Vice-President We CLASS 0F '49 The prospective Class ot '49 has already made some outstanding contributions to its record at Chattanooga High School. In addition to their usual task ot writing and editing the school paper, the Maroon and White, these busy Juniors have been particularly active in other phases ot school lite. They demonstrated their aptitude tor salesmanship by winwing the ticket sales for the City-Central game and being second in the Stunt Nite ticket sales. This particular Junior Class began the year with a reception tor their class president in September. Another unusual activity was their proiect of selling greeting cards for the purpose of augmenting the class treasury. Foremost in their social activities were two Junior parties, one in November tor the whole school and another tor Juniors only in lvlarch. Springtime was a busy season, tor it was then that they gave the Junior Play, Spring Green. With the help ot their sponsor, Miss Anna McCrary, they also were responsible tor giving the Junior-Senior Prom and providing girls to serve the senior luncheon. With two such successtul years behind them the Juniors promise to make their Senior year a credit both to themselves and to the school. First Row: Cox, Cooper, Adcox, Boyd, Alder, Cloud, B. They caught the spirit of City High by enthusiastically selling tickets to several football games, and by backing their class in various other ac- tivities. E ,T in The first opportunity to display their talents came in September on the Sophomore talent program. Then in November, under the direction of Mrs. Kathleen Stott and Miss Arminda Smallwood, class spon- sor, the Sophomores presented as their annual Thanksgiving program, a pageant entitled America's Worth. ln February they again proved their loyalty to the school not only by participating in Stunt Nite but also by winning the ticket sale. As the final activity of the year, they played host to the various ninth grades of the city, showing them around the building, and serving them refreshments in the home economics living room. This class holds the distinction of being the first in which Sophomores were taken into Bankers and on the staffs of the Dynamo and the Maroon and White. With one third of their high school work so successfully completed members of the Class of '50 are expected to make a brilliant record for themselves in the next two years. Every Wednesday morning the council gathers tor a busi- ness meeting at which time they discuss important school business and hear from the student activity committees who work with the faculty. This group had the able support ot Col. Creed F. Bates until his departure in March when Mr, W. P. Selcer took over the iob. This honor is bestowed upon those who are in the upper third of the senior class and who pass the careful faculty inspection on these bases: Scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Every year fifteen per cent ot the graduating class is tapped during two programs well-planned by the society's sponsor, Miss Lillian Patton. At the latter ot the two occasions, a few juniors are taken in to carry on atter the seniors leave. Those tor the year '48-'49 were Betty Ferne Brooks, Miriam Bryant, Nancy Cannon, Joyce Haman- tree, Tommy Jones, Pat Kratz, Barbara Mazerole, Clyde Nichols, Jane Northern, Vann Owens, Jarvin Parks, Dotty Smith, and Joe White. There is an annual picnic for all members ot the society at the end ot school, and at this occasion they bring their business to a conclusion by electing the otticers for the coming year. The '48 officers pictured in the hall at the left are Martin Clark, Vice-President, Jean Couch, Secretary, Mary Jo Cox, Treasurer, and Chick Thorington, President. We With a theme to decide upon, dummies to be made, pictures to be planned and taken, and layouts to be dravvn, the i948 editorial staff ot the Dynamo went to vvork. At activity and sixth periods they could be found compiling their annual. The help of the adviser, Miss Katharine Pryor, carried them over many at the rough spots, Because the book was not to come out until tall, the staff decided to include commencement pictures tor the tirst time in the history of the Dynamo. After numerous hours ot work the completed dummy was tinally sent to the publisher in Montgomery, Alabama, then after check- ing the engraver's and printer's proofs, the annual was ready! All these financiers, with the aid of their adviser, Miss Betty Bates, added to the an- nual's income by sponsoring Stunt Nite, one of the biggest events of the year.
