as f I 'lIltl'l'lll Mr. Creed F. Bates, a lieutenant-colonel in the Army Reserve Corps, is principal of Chattanooga High School. As principal, Mr. Bates is sponsor of the Student Council. Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Bonny Oaks School and a trustee of the University of Chatta- nooga, Mr. Bates is active in civic and religious Work in Chattanooga. When Mr. L. G. Derthick left for Germany, Mr. Bates became acting superintendent of Chattanooga public schools. l The assistant principal and the director of the summer school of Chattanooga High School is Mr. W. P. Selcer. Mr. Selcer was promoted to the posi- tion of principal for the rest of the school year during Col. Creed Bates, Acting Superintendent of Chattanooga the absence of Mr. Derthick. Public Schools- ln connection with his position as school treasurer, Mr. Selcer is sponsor of the Bankers' Club. Be- fore taking up the duties of principal, Mr. Selcer was found each school morning in the main office checking tardies. Miss Ruth Scholze, school registrar, looks after all student records. A member of the guidance, testing, and scholarship committees, she handles college applications of the students. Making out class ratings, personal ratings, and test ratings are part of her duties. To keep the office in order is Miss Amelia Bazemore's iob. As secretary she writes the school corre- spondence and makes the Southern Association reports and all state reports. All absentees are checked by Miss Bazemore. Daily office tasks are demonstrated by Mr. Selcer, Misses Bazemore and Scholze.

Mr. Frank H. Trotter, Commissioner of Education, is an ex-officio member and chairman of The Board of Education. He received both his B. S. and M. S. degrees from The Chattanooga College of Law. Mr. L. G. Derthiclc, superintendent of Chattanooga public schools, vvorks with The Board of Educa- tion and keeps Them informed as to The needs and The activities of the schools. During The school year of 1948, lvlr. Derthicla vvas appointed chief of education and religious affairs in Berlin, Germany, He ac- auired a year's leave of absence and vvent with his family to Germany during The second semester to carry out his new duties.
