Excuses fly thick and fast, but they are to no avail. No student manager ever had such a group as this to con- tend with. When the meeting finally convenes, there is a question of this and that, a disagreement on such and such a point, and it looks as if they will never get any- where. But, finally, order is brought out of the chaos and when the smoke of battle has been blown away by friendly farewells, the meeting is reviewed and something was accomplished after all. The simple facts of high scholastic standards and achievement over almost three-quarters of a century stand out, but more than all these the genuine love of C. H. S. and the unity of purpose between the students and the facultv to make it an even better school show that they have always done a great job at . . . From the looks of all the extra-curricular activities, the sports, dances, and the parties, one would think no one ever goes to class at C. H. S. - but actually the exact opposite is true. Classes, strange as it seems, take up the maiority of the students time, and tc- good ad- vantage it seems. The senior class in nationwide com- petition for scholarships won approximately thirty-five awards and was rated outstanding by all the examina- tion boards. Our preparation was thorough, too, our physics laboratory is one of the finest high school labs in the state of Tennessee. Many of the American history classes went on field trips to Chickamauga Park to aid their study of the CivilWar. One of the unique classes is the driving class. Besides experience in the dual control car, they went to traffic court to learn the func- tions of the law. In view of all this it is no wonder that the students are pleased when Harold says: GO NOW TO YOUR FIFTH PERIOD CLASSES. gf X2 T 1' ix, X A. ,A 4 ,.,k l W wi vp v m- Qmfa. glmgi 552.25 ,. ww A 'L ' 'LTf'QY,Zflil?QgZ5' QXQHEQ Q 5 ' W V, i25:isQf?i:'52fa?'1Sgt, xlFIi5?f5if fi- ' 15. President TOMMY TURNER . . Vice-President CLAUDIA SMITH , . Secretary DOUG OLDENBURG . . Treasurer This year our class was 'between the devil and the deep blue sea.' We were between our sophomore year ot confusion and our privileged senior year. We lost our sponsor too, but here we were lucky, Mrs. Estill was elected sponsor and with her help and a lot of hard work we had a very enjoyable year. We opened our social calendar with a Hop-O-Ween Party in the tall and tollowed up with a tacky party in the early spring. Our claim to dramatic tame was Arsenic and Old Lace, a comedy enjoyed by all. lt was not all glory and fun either. We worked as well-twenty junior girls served at the senior luncheon and the whole class helped decorate for the Junior-Senior Prom. We have enjoyed our two years at C. H. S. even with our trials and tribulations, but we all look tor- ward to next year when vve will be the 'big wheels' and the 'privileged characters.' First Row: W. J. Baird, C. Butler, J. T. Baird, F. This program shows one of the school's dominant features - that is, work mixed with play. Along with the hard hours of drill, marksmanship, and classwork come Parents Day, with its parade and presentation of sponsors and the Military Ball with its gala coronation. This year, however, with the war clouds gathering each day faster and more furious, the work has a touch of added interest, the drill is sharper and the bull's eye sometimes for an instant takes the form of a man holding a gun. Everyone realizes the graveness of the world situation, and, so, with the true American spirit all take on a new seriousness when they hear: R.O.T.C. OUTSIDE WITH RIFLES AND SABRES. C. pro- gram, In these times military training is ot utmost importance to the students at Chattanooga High School. This introduction to military service gives cadets a background and a touch of the atmosphere connected with military lite which are invaluable even it one should never enter the service. Under the direction of the P.lVl.S. 84 T. Lieutenant-Colonel George Bone, the cadets drill and study military courtesy, organization, weapons, small unit tactics, marksmanship, map reading, and physical training. Assisting him is Captain Robert Miller, who teaches seniors part-time and cofordinates the in- struction periods. Master Sergeant Hurt teaches the juniors and doubles as supply sergeant. Sergeant Bass, as sophomore instructor, has the iob ot setting the new cadets oft on the right toot. Sergeant Mar- tin, a Korean veteran, ioined the statt near the end at the year. He took over the teaching ot the sen- iors. Sergeant Easterling does the paper work tor the battalion, making records, writing letters, and til- ing. Sergeant Hoagland, seldom seen around these halls, co-ordinates between the City and the Central R. O. T. C. units. Besides the varied instructional duties, many extra-curricular activities occur in the military department, Among these are the Honor Platoon, The Disc and Diamond Society, The Rifle Team, and the Non-Cams Club. The battalion this year was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ed Guthrie. It consisted ol four companies, three of them with three platoons, one with two, and the R. O. T, C. Band. The cadet officers worked well with their men and this year's battalion ranked with the best. The battalion staff, under the cadet colonel, attends to business not required of the instructors and out of the iurisdiction of the company officers. The staff consists of Lieutenant Colonel Ed Guthrie, Battalion Commander, Maior Harold Freeman, Battalion Executive Officer, Maior John Englehardt, Plans and Training, Captain Jim McAlister, Batf talion Adiutant, Captain Ronald Sullivan, Intelligence Officer, Captain John Cahoon, Supply Officer, Captain Edwin Hill, Public Relations Officer. We played our games, every one with a spirit and a will of which any school could rightfully be proud. We won honors too, both individually and in teams, girls as well as boys. True, it is not for our class to claim the honor of beating Central on the gridiron, but, we gained what is possibly a greater honor. An old Chinese proverb says that he who admits incapacity is on the road to success. Well, this year we, the teachers, the coaches, and the students decided that we couldn't beat Central now and that we couldn't meet them on even terms until something was done. And if we were strong enough to face the ridicule and the scorn, we are strong enough to rebuild. No one 'can say that this year we had no right to yell: LET'S GO, DYNAMOS! W -vm MWWWSHWM 5 pf-2. 