HE WILDCA Dedlcatlon Herman Emerson, MB, one of Oklahoma's greatest high school basketball coaches, and mathematics instructor here for the past 12 years He came to Checotah in 19hh from Onapa, and was employed as a co bination math instructor and girls basketball coach His basketball teams immediately shot into pro inenoe. His teams won the state championship in l9h3 and again in l9hh. The following two years his teams won regional championships, and were beaten in the finals of the state playoffs. Checotah's girls basketball teams won district or regional titles prac- tically every year until he retired from coaching two years ago. A ' wg' , A gf. - ' 1 'j THE WILDCAT if ii Harold Latham Coach Jr Hart ll conf uarterback Raymond Ledbetter All Conf End N Don Humphrey Captain All Conf Fullback Rudy Koch Captain All Conf Halfback The Wildcats won a share in the N O A A con ference championship in a three way tie with Sal lisaw and Stilwell Each team had identical re cords of 5 wins and l loss The season was marked by outstanding and exciting football with such thrillers as the Wagoner and Sal lisaw games The Cats showed their potentialities early in the season when they were able to make a great comeback against Wagoner Trailing 26 to 7 we came back in the fourth quarter to win 27 to 26 Later in the season Checotah handed Sallisaw their only loss of the season in the game that forced the conference into a tie The Cats ju ped to a Zh to 7 halftime lead and fought a Black Diamond rally to win 3h to 33 The Checotah team had several outstanding players but much of their success must be attributed to their fine team play offensively and defensively The defense was led by linemen such as, ends, Benny Osborn and Raymond Ledbetter, big tackles, Paul Voss and Virgil Bledsoe, guards, Jack Hill, Roy Scott, and J L Matthews and center, Arvil Jackson The offense was led by the all conference back field with such plays as the 65 yd run by Q B Jr Hart against Hartshorne, and the 77 yd run b Neal Emerson at Stigler Rudy Koch turned in a 3 yd gallop a ainst Eufaula, and big Don Humphrey F B rambled O yds against Stilwell Emerson also con nected on a pass to Ledbetter for 65 yds at Sallisaw The high respect gained by the Checotah players was demonstrated by the fact that several were se lected to the N O A A All Conference Team The seven were Don Humphrey, Raymond Ledbetter, Rudy Koch, Jr Hart, Jack Hill, Arvil Jackson, and Neal Emerson who also received special recognition by the Tulsa World as one of the top 3: boys in the state Harry Jackson Asst Coach Neal Emerson All Conf All State Mention Halfback Bert Bledsoe Arvil Jackson Jack H111 All Conf Center ll Conf Guard f .
