BATES A busier man than he you'd find nowhere. This line from Chaucer, penned hundreds of years ago, is applicable today to our principal, Colonel Creed F, Bates. Besides his countless administrative duties, he is sponsor of the student council and is active in numerous religious and civic affairs. Here he uses the telephone as an indispensable aid in discharging one of his many duties. MISS SCHOLZE A lively soul, who knew the inmost art. Yes, our registrar, Miss Scholze, knows all our arts of excuse making for why we don't make up E's. She it is who aids and abets the teachers in urging us to remove these doubtful marks from our records and make sure of passing and graduation. MISS BAZEMORE It All the world's a stage, and each man in his time plays many parts, Miss Bazemore certainly should rank high as an actress. The parts she plays are many - a pleasant voice over the telephone, a listening ear and a patient voice when we pour out our tales of woe about why we were absent, and the tact and diplomacy of a Richelieu in dealing with office affairs in general. That is Miss Bazemare! MR. CONRAD BATES AND MRS, NAN MARTIN Mr. Bates - And still they gazed, and st,ll the wonder g rew, That one small head could carry all ne knew. Goldsmith meant these lines to apply to the village schoalmaster, but we apply them wholeheartedly to on schoolmaster, Mr. Conrad Bates. He tinds his way without trouble among the intricacies of physics, aviation, and the administration of the Chattanooga High School treasury, to say nothing of being coesporsar of that very lively organization, the Bulldogs. Mrs. Martin, assistant school treasurer, is equally at home among the mysteries of bookkeeping. Srnilingly efficient, she presides over the bookstore and sponsors the Bankers' Club. I-IAGEVVOOD Vice-President LOUISE CURE Secretary CONNIE JANEY . Treasurer With two successful years safely behind them, the Class of '53 prepared for an exciting and busy year as seniors. As sophomores they began with ticket sales for football games, presented an inspiring Thanks- giving program and entertained all ninth graders from the neighboring junior high schools. The coke machine was also the sophomores' responsibility, and they initiated the new cracker machine. As juniors, the Class of '53 worked hard to make the junior play, Turn Back the Clock, a tremendous success and then entertained the seniors at the beautiful Stardust junior-senior prom. Several junior girls also served at the senior luncheon. The senior year was filled to overflowing with activities: the senior play, One Foot in Heciven, the Christmas program, Senior Day, Class Night, May Day, the senior picnic, Baccalaureate, and then graduation. The Class of '53 can be proud of their achievements at Chattanooga High School, knowing that their class was one of the best. The drill squad, Bulldogs, Key Club, Junior Optimists, and Maroon and White soon claimed many work- ers, while others were busy selling tickets for football games and helping to support all school activities. At Thanksgiving, the class gave their annual program, and they concluded the year by entertaining the ninth graders. ln their junior year, their energy and industry continued. There was always something to be done for the class such as a party to plan or a program to present, Too Many Dates, the iunior play, was enioyed by all, and the juniors gave the seniors a very successful prom. As the year ended, the members of the Class of '54 looked forward eagerly to becoming seniors. TEAM Although the scores indicate different- ly, the Dynamos showed Chattanooga High School that they could play ball on the sod. Under the direction of Coach Varney, Coach Brotherton, and Coach Henry, the tviaroons portrayed great skill with the pigskin. Starting with a new system, the single-wing, and almost all new play- ers, the team shaped into a well or- ganized group. With the fearless line- men and the pounding backfield, no victory seemed impossible. The Dynamos got off to a dazzling start, closely trailing Soddy-Daisy with a score of l3-7. By many, the Red Bank-City game was considered a toss-up, but the tviaroons came through with a striking finish, City 14 and Red Bank O. City's second victory came when the Dynamos trampled Tyner 24-O. Playing at their best, the Dynamos lost to a fast moving Spring City team Qi-6. Next on the list was Rossville High School, which defeated our boys I9-O. The following week the Dynamos showed great strength when they almost defeated Rome High School in a knock-down, drag-out ball game with a score of i4-6. The Maroons suffered another loss to McCallie 26-6. Rhea County inflicted upon the Dynomos a terrible defeat of 26-20, City marked great improvements when they closely trailed Bradley by an almost unblievable score of 25-l9. The next week saw City beaten by Dalton 