Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1980 volume:

1980 sitting — Roger Wilson, Francis Haberkorn, James Diller. standing — Robert Fields, Robert Hubly, Paul Augsburger, Gerry Bayston. BOARD MEMBERS We would like to thank the above board members for supporting Talefeathers this past year. Last year the Talefeathers ran into a sizeable deficit. The board members were generous enough to pay this debt so the yearbook could start off with a clean slate. We deeply appreciate this assistance. We would once again like to thank Bob Fields, Jim Diller, Bob Hubly. Roger Wilson, Paul Augsburger, Francis “Hans” Haberkorn, and Gerry Bayston for their support. These men, although not paid for their services take a keen interest in the school and its activities. They help guide and direct the school each year. We are glad they are here. This page was sponsored by Waltons Dept. Store and Dehm Bus Service. Mr. James Langan PRINCIPAL SUPERINTENDENT Congratulations to Miss Roy and Tale-feathers staff on a truly fine yearbook. It is only fitting that such an excellent book records the events of such an outstanding school year. I would be remiss if I did not thank the entire student body for individually and collectively helping to make this a banner school year. The type of student behavior evidenced throughout this past year has been a real source of pride for the entire community, school board, administration and teaching staff. Each of you should be very proud of your part in making this year one to remember for the many positive contributions of all. I would like to congratulate the yearbook staff and their sponsor for their effort in capturing some of the memories of the 1979-80 school year. I am sure these pages in future years. There have been many times when we have had anxious and exciting moments at athletic events, music contests, plays, judging contests, homecoming, prom, etc. But the main enjoyment has come from being with the student body each day of the school year. Continue with your super attitude, and I am sure success will be yours. Mr. Leeon Carrico 2 This page was sponsored by Dehm Bus Service and Citizens Bank of Chatsworth. Without her organization things would never get done at school. Another thank you goes to the two ladies at the grade school Mrs. Kietzman and Mrs. Houser. Mrs. Kietzman is the Unit Bookkeeper. She keeps track of all the money for clubs, yearbook, Tatler, etc. To help things run smoother Mrs. Houser also works at the grade school. Ladies we appreciate your hard work. Mrs. Clark left— Mrs. Hoeger, Mrs. Boruff, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Lee. COOKS We must not forget these ladies who feed us everyday. The holiday meals they prepare are like mom’s home cooking. We’re glad you are here everyday to serve us. 20 BUS DRIVERS “Slim” Billingsley These four people drive the buses for the grade school and high school. The 1979 football season was one of success. One may not think so by looking at the statistics but success is not measured by the win-loss record of a team. These young men gained success in other ways. They showed poise and sportsmanship reguardless of the outcome. They learned to accept defeat but not to be satisfied with it. Win or lose, they represented Chatsworth High School in a worthy manner. This was truly a successful season, thanks to the faculty, parents, fans, and the coaches. Without them this entire season would not be possible. Seniors’ Float 3rd Place Nameless Faces Freshmen’s 2nd Place Float FIREUP! 46 Future Pro Prospects Huh? Are You Sure That’s Our Faculty? JR.-SR. PLAYS Tammy Hornickel, Brent Feely, Tammy Bryant, Patty Franey, Sharon Kessinger, Jeff Hoelscher. The three plays performed this year were Who Murdered Who?, Fireman, Save My Child, and Cornin’ Round The Mountain. All three were a success! Who Murdered Who?, contained laughs, thrills, suspense and murder! Throughout the play excitement increases as mysterious happenings take place, lights flash on and off, and everyone is suspected of murder. Fireman, Save My Child, is an old fashioned drama with a villain, a hero, and a heroine. The villain, Archibald hypnotizes his victims into a state where they agree to do his bidding. He proposes to the heroine, Daisy, and she rejects him for the noble hero Chester. In the end you’ll find yourself cheering for the hero and heroine and hissing the villain. Cornin’ Round The Mountain, takes place in a cabin in a remote section of the Ozark Mountains. Two funny characters are Daisy Judkins and Zeke Bemis. Mr. Carrico, Mr. Corban. Mr. and Mrs. Demuth, and us started off for an all night ride to New York City. Monday after arriving at our hotel, we left to take a tour of the Lincoln Center. Once there, we saw Beverly Sills auditioning singers for the NYC Opera Company. After touring St. John's Cathedral, we headed back to the hotel to clean up for an evening on the town. Some of us ate at the famous Mama Leone’s Italian Restaurant while the others ate at Burger King. Early Tuesday morning we saw Times Square and Wall Street. Later we went to the Statue of Liberty. We then went to the United Nations Building, Radio City Music Hall and the Empire State Building. Late that afternoon we drove to Washington D.C. Late Tuesday night we settled in the Mclean Virginia Hotel. Bright and early Wednesday morning our first stop was Washington's home at Mt. Vernon. Next we went to the Supreme Court Building. From there, we caught an underground train to Rayburn Building where we ate lunch in the Representative's Cafeteria. Later we met our Representative. Tom Corcoran, on the steps of the Capitol Building. He gave us a personal tour of the building. Wednesday evening we went to the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial, Ford's Theater, and we ended the tour at the Wax Museum. Thursday we walked around the entire block of the White House. Next, we went to the John F. Kennedy Center and then to the Smithsonian Institute. That afternoon we left for Gettysburg and took a guided tour. It is now 6:00 P.M. and we are getting ready for our ride back to Chatsworth. We will probably see you around 9:00 A.M. tomorrow. See you soon. P.S. Here are a few pictures we took. Mom I'm being good! This page was sponsored by Diller Tile Company and The 7Up and Dr. Pepper Distributor. CLASS OF 1980 The Senior Class on the steps of the Capitol. This page was sponsored by Dehm Bus Service