X -Q i it ii is Q DEDICATION Although he has been on the faculty at Central only a few years, Mr. Oppermann has won the admiration of students with his congenial personality and informal structure of his classes in Citizenship Educa- tion. As Coach of the J.V. Football Team and Varsity Swimming Team, Mr. O has contributed his talents in the interest of promoting school spirit and furthering student participation and competence in athletic competition. A graduate of Bennett High School and Hobart College, Mr. Opper- mann pursues as a special interest, the study of American History. In recognition of his contributions to the student body both as an educator and in extra-curricular activities, the yearbook staff dedicates to Mr. Oppermann this 1966 edition of the Centorial. DISTRICT PRI NCI PAL DR. EARL J. BOGGAN Rapid technological changes are leading to labor-saving devices which will mean in the future, that youth will be going into a world of employment which will require fewer work hours per week and at a greater financial renumeration than at present. The learning of a skill and being assured that the skill will enable one to earn a living throughout the rest of his life is rapidly disappearing. The effects of automation will require relearning of new skills constantly in an effort to keep abreast of the changes in one's chosen vocation. The greatest challenge will be how to use the increased amounts of leisure time to best advantage. Today's youth entering employment will be able to retire younger and with retirement benefits that 30 years ago would have been considered pure fantasy. The stepping stones to the future are all about you in the form of oppor- tunities to learn, appreciate and understand how the involvement of art, recreation and service to others can make your life so much richer. The use of leisure time can be an enriching experience or a waste. The future will require a well integrated individual who can budget his time and keep abreast of the changes in his formal employment and at the same time know how to take full advantage of his increased leisure time. WQ5.3.f.,s, PRINCIPAL , 6 tCfrf..?, 6-fe - E If MR. CHARLES ALLGEIER What is there to be said to you, the Class of '66, in preparing yourself for the days that lie ahead? I would say that your generation stands at the threshold of the most critical period in all ages of civilization. Other generations have been summoned to speak for a nation, a continent, a hemisphere, yours must speak for a planet. Previous generations have been called upon to build a country, survive a depression and win a war. Yours is being asked to save a civilization. We cannot accomplish this by following the crowd, by being average, by being mediocre. No one becomes skilled by accident. A man must have training and experience. To earn a living, to discharge the responsibilities of citizenship and to enioy the leisure which increased productivity promises, more education will be necessary for almost everyone in the years that lie ahead. I dare each of you to secure all of the education possible, to develop a willingness to work, to let your imagination carry you far afield, not to be afraid to be different and risk being called a square because you wish to do right by your fellow-men. Reading problems in the seventh and eighth grades this year are being approached by this new program. Mrs. Van Brunt, the head of this project, hopes to create an atmosphere that will be conducive to read- ing, as well as one in which the students will want to read. The reading of magazines and newspapers which interelst the student is one of the new methods intro- dbced in this program. Magazines and newspapers are chosen as the reading matter for they are interesting to the student, causing him to want to read and strive to understand what he is reading. Although, it is still too early to notice any success on this new project, it is evident that an interest in read- ing has been stirred in a vast maiority ofthe students. To many people it means many dif- ferent things. A new student will look on it as a refuge from the mass confusion of the first day in a new school. The Guidance Department is a for- bidden place to be on the first day of school if you want a change in your schedule, unless you wish to risk the penalty ofa haggard counselor glaring at you. In doubt about which course to take or unsure about regents or non-regents, the eighth graders are offered many suggestions and possiblesolutions. The undecided Senior looks at the Guidance Department as a mound of pamphlets and ideas concerning iobs and colleges. Many teachers, to the dismay of the counselor, find the Guidance Depart- ment the place they can find John when he should be taking a test. The counselors feel the department is long talks with students, files of student records, conferences with par- ents, piles of endless forms, but most important the place where a student will find himself and know where he is going after he discovers this. To you it could mean a wealth of sound advice and a helping hand over the stepping stones to your future. 