25-7. The Dynarnos made a terrific come-back in the second half to defeat T.Nl.l. by a score of 38-20. Chattanooga High had a group of boys march to the finals and become champions, Coach Jim Henry, the boxing coach, had the boys training every evening atter school and sometimes on week-ends. The success of the team is due to the boys themselves because ot their endurance and abili- ty to stick with the sport. ln boxing, experience is essential if you want to become a champion, and, to acquire experience, you must train diligently. Shoclcley slams a smashing right. The five trophies with their winners are listed as follows: 1953 GG. High School Novice Runner-Up, Trophy was won by J. Duncan, D. Hobbs, R, Gill, J. Coach Varney's track boys had very little chance to show their dexerity as a team. Because of some unavoidable difficulties, the Dynamos had only one Track meet, and that was with Knoxville Fulton. In This meet, the Dynamos only placed two in second, and there were no first placers for our team. When Chattanooga started work on The new viaduct, it had To close The front entrance to the school parking lot, Thus leaving only The back gates as a means of entering. In order to get to The parking lot, one had to drive over The track, which left it in an atrocious condition. After the viaduct was completed, it was thought that The foundation would be laid for the new gym. Later, Coach Varney learned that the gym would not be started after all. This left the boys only a few days to get into shape for the coming track meets. Some of the boys had only two days to practice before the meet with Knox Fulton. Knox Fulton beat our boys 87 To 20, Thus closing the track season for the City l-ligh Dynamos, TRACK TEAM-First Row: L. Myers, M. Neville, F. Seagle, J. McKinney, J, Cheston . . . Second Row: B. Coach Osteen's hopes were set high at the beginning and all the way through the season for a champion team, the Dynamos lost their chance when they were beaten by Central 4 to 5 in the District Playoffs. City won the first game they played by beat- ing Red Bank 7 to 4, but dropped their second game to Ooltewah 6 to 12. They won their next four games from Hixson, Soddy-Daisy, Ooltewah, and Tyner, respectively. The Dynamos lost their next game to Red Bank ll to l4, but followed up to beat I-lixon I6 to O with .lames Thomas, the young lad with tour victories out of tive games to his record, pitch- ing. Soddy-Daisy beat our boys 4 to 9, but the Dynamos again made a comeback to beat Dalton 7 to 2 and Rossville 5 to l. The Dynamos lost their last game ot the season to Bradley 5 to 6. Although a record of eight wins and four losses is a good season, Coach Osteen hopes to have an undefeatable team next year if all of his boys are able to play. Na, I haven't found it yet, Dean, but I'm sure I will, We've really gat to pinch pennies so we can put out a good annual at a very low cost. Yes, I know that very well. Did you know that we have one of the best annuals in the South, and at a surprisingly low cost? Oh, sure, Jerry. Of course, getting ads from patrons of the school, sponsoring Stunt Nite, and selling peanuts, candy, cookies, and such things in the cafeteria help us to provide some of the money for financing our annual. Yes, I know. That really helps out a lot on making the price of our annual low. Speaking of getting ads for the Dynamo re- minds me, Jerry. That's what l'd better be doing right now, See ya later. Uh, well, Pauline, I tried very hard, and, just when I was about to walk out, the man called me back and began asking a lot at questions. What did he say? First, he wanted to know why he should buy an ad. Then he wanted to know why it cost so much and what we did with the money he gave us. I explained to him that we at C.H.S. have one of the best school papers in the South and that we have to have ads to help pay for the paper. Then I told him that- Wait a minute! THE JUNIUR 0P'I'llVlIi 'll Say, did you see that show the history dee partment had last period? Yeah, I saw it. One of the Junior Opti- mists was in charge of showing it. Those boys really know how to work those machines. Why, the other day, one of them broke, and by the time we got the lights on and turned around to see what had happened, he had it fixed. Ah - is that right? Yeah, that's the truth. Another thing they do is sell hot dogs for the football games, They really work at that. This year they bought a new machine and raised most of the money to pay for it. Those boys really work hard helping C.H.S. to have good films and better equipment for showing those films. The 'stinkers' help a lot, too. Don't they? Sure do. They'd better if they know what's good for 'em. Shucks, I don't know how Cl-1.5. would get along without such fine service clubs, and the Junior Optimists are a fine example of a good service club.
