CLASS HISTORY We, the Senior Class of 1954, in order to give you a glimpse of our high school years and of the achievements we have made, present you with the following class history, W e began our career inhigh school as eighth graders in 1949, being known as the “ T rail Blazers’ 1 . This introduced the five year high school program at Check High School. We had forty-three members enrolled under the leadership of Mrs. Nancy H. Gibbs, Sponsor, and Jarrette Lawrence, President. Although we were shy and rather timid, we were willing to learn and to do many things. Only forty freshmen returned in the fall of 1950. There were many boys and girls who took an active part in the club activities and social life of the school which made us full-fledged upperclassmen. Miss Alice Hylton, Sponsor, and Jarrette Lawrence, President, did a fine piece of work in guiding us through a very successful year. With Mrs. Alice S. Howard as our sponsor, and Garmon Conner as our president, we had a very prosperous year as sophomores. We gave a one-act play, “Shadow of a Dream’’, with several members displaying capable talent as actors and actresses. Although we had a few problems and difficulties, we were a happy and fun-loving class. We found ourselves a little nearer our goal and a little more self-willed when thirty-one “jolly juniors’’ enrolled in September, 1953. We presented our class play, “The Phantom Bells”, to a huge, appreciative audience. What a thrill we had when we received our class rings in November. How proudly we wore them! Through the untiring efforts and efficient guidance of Mr s. Kathryn Brockman, Sponsor, and Marie Vest, President; we had a most thrilling junior year. And now seniors! It seems just yesterday that we were beginning high school. With the help of Mrs. Nancy H. Gibbs, we are planning to make this a successful year for everyone. Our officers are accepting the many responsibilities given to them. They are: Garmon Conner - President D.W. Sowers - Vice-President Robert Brown - Secretary Harold Conner - Treasurer Ezra Walton - Reporter On December 4, 1953, we gave our Senior play, “Cornin’ Round the Mountain”, with many of the seniors taking part. What a thrill when the call went up for the opening curtain. Now we are reaching the most exciting moment of our high school life, Commencement. But no matter how far we wander or how prosperous our lives may be, our hearts will always cherish the memories of Check High School. Mr. C.G. Gibbs has been our principal for the past seven years. We are thankful for and appreci¬ ative of his endless efforts and understanding of our school problems, and the fame we have accom¬ plished through his faithful guidance. To the eighth graders we leave happy sailing for four more years. CUSS PROPHECY The other night while watching a wellknown show on T.V. I musthave fallen asleep, for it seemed that far into the distance, I could hear a faint voice saying, Strange things are happening,’’ And to my surprise, strange things were happening, for I seemed to find myself in an oddly fasci¬ nating city. Wondering where I was, I walked to the corner and bought a newspaper. To my astonish¬ ment, it was dated May 9, I960, six yea rs since I had graduated from high school. Still undecided about where I was, I walked up the street, and stopped in front of a beautifully land¬ scaped building. Over the entrance was a sign, New York Public Library.’’ Longing to escape the crowded sidewalks, I stepped into the quietness of the library. A neat young lady greeted me. Looking more closely I recognized Betty Conner, an old classmate. She had attained her goal, to be a librarian. While reminiscing with Betty, I learned that Marie Vest was employed as a private secretary to another clas smate, D .W. Sowers, who was a beginning lawyer. I told Betty to give them my regards and wished them all luck. Leaving the library, I hailed a cab to the airport. While speeding through the traffic so expertly, I noticed something familiar about the reckless way the driver was driving. Judging from his hot-rod ways and mischievous smile, I found it to be none other than Paul Walters, another classmate. On arriving at the airport, I paid my fare and bid him a cheerful good-bye. I purchased a ticket to Wash¬ ington, D.C. In a few hours we were landing. While leaving the plane, someone suddenly called my name. Turning around, I looked into the smiling face of John Dennis Harnan, who told me he was a pilot in the air force and that Lyndel Foster was an aeronautical electrician, I congratulated him and smilingly bid him good-bye. As I boarded a bus, I recognized the driver by his bashful ways to be none other than Ezra Walton. I took a seat near the window as someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked, How did you ever get up here? Turning, I greeted Opal Young, who was a housewife and stenographer. Opal told me that Ramona Reed was a nurse in the Walter Reed Hospital, and that Ruth Bennington was a doctor in the air force. Luck seemed to have been good to all my former classmates. After leaving the bus, I decided to get a cup of coffee. Entering a small cafe, I noticed two sailors sitting near. From their inseparable attitude I quickly recognized Don King and Lindsey Austin, who invited me to join them. I learned that they both were married to Roanoke girls. They told me that another former classmate, Harold Conner, was also a sailor, and that Julius Shepheard was in the National Coast Guard. Bidding my friends good-bye, I proceeded on my way. Having nothing else to do, I decided to visit another classmate, Margaret Smith, who was married to a sailor. She was living in Baltimore. Arriving late, I spent the night with Margaret. She told me that Wanda Clower was working as a bookkeeper for a large manufacturing concern. Next morning we decided to visit her. As we entered her office, we found that she was very busy. There we found an¬ other old friend, Jarrette Lawrence, who was now a Certified Public Accountant. Jarrette explained that Wanda had made a great mistake. After correcting the mistake, Jarrette invited the three of u s out to lunch. After lunch I decided to get a little closer home. Catching a train to Roanoke, I left my friends waving from the platform. Making my way to my seat, I found myself seated across from a pretty red-headed girl. After a few minutes, she smiled at me and said, I believe you are an old friend of mine.’’ Happily, I recognized Christine Barnes, who was working as a secretary and was going home on a vacation. She told me that her good friend, Marie Peters, was married to a corporal in the army and was living in Texas. And that another good friend, Louise Walters, was married to a red-headed dairy farmer and living in the old home town. Getting off the train in Roanoke, Iran into another clas smate , Robert Brown, who was an engineer. Robert told me that Cecil Guilliams was a marine and stationed in California. After bidding Robert goodbye , I decided to visit my old school. Catching a bus to Check, I settled back in my seat and closed my eyes. Then suddenly someone stopped beside me and asked, Lady, do you mind if I sit here? Opening my eyes, I recognized H.D. Lee, who told me he was a captain in the army. From him I learned that Garmon Conner was now employed at Jamison Motor Company in Radford as a mechanic. Looking around the bus more closely, I recognized a tall, dark haired girl getting on the bus. Excusing myself from H.D., I made my way to the front of the bus. Tapping the lady lightly on the shoulder, I asked, Don’t I know you ? ’ ’ Suddenly I was looking into the face of another clas smate , Margaret Nichols. She told me she was married and living at Copper Hill. Getting off the bus at Check, I bade her a cheery good-bye. Seeing the old, but familiar, school building, I got off the bus and slowly walked up the road. Walking up the front steps and through the door, I saw a tall young man coming down the hall with a group of boys. I stopped as I recognized Thomas Link, who told me he was the Physical Education Instructor. I learned from Thomas that S.L. Spangler was also employed by the school as the Agriculture Teacher. Leaving the school, I started walking down the road. Suddenly I heard a tractor clicking along. Turning around, I saw none other than Marlin Hoback who was a farmer. Just as I was about to speak to him the clicking of the tractor grew louder and louder. As I started to run, something hit me with a heavy blow. Sitting up, I realized I was sitting on the floor and that the tractor was only the buzzing of the T.V. set. Getting up, I realized I had fallen asleep and missed my favorite T.V. program. I was sad for one reason, but on the other hand I was glad because I had seen all of my former classmates. There were forty-six of us then and we were very happy to be in “high school”. We were helped over the rough spots by our sponsor, Mrs. Nancy Gibbs. We enrolled in the freshman class at the beginning of the school year with a total en¬ rollment of thirty-seven and an excellent sponsor, Miss Alice Hylton. Our first real test of maturity came when we had to select our subjects. Some of our members served very well on both the baseball and basketball teams of our school. Our sophomore year finally arrived. We were now in our third year of high school. Although we started out as a class of forty-six, we were now only a group of twenty-three. Many had dropped out and some had been left behind. We had a very good year with Mrs. Brooke Alderman as sponsor. We are now “Dignified Juniors”. There are only nineteen members of our class left. We are hoping that no more will drop out andthatwe will all graduate in 1955. We received our class rings and are very satisfied with them. We are also looking forward to our Junior Play which we hope to give in the spring. Mrs. Carolyn Spessard, our sponsor, has proven to be a real friend to all of us. The year 1950 was an important one in our lives. We started in high school as eager students, shy, but willing to work to attain our goal. We felt distinguished because we were entering our high school career. Ronnie Henry was our class president and our sponsors were Mrs. Kathryn Brockman and Mrs. Nancy Gibbs. As beginners we started with fifty-five members on roll. During the years this number has decreased. Then, in 1951, we entered the ninth grade as full-fledged high school students. Under the competent leadership of Miss Alice Hylton and Mr. William Ayers, as our sponsors, and Mr. C.G. Gibbs, principal; we had a very successful year. A group of forty-five confident boys and girls have begun a successful year under the guidance of Mrs. Iris Aldridge and Mr. Clifford Winters. For now facing us was the task of changing classes and learning to get along with more people, all the upperclassmen. Most of us came out all right due to the careful guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Conner, our sponsors. Our officers were: Presi¬ dent, Essie Mae Shaver; Vice-President, Louise Janney; Secretary, Beckey Lou Poff; Treasurer, Phyllis Dean King; Reporter, Janet Allen. On August 31, 1 953, we entered the ninth grade with Miss Alice Hylton and Mrs. Clif¬ ford Winters as sponsors. We had an enrollment of fifty-two students. After the Christ¬ mas holidays we received a new student who was a transfer from Floyd. Many of us are participating in basketball, serving as officers of important clubs, and working on the school newspaper. Our class activities are being capably carried ' out by various committees and the class officers. EIGHTH GRADE HISTORY The eighth grade is proud to have an enrollment of sixty-two pupils who have tackled their first year of high school with enthusiasm and determination. There were the usual problems of finding the right classes and being awed by upperclassmen, but these we soon overcame. When we settled down to our studies we found that some of them were quite new to us. But with the help and guidance of our teachers we found that they were also very interest¬ ing. WithMr. and Mrs. Curtis Conner as our sponsors, we hope to get a good start toward becoming one of the best classes Check High School has ever had. That is our goal and we’re going to work hard to achieve it.
