J -SA Q USA- 1 NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH Cd Tm6M4UD December 9, 1964 Mr. Charles S. Allgier Principal Cheektowaga Central High School Cheektowaga, New York Dear Mr. Allgier: It is a pleasure to offer to the students and faculty of Cheektowaga Central High School the appreciation of the National Institute of Dental Research for the conscientious and spirited way in which the school has pioneered in a re- search program to learn how better to prevent tooth decay. Dental caries is the most prevalent disease in the United States today. We at the National Institute of Dental Research are dedicated to the scientific effort that will, we hope, provide us with answers regarding the cause, prevention and treatment of the disease. We expect that the new knowledge which we seek will make a substantial difference in the dental health of our population and to the general health of the American people as well. We are especially mindful of the tnportant contribution which Cheektowaga Central High School is making in the current re- search program. The principal, faculty and students of the school are to be congratulated for the effective cooperation, fine spirit and scientific understanding which have gone into making the program a success. This practical effort to make science work for the benefit of mankind is a credit to all of you and to the health leaders of your community. This civic minded educator has at various times been a member of the Akron Town Board, The Board of Education, Chairman of the Akron Grange Youth Center, Town Historian, President of the Historical Society and presently serves as Justice of the Peace. Mr. Webster's leisure time is spent traveling, gardening and exhibiting his horticultural results. The entire school body extends to Mr. Web- ster its wish for many years of enjoyable retire- ment. The effect of his teaching upon many of the town's citizens will be a living testimonial to thirty-five years of dedicated service in the Cheek- towaga School system. The Girls' Athletic Association in the Senior High School has provided the girls in grades 9-12 with an opportunity to participate in such activi- ties as soccer, field hockey, tumbling, basketball and many other team and individual sports activi- ties. Its most important activity, the water ballet, takes much time and preparation before the show is ready to be presented in the spring. Under the leadership of its officers and its advisor, Miss Slocum the Senior G.A.A. has held a dance, sports night, candy sale and water ballet. Raised by the girls themselves, these funds are used for G.A.A. awards that are presented at the end of the school year. SENIOR HIGH G.A.A. Because of the many injuries suffered by key team members, the Varsity Basketball squad did not experience a season of unanimous victory it usually enjoys. The 58 to 47 defeat of Maryvale was the high- light of the season. This was the first time our Warriors had beaten the Flyers in thirteen games. Since Juniors played an important role in this year's games, Mr. Moyce hopes that the return of these experienced, vital, team members will produce a winning team for the 66 season. MEMORIAM The greatest loss suffered by the team and the school was the sud- den and tragic death of Bruce Nowaczyk. This capable, congenial teammate will long remain in our thoughts. J .V. Whitehead, F. Strempka, T. Kiec, J. Pilarski. The Cheektowaga Central Warriors exper- ienced their most unsuccessful football season with eight defeats and no victories. The team was ham- pered by its small size and many injuries in the early part of the season. Because of the small size, coach Rearic moved the offensive line closer together to provide for better blocking. However, this did not prove to be effective and the team went through half the sea- son without scoring. The first score finally was 13 points against our rival J. F. Kennedy. Although the team had a strong defensive line, the secondary was very Weak. The coaching staff is very hopeful for next year, because of the promising Junior Varsity team. This year they finished with four wins, three losses and one tie. AR ITY FOOTBALL w 1 1 FIRST ROW: G. Hill, MGR., R. Opperman, ASST. COACH: J. Rearic, HEAD COACH, J. Kladke, MGR. SECOND ROW: M. In order to increase student interest in the school newspaper, the staff has attempted to create a new look in the monthly publication. This was started by changing the name of the paper from the CENTURION to the SCRIBE. By publishing a neater, more readable paper, filled with more interest-holding articles and features, the circulation has been increased. Additional revenue from this plus the sale of ads, has increased the possibility of accomplishing still another goal . . . to have a printed, not duplicated newspaper. CE TORI L The yearbook has contributed many long and hard hours of work to publish the 1965 edition of the Centorial. To aid in financing this year's publication, the staff sold re- freshments at all home basketball games, sponsored a successful candy sale, and ob- tained patrons and ads from business establishments and organizations in the area. Members of the Centorial staff attended the Western New York Interscholastic Press Association Conference sponsored by the Buffalo Evening News at Bennett High School in December. Our yearbook did very well in the competition, placing fourth in its division. In the spring, members also attended Press Day which is sponsored each year at St. Bonaventure University in Olean. They are a legislative body that employs extensive powers to determine school policy within the framework established by the New York State Constitution and Legislature. Consider well before you set out. Will you be among those who travel up- ward? for inevitably, it is they who will, even in your time, fashion a new world, a world whose foundation will rest on the dignity of man and within whose walls a collective conscience will af- ford each a happiness and freedom from want and fear such as mankind has never known. Boggan, District Principal A student who is in school today can look forward to living in a world which will differ greatly from that which we presently know. During the lifetime of today's stu- dent, the world's population will double. Many job titles as we know them today will be replaced by occupations that we have no knowledge of at present. More of the world's goods will be produced in less time leading to greater amounts of free time for the world's population. The cure to most of the world's illnesses will have been dis- covered although new illnesses, as yet unknown, will have taken their place. People will live longer in better physical health and security. The world's people will have become more unified in an effort to avert a catastrophic war. These are but a few changes that can be anticipated. For today's high school graduate, the future promises a more exciting, stimulating and potentially hazardous life, a life that will require constant adjustment in thinking, planning and mode of living. The ability to cope with the changes which will occur and to benefit most from them will depend upon each individual's willingness to continue to educate himself to the fullest potential all through life. ,-.-,,, ...,. ... .WY -...,Y.,.,-.--.X.-.,,rqL....,.-,, ..v-+..vV---nut.,-,..4!llps,-w . N M MORIA This year om' school has suffered the tragic loss of Mr. Gordon Luther. During his years of teaching here, Mr. Luther served the school as Music Teacher, band director, and the community as personnel manager for the Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Luther was best known for his love of music and he in- spired others in this love. The students and faculty of our school will remember him with affection and gratitude. DEDICATIO This year, for her unselfish contributions to Cheektowaga Central, the 1965 Centorial is dedicated to Miss Sopata. As a World History teacher and advisor to the yearbook, Miss Sopata has given much of her time and effort to serving the students and the school. Miss Sopata attended high school at Nardin Academy. She came to Pine Hill in September 1954 directly after receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree from D'Youville College. Miss Sopata became advisor for the yearbook shortly after she came to Pine Hill. From then on the yearbook became a financial success and under her guidance received many awards. Therefore it is with deep gratitude that we dedicate the 1965 Centorial to her. X X Vx,.,f .'
