAN, MR. WM. MCCARRON, MRS. E. FOSTER, MRS. M, ELLIS. MRS. M. GOODMAN, MRS. M. BURZIK. GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT What is the Guidance Department? To many people it means many dif- ferent things. A new student will look on it as a refuge from the mass confusion of the first day in a new school. The Guidance Department is a for- bidden place to be on the first day of school if you want a change in your schedule, unless you wish to risk the penalty ofa haggard counselor glaring at you. In doubt about which course to take or unsure about regents or non-regents, the eighth graders are offered many suggestions and possiblesolutions. The undecided Senior looks at the Guidance Department as a mound of pamphlets and ideas concerning iobs and colleges. Many teachers, to the dismay of the counselor, find the Guidance Depart- ment the place they can find John when he should be taking a test. The counselors feel the department is long talks with students, files of student records, conferences with par- ents, piles of endless forms, but most important the place where a student will find himself and know where he is going after he discovers this. To you it could mean a wealth of sound advice and a helping hand over the stepping stones to your future. 2l