2l SPECIAL SERVICES THE CLINIC . . . A well integrated school health program is dependent upon the close cooperation of all those concerned, the child, the school administration, parents, teachers, school and family doctors, school nurse-teacher, speech therapist, psychologist, dental hygienist and family dentist. The aim of the School Health Program is to obtain and maintain the best possible physical, mental and emotional health for all students. These health services include the annual physical examination, subsequent athletic examinations, dental inspection, screening for vision and hearing acuity, emergency first-aid care, and assisting in the immunization program which includes diphtheria, tetanus, polio- myelitis and smallpox vaccination. Recommendations relating to the health needs of students are submitted to parents, teachers and the school administration. THE DENTAL STUDY . . . The National Institute of Dental Research at Bethesda, Maryland, is using their accumulated research information to aid in the prevention of cavities at Cheektowaga Central High School for a second year. The results from this new method of applying fluoride may make a most exciting and valuable contribution to Dental Health. SCHCOL HEALTH DEPARTMENT HEALTH STAFF DENTAL STUDY STAFF LEFT to RIGHT: DR. Remember our Sophomore problems? We worked all year on a dance to be held in April-a dance we couldn't sell enough tickets for-the kids worked so hard, too . . . I'm sure the office remembers our Sophomore year-the flood of students requesting locker changes from the iunior high side. . .We had a hard time collecting class dues but we managed to get nearly everyone's cooperation. So much happened our Junior Year. I can't recall all l'd like to. robably one of the biggest events was the purchase of our class rings . . . everyone was pleased with them . . . Of course we had to raise money as Senior year and all its expenses was so close, so we sold candy, had V , pl iff Z X Uolfagbake sale at a basketball game, collected our perpetual dues, and on t day of the Senior Ball we had a car wash giving a helping hand to the harried senior boys . . . Remember the problems, fun, and excitement of preparing for our Junior Prom? The ianitors in collecting the garbage accidentally threw away half our materials, and how about our water- logged cherry tree? Anyway we finally had the prom. The theme Shangri- La and the music of Joe Nowak and his orchestra transcended all descrip- tio V. Ending this year's activities were the class picnic and the dreaded JJ We started our Senior Year with the usual enthusiasm and Senior- itis. The days throughout this year weren't easy to forget. The pizza sale in November, our dues, and other proiects made it possible for us to hold our Senior Banquet, the Senior Tea, and the final social event of our four high school years, our Senior Ball. Soon after was our Class Day's arrival with Graduation following close behind. As we received our diplomas, many of the events of the past four years flashed in front of our eyes. Though most were ioyful and some sorrowful, we shall cherish them all forever. M WW ALf,3f65',,Q-0'kvd If JWNAJMMWA 01?W7 1 , J'-V wzrw X5 N M Sgbw vii X X, myhprrpff My W , V F rank R. During September the Class of Sixty Seven chose as their officers Karen Zinteck as President, Ann Frys as Vice President, Karen Berschek as Secretary and Trea- surer, Sharon Zwolinski. A highlight of our Junior year followed when we were measured for class rings. Many of the boys will remember this as the year they made a Varsity team or earned a maior letter. Later came the Junior Prom, the culminating activity that placed us at the threshold of our Senior Year-another big step to the future. MR. BECKER, HR. 217E FIRST ROW, Left to Right: G. Lachet, J. Those Three whole years have suddenly become only two more years ahead until senior-dom and graduation. Realizing this and knowing that good leader- ship is essential, the Sophomore Class elected as their officers: President-Ed Guenther, Vice President- Dennis Brown: Secretary-Marilyn Strempski and Trea- surer-Jean Both. Finally regarded as being a part of the senior high, this year's Sophomore class contributed a great deal to the activities throughout the school. Accepting more responsibilities, making more complex decisions and facing the first Regents Exams were among the challenges accepted by this group as they took another important step towards the future. Although hard to believe at the time, becoming a Freshman is an impor- tant step towards the future. Decision as to a course of study must be made, improved work habits established and greater responsibilities must be assumed by each individual if the class is to advance. Under the capable leadership of President Mike Mogavero, Vice President Dawn Heigl, Jim Lewek as Secretary and Treasurer Bob Johnson, this year's Freshman class made their advance- ment to Sophomore status while displaying good iudg- ment and perseverance. News, unclouded with false idealism, and honest opinions were presented in order that students would be incited to use the paper as a means to express their opinions. Reporters concentrated on improving journalistic style to produce a paper awaited and eagerly read by an increasing number of students and teachers. 85 On being inducted into the Senior National Honor Society, the new member accepts certain responsibilities and privileges. Scholarship, leadership, character, and service form the basis of responsibility. Throughout the year, members are asked to aid in projects of value to our school in accordance with these ideals. Tutoring, serving as guides, typing for teachers, and operating the Paperback Bookstore are some of the tasks which this organization undertakes. Balancing this responsibility of membership, however, are special privileges extended to mem- bers. Under the capable guidance of Mrs. Mernan and Mrs. Ham- mond, the Senior National Honor Society has had a very pro- ductive year. SENIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FIRST ROW: D. Denz, E. Zerkowski, N. Under the direction of Miss Le- gierski, this group conducts assemblies, assist faculty, and in general work forthe betterment of school and community. 