THE LOG We, the Freshman Class of '50, set our sails four years ago in a new high school building and fortunately we were not as green as most Fresh- men. We learned our way around together. There were one hundred and twenty-four of us, all proud as punch to be the first Freshman Class in the new building. Murriel Walker was elected president of the class, and Miss Holman and Mr. Farmer were our sponsors. Two of our girls were elected cheerleaders that year and one girl and five boys were placed on the basketball squads. Five of our boys made the football squad. As Freshmen we were getting our share of school honors. As we entered our second year feeling a little more sure of ourselves, things began popping even though our class had fallen down to ninety- six members. Mr. Jimmy Maxey, Miss Sue Johnson, and Mr. Nate Bastian were elected as our sponsors, while Jimmy Evans was elected president of our class. Three of our girls were elected cheerleaders and we were well represented in basketball as well as football. Sherry Gupton was elected Homecoming Queen and Sandra Craig was the attendant from our class. We all enjoyed a big hayride that year that will never be forgotten. Our Junior year began with a boom. Miss Frances Fults, “Miss” Pinky Christian, and Mr. Jimmy Maxey were elected as our sponsors. Ben Shearron was chosen as class president. In Jan- uary the annual magazine sale campaign came up and we emerged with the highest sales in the school's history with the grand total of $1,738.18. Naturally, we were very proud of this. We out- numbered the other classes in cheerleaders with five on the list that year. Paul Langston and Leonard Hinkle were elected Co-captains of the football team and again Sherry was elected Foot- ball Queen, Dot Balthrop serving as class attend- ant. Our play in May was certainly a success with “Miss” Pinky as director. Finally, prepa- rations for the Junior-Senior banquet began. Every one was excited getting ready for the big event which was to be held at Montgomery Bell Inn. Then it was time to order our class rings. Our hearts were in our mouths. Could we wait till next year? September, 1953, finally crept around and we were back at school with more dignity than ever. We were Seniors now. Ben Shearron was again elected president of the class with Miss Fannie Lou and “Miss” Pinky as our sponsors. Melo- nce Adkisson was elected Editor of the annual and we immediately started selling ads and an- nuals. We were working toward the biggest and best annual ever published in Central High School, something different and unusual. With the coming of the dawn of each new day, we, the Senior Class of '54, are aware of the fact that our zero hour is fast approaching and soon we must make our exit. For twelve years we have worked toward but one goal, that goal being graduation. Now that the sands in the hourglass are running low, and as we take our places in a more complex society, we shall continue to keep our faces ever toward the sun so that the shadows will fall behind. Class Historian Dorothy Jean Balthrop