and Shafer-Pearson Agency Inc. CAPTAIN’S LOG STARDATE 2000.4 We're cruising through the galaxie Milky Way, when our space shuttle breaks down and we have to touch down on the 4th planet Earth. Our pilots Kristi Kemnetz and Lori Kietzman have informed us that we are having engine trouble and will have to land in the Chatsworth Shuttle Station. The mechanic on duty is Rob Krones and he agrees to repair the shuttle but tells us it will take awhile. To kill some time we decide to travel around town on conveyor sidewalks to main street. Bov have things changed. The big town where we used to have nothing to do, is thriving with new businesses and life. We find that the financial wizard Rich Gillette owns half of Main Street. Among some of his more popular businesses are the Opey Strong Boy Restaurant, Nautilius Health Club and Computer Dating Service. We also find that Rich isn’t the only financial genius from the class of 80. Mary Guentner is also sticking out in the business world. She has become the first woman president and principle stock holder of her own corporation which manufactures Treasure chests and Hope chests. They come in all sizes, small, medium, large, ex-large and deluxe. There are two new feature attractions in town today. One is at the Gemini Theater where the new movie American Gigolo II is opening starring the very, very, very confident Jeff Hoelscher and his New York Maid. The other attraction is right across the street at the restored Grand Building. Laura Stadler who is gaining ... popularity in the music world is playing a tuba solo in the musical “Brass has Class”. We stopped at the Plaindealer Office and talked with our old friend, David Kahle, the editor, to catch up on the latest gossip. David keeps busy with his job and his new hobby, trick photography. We had him look through the old files to find out what happened to some of the people of the class of 80. A strange metamorphosis suddenly took place. He turned into Lee Hodges. Finally his faithful secretary Carolyn Lang found the file in which we discovered several interesting sports items. Jeff “Pele” Kirkpatrick has been “smoking up” the major leagues and is currently leading the San Quinten Platemakers in stolen bases (the bases have not yet been recovered). Kristi Hubly, 1st woman in mens’ pro basketball has just scored her 10,000 career point with her new team, the Boston Celtics. Kristi however, is now ineligible for breaking training rules. She was caught playing games all night with “OLD” Coach Corban. Backgammon of course!!! We left the Plaindealer Office and while traveling along, we came across a strange odor. It was coming from Denise Rosendahl’s Stables. Denise was nowhere around and rumor has it that she was last seen floating down the Vermillion on a small blue Volkswagen. We then went on to Dick’s Supermarket where Gene Sorey has taken over Jerry’s place as assistant manager. Down the street we dropped into Ted Dunn’s Welding Shop and had a friendly “chaw” (oops, excuse me) “chat” with him. Ted told us that some of his former classmates were in the hospital. So we decided to go over and visit them. As we entered the hospital we met Head Nurse Sabrina Sanders as she came flying in. Late as usual ... We went down to the maternity ward and saw Patty Franey who just had her 9th baby. She and her husband Lenny were in the hog raising business but they have now gone into the kid raising business due to inflation. Down the hall we visited Melanie Irwin, who was suffering from a bad case of frostbite after visiting Paul who is stationed in Alaska. The saddest case we saw though, was Alan Thomsen on the “fifth floor”. Alan is suffering from a severe case of loneliness. They say that Alan has not had a date since Senior Prom. On our way back to the shuttle, we find that there has been an accident. It appears that a runner was hit by a land cruiser. The driver of the land cruiser was identified as Playboy Cris Carrico. It seems as if he had his mind more on the passenger than on the road. We return to the shuttle. That grease monkey has it fixed so we’re on our way. We have just completed an emergency stop at home planet Earth. After an uplifting visit with the Class of 80, we once again resume our five year mission to explore unknown regions of outer space. ALL THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS RECORDED ON JUNE 10, 1980. The cover of the talefeathers and the divider sheets are the Olympic Symbols — The gold circles. The color of the cover was the same color of the 1976 Talefeathers which is also an Olympic and Presidential Election year. The people who worked to design this book are: Carolyn Lang, Darryl Stiles, Dave Clark, Jill Dohman, John Kroll, Gene Sorey, Miss Roy, Melanie Irwin, Pat Lawless, and Joe Brand. We wanted to record the following information so it will become permanent with the rest of the book. NATIONAL The 1980 Winter Olympics — Lake Placid, New York, the American Hockey Team won the first gold medal ever. The 1980 Summer Olympics — Moscow, Russia, as of this date June 10, the United States of America are boycotting the Summer Olympics due to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The 1980 Presidential Election — The Primaries have ended on June 4, President Jimmy Carter has enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination. Senator Teddy Kennedy was also competing for the Dem. nomination. The Republican nomination will probably go to Governor Ronald Reagan. Competing for the Republican nomination was George Bush. It is believed that Representative John Anderson of Illinois will run as an Independent. Teheran, Iran — In November of 1979 the American Embassy in Iran was invaded by Iran Terrorist and all Americans were held hostage. This was a political rebellion against the United States of America for sheltering the Shah of Iran throughout his illness. As of this date June 10, the American hostages are at day 220 of captivity. We hope when you receive this book they are all home safely. Vicinity Spokane, Washington — Mt. St. Helen erupted. The force of the eruption generated 500 times the force of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Mt. St. Helen was the first eruption in the U.S. since the Cascades Mt. in 1914. LOCAL Chatsworth invested in a new sewer system throughout the town. Betty’s Bargain burned. Max Moore’s Barn burned. Popular Songs — It Was Almost Like A Song, and Love Stinks.