1- ,A 4' 'lllll ME Wl'l'll Coaches Bob Mafusek, George Mathis and Pete Mattis talk over starting prospects for the Knoxville Rule game. The Dynamos begain their '51 season with George Mathis, new head coach, Pete Mattis, backfield coach, and Bob Matusek, line coach. Although he served in no official capacity, Stumpy Sarratore was invaluable to the team and the coaches as an assistant. The boys played good ball under their cap- able leaders and had a commendable record of six wins, four losses and one tie. In the opening game the Dynamos met and defeated Soddy-Daisy, i3-O, in a close contest. The second game introduced a new team to City fans when the Dynamos defeated Rhea County, i3'6. Next in line was Red Bank, and though the Maroons played good ball they could not break the 20-20 tie. City came back to take an impressive victory from Morristown by a 34-i2 count in a wild, score-fast game. Playing their best and most thrilling game of the season, the Dynamos defeated strong Bristol, 24-T9, in the last minute of play. The night would have been perfect except that we lost the services of one of our best backfield men, Bill Dillingham, for the remainder of the season. Columbia handed City their first loss of the season, defeating them 37-6, but the Dynamos came back into the winning column the next week by defeating Bradley 8-O. Managers J. Henderson, B. The Maroons faced one of Alabama's most powerful teams, Birmingham Phillips, and put up a gal- lant defense before losing the game, 54-6. The Dynamos played heads up ball and defeated big Knoxville Rule, 34-IQ, for a happy crowd of Homecoming game fans. In the annual meeting with the Central Pounders the Dynamos went down in defeat 51-12. This game will be remembered as the final meeting of the old time rivals of the gridiron for an undecided length of time. There were individual honors bestowed upon three ofthe Dynamo aridders. We will remember, with a touch of pride, how it felt to be backstage as well as in the limelight. All the world saw was a finished production in THE HEIRESS, THE TORCHBEARERS, and ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, but we remember the sweat and toil of practices and crew work, the monotony of learning the lines, and the work of getting up props and scenery. We had fun working, though, at the practices, and while reminiscing, one of the little things that will always come back to mind is the feeling we had, that faint wondering whether our iob had been well done, that hope of praise, when we heard those ever present scene closing words . . . M' was ' Now we near the end of our annual and as we look back we try to think of the things we will want to remember in later years. We'll probably remember the gripes and the quarrels we had with our teachers, and the football games we Kwon and lost. The dances we went to and the parties . . . Stunt Night . . . May Day . . . And as we look back there'll be a sad note too. We think of the things we have done for the last time. Our last Spring formal . . . the Senior play . . . the last football game. It will all be part of us. Chattanooga High School will have become part of our lives and even though we live a hundred years and travel a mil- lion miles away when we hear that certain strain of music we will always hear Booncy say . . . LET'S STAND AND SING OUR ALMA MATER. I L K 'I H 3, P111 ' PURT Golf Team. First Row: Vanous, Clayton, Captain . . , Second Row: Evans, Hale, Lowe. Playing in the local golf prep league, the Dynamo golf team made a creditable showing as individuals and as a team. There is no regular golf coach, but Col. lra Summers, band director emeritus, lends a helping hand to the young sportsmen of the greens. I-lard training and practice paid off for the track team when they entered the regional meet in Nash- ville. Stanley Worlen, a great runner with a real winning complex, came in second in the lOO and in the 220 runs. Jackie Bates, hitting the cinders for his third and last year at City, came in third in the 220-yard dash. The 880-yard relay team was composed of Worlen, Bates, Bill Dearing, and a sopho- more, Mark Biesack. Rickey Cobb, another sophomore, brought home the medals for fourth place in the 440 and for second place in the high jump. Sophomores really took the spotlight on the track team, as Sam Terry placed third in the 880. A mile is a tough run for any fellow, lout Henry Short, a iunior, came in second in the regionals. Short was also a member ofthe two-mile relay team, along with Sam Terry, Mickey Neville, and Rickey Cobb. ln the high jumping, Sonny Clark was right behind Rickey, placing third. Coach Bobby Matusek's track men hit their peak with this meet, for they earlier lost a close dual meet with their arch foe, Central, and did not continue their good work at the state meet in Cookeville, However, the future looks bright for the track boys who return next year.
