Letson Commissioner of Education Superintendent of Schools Page IO The function of the Board of Edu- cation is to survey the financial needs of the schools of Chattanooga, such as remodeling, repairs, new buildings, and added services. This year we re- ceived some new equipment for our cafeteria and went on the standardized food plan to improve the sewice of our cafeteria. For these and other needs the Board requests sufficient funds from the City Commission and budgets them for the operation of the schools. The board also formulates general policies for the operation of the public schools. Mr. Frank Trotter, Commissioner of Education, presides over all meetings of the Board of Education and his vote may be used when needed to break a tie. Dr. John W. Letson, Superintendent of Schools, has been in educational work since 1936. He received his B. S. degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, his Master's and Doctoris degree in edu- cation from Columbia University.