87 H. Nikiel, T. Kiec, J. Heitz, T. Barnes SENIOR STUDENT COUNCIL The two maior goals ofthe 1965-66 Senior Student Council were to increase school spirit and at the same time to enhance the image of the Council. A Student Court was formed with the hope of helping to eliminate undesirable student behavior. Working closely with the administration and faculty, the Council inaugu- rated a monitoring system for corridors and lovatories. Other suggestions, too, were made for the improvement of the school. A close rela- tionship was developed between Junior and Senior Student Councils, as they cooperated on such proiects as Dress-Up Days and dances. Buses were provided to away basketball and football games. The last important under- taking was the presentation of the Third Annual Variety Show. In general, it is the opinion of the Council that some progress has been made toward the realization of its goals. FIRST ROW, Left to Right: G. Zagorski, C. Langenfeld, S. Benz, S. Musella, K. JUNIOR STUDENT COUNCIL The first official duty of the Junior Student Council under its new advisor, Mr. Bifano, was to elect its officers. During an assembly in October the officers were sworn in by the Officers of last year. The new leaders of the council this year were: President, Linda Stankevich, Vice President, Denise Borowaik, Secretary, Debbie Denz: Treasurer, Paul Wiechec. The council again this year held its annual magazine sale. The proceeds of this year's successful sale were used to benefit the Student Exchange Program. Another undertaking for the council this year was a dress-up campaign for grades seven, eight, and nine. Again, as in the past, members on the council this year volunteered to collect homeroom buff cards each morning. This daily practice has proven to be an invaluable service to the faculty. A voice in what happens to the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades is the immediate goal of the Junior Student Council, but more important it hopes to promote better cooperation between teachers and friends. Eventually it will prove to have been an unskippable stepping stone to the future of its members. FIRST ROW, Left to Right: S. Chmura, C. Arnett, D. Pomerhn. SECOND ROW: L. Paoletti, C. Sahnlein, K. The past year has been a very successful one as we accomp- lished many things. We gained nursing experience helping in the clinic, during Study' Hall periods and also assisted with the immunization program. Service projects during the year included: l. Sending good will cards to our students who were ill in the hospital. 2. Doing volunteer work in the area hospitals. 3. Making tray favors for the children's ward. 4. Being responsible for the bulletin board in the clinic. An exciting field trip to Meyer Memorial Hospital was made on December A and a Xmas party was enjoyed by all. The Future Nurses Club sponsored the Lynnette School of Dancing on June l2 here at Cheektowaga Central. Two fifty dollar scholarships are given each year to any senior entering a school of nursing with the money that is raised during the year. OUR MOTTO: Find your future through the Future Nurses Club. As Coach Rearic said at a pep rally, We are small in size and number, but we have the attitude to win. The season started off with three defeats but our defense came to life in the third game. On October 9, 1965, a date which will remain in the minds of the team forever, we defeated our rival J.F.K. High School in a dramatic 7-6 battle. This was our varsity's first win after nineteen losses in a row. As a whole, the season was a success because the team never quit trying and always played a hard game. The fellows learned a great deal through victories and defeats which they will remember throughout their lives. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL FIRST ROW, Leff to Right: B. Reger, J. Letki, J. Favafa, M. There were a few times when only one point separated the winning and losing teams. Our squad broke the school record and the freshman record for two and a quarter miles of running. The team was composed mainly of freshmen with a few seniors. These seniors did their iob well while the freshmen developed themselves quickly. If the looys keep up their hard work, the future of our cross country team looks very bright. As a whole, the team maintained a high competitive spirit which helped it to achieve success. MR. Although the tallest team we have had in many years, we unfortunately lacked the talent which makes a team consistently victorious. The boys tried their best and never quit no matter what the situation was like. They played a number of close games where they lost by only a single point. l06 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: B. They performed well on the court cmd used their talents to the fullest extent. If they continue to work as hard in the future as they have in the past, we are sure to attain the division championship next year. The team seems far ahead of other teams in learning the tech- niques of the game and when they become the Varsity squad next year, should have mastered the fundamentals and picked up the intricate poin s t of basketball which distinguish a good team from a great team. 107 .um as-susan'-W ,-,, fififl f V ,, U iii:-1, 1 ku . - , at h, 711 fi 1? 1 . s 'Q dn: M. As usual the older members of the team deserved a great deal of the credit for their fine accomplishments. They were the ones who took most of the first places in their events. A good swimmer, like most other athletes, takes years of hard practice to develop. That is why the older boys, who have been on the team for a number of years, have done so well. The younger members of the team, who will return to swim next year, will be stronger and more ex- perienced. They will be able to continue driving the team ahead toward more victories.
