BACK ROW: John Rorex, Bill Koch, Leonard Abbott, Lylln Cowan, Terry Archer and Joe G ose. The Checotah Wildcats are proud of being the surprise team of the N. 0. O. A. Conference. The Cats were picked to finish near the bottom of the league. But the desire and fight gave Checotah its first undefeated season in nine years. The blue and white was highly regarded in this area and received high rating in the state po ls, The Wildcats opened the season by upsetting Stlgler 20 to lb. Lylin Cowan and Leonard Abbott provided the spark on the ground with Cowan breaking for an 85 yard run. Kenneth Mincher and Rusty Martin were surprises as new men in the line-up and helped open holes in the Stigler line. Terry Archer led the attack against Atoka by intercepting three passes, one for 50 yards and a TD, and another for a Sb yard gain. Checotah won 31 to 0. The Wildcats and the Wagoner Bulldogs tied 20 to 20 on a mud covered field. After a slow start, the Cats pulled up to even the score. The defense played one of the best games of the season with Jack Blackburn, Ronnie Wilson, and Edward Kloeckler playing as stalwarts in the line. Terry Archer and Joe Grose provided the flash to drop Westville by the score of 38 to 0. Archer had a 60 yard run called back but countered a few plays later with a 75 yard run. Grose, who was a standout as defensive halfback all season, picked up a punt and rolled 65 yards to pay dirt, Beggs was downed 38 to 18 with Bill Koch and Archer providing the searing punch. Koch broke bb yards, and Archer romped 5h yards. John Rorex intercepted a pass to set up a punt and rolled 65 yards to pay dirt. FRONT: Goad, Rorex, Eddy, Kloeckler, Wilson, Blackburn, Martin, Mincher, Bchardt, Roe, Hickox, Thomas, Davidson. MIDDLE: Coach Latham, Ketchum, Gross, Abbott, Koch. Cowan, Archer, Combs, Burdett, Martin, Hicks, Eby. BACK: Gramllch, Womack, Spaulding, Harris, Stevens, Rose, Fredrick, Allen, Williams, Coach Jackson. The highly rated Morris ball club was dropped from first in the state polls by the 32 to 0 defeat at the hands of the Wildcats. Five seniors led the club as Rorex blocked a punt and recovered on the four yard line to set up the first Abbott scored U TD's for 2b points. John TD. The Cats opened a real drive for their first undisputed title in nine years when they surprised Poteau 38 to 0, Abbott and Cowan provided the speed this time when Abbott broke up the middle for 70 yards, and Cowan had scoring jaunts ff 60 and 5h yards. Stilwell provided the real test as the Pre-season favorite proved to be really tough in the mud. Archer, the speedy mite, broke the ice by going 29 yards for the first TD. Kenneth Eddy, A11-State End, provided two markers by catching a pass with U seconds remaining in the half and picking up a blocked punt for another. Edward Kloeckler, Doyle Schardt, Jack Blackburn, and Kenneth Mincher were among the stand-outs in the line. Sallisaw proved to be a very determined ball club, but the Cats got by on a 20 to 8 score. Sallisaw was limited to 120 yards, but remained a threat all night. Checotah was able to take the annual contest with Eufaula B2 to 8, as Wilson blocked a punt for a score, and Bill Koch showed his heels for a 50 yard gallop, Kenneth Eddy was selected for the All-State team, and Leonard Abbott was plac- ed on the second All-State team. In addition three others were selected for the All-Conference team.
