Checotah met Stigler in the season's opening game. The inexperienced Cats were beaten 13 to O, but in the second game of the season the Cats showed promise by leading Pryor, Verdigris Valley Champion, until the last quarter before bowing 19 to 13. The game was high-lighted by the play of substitutes who took over when five starters were unable to play. Raymond Ledbetter caught five passes from Paul Wells, for two touchdowns. Wagoner, Conference Champion defeated Checotah 13 to O, but the Cats rebound ed to down Westville 31 to 13. Ronald Colburn was the leading ground gainer as the Wagoner Bulldogs were pushed hard until the final quarter where they scored. Bennie Osborn caught two touchdown passes against the Westville Yellowjackets The Hartshorne Miners were defeated 13 to O. Ledbetter was injured and Lylin Cowan took over to quarterback the team to victory. Virgil Bledsoe, always outstanding on defense, ran an interdepted pass 66 yards for a touch- down. The Wildcats then stopped Tulsa Central B team 13 to O but fell the following week before Poteau 33 to lL. The Stillwell and Sallisaw games proved to be tough but the Wildcats prevailed 13 to 6 over both t ams The Stillwell game was a defensive game with Dale Winkle, Larry Beach, and Walter Hart, and J L Matthews listed as standouts in line play In the Sallisaw contest Leonard Abbott, junior full back, carried sixteen times for 133 yards and Kenneth Eddy completed 6 passes for 122 yards Eufaula was defeated 32 to O as Ferry Archer, sophomore halfback gained 196 yards in nine carries Other highlights of the season include the play of center Jack Blackburn, defense and long kick offs by John Rorex, defense of Joe Grose, and defense of Edward Kloeckler Important in several victories was the play of Jim Gordon, Jim Burdett, and Don Busha Other honors for the Checotah Wildcats go to Virgil Bledsoe and Raymond Ledbetter, co captains for the season Virgil was selected on the N O A A All Conference team and Ledbetter was selected to the conference team and became he fire? all state player from Checotah since l9h9 -i i I 1 X -ew 9' . . ' '. - . 2 .. Senior Play Cast The hit play of the year 'Six Stitches for Ego' was staged by the Senior cast No wonder it was tops though -do you see those two directors, Bill Frame and Ellis Stout? They were very able assistants to Mrs Perry Kennedy The story evolved around Dr Bell who conducted a school for adults He used the basic principles of a nursery school and a few of his own He allowed his students, who were quiet on the surface but violent on the inside, to let their feelings run riot In the Mad Room they could shoot guns, break bases and set fire to drapes On the stage they worked with clay, wood or finger paint, played in sur-uments, danced, kicked the Boas fa life sized dummylf equooshed their toes in mud The play showed the students learning to adapt to their envirom ent until the sudden closing of the school by the police and they land in Jail due to the fact that they gave vent to their emotions in public places When the students caused a little extra work on the police, they were happy for Dr Bell to re open his school The play ended with Dr Bell and his landlady, Kay, discovering they are in love and planning marriage and a honeymoon Sweetheart, the hoodlum, who has con stantly been in trouble with the police agrees to attend Dr Bell's school because Rochelle Judson does and he has fallen in love with her Melvin Stoddard and Merry Bell patch up their differences and 1t's wedding bells for them too J B Judson is finally able to scream at everyone even his wife, Elmira DR.